1 or 6.

7. I think, "sweet, they didn't notice I lifted their wallet."

;)

Of course I take it as a polite comment. If someone says "Happy Holidays" to me I say "Happy Holidays" back. If they say "Merry Christmas" I say "Merry Christmas" back. I might be an atheist but I'm not some thin-skinned asshole.

In Sweden we say 'God Jul' - Good Yule - nicely pagan and nothing to do with that new-fangled 'Christianity' nonsense which will never catch on. Imo.

NAILED IT

and hey, your answer is still number 6 "other"!
I found your picture BTW :)

All I know is that any place that says "Happy Holidays" should have trigger warnings at the doors of their stores for Christians that buy into the "war on Christmas" tripe.

As long as it's a sincere good wish, I don't think anything other than "thanks, you too!"

As a Christian myself that is a good descriptor for that false narrative, tripe. The majority don't buy it, I don't think I personally know any that do IRL.

Someone said Merry Christmas to me?!

But seriously, I just see it as a polite comment. Nothing more than that.

Happy Holidays just helps include people that don't celebrate Christmas. Some Christians think there's this imaginary war going on against them, which is rather sad.

Happy Holidays / Merry Christmas what do they make you think?

they make me think that someone is making polite smalltalk, like "how's it going" or something.

In Customer Service, I can't bring myself to do either, I don't like places that force scripts on you, because I can't say it without sounding disingenuous because they're both odd phrases to my sensibility.

People actually pay very little attention as to what you say, as to how you say it so I choose things that I know sound fresh each time and happy holidays and merry Christmas will never be those things.

I selected all of them. Because frankly all of them fit. Just depends on who says it/who you're talking to.

Whether people want to admit it or not there are people out there that do it simply to be polite.
Whether people want to admit it or not there are people out there that do it to show disrespect to Christians.
Whether people want to admit it or not there are people out there that do it because of political correctness.
Whether people want to admit it or not there are people out there that do it cram their religion down others throats.
Whether people want to admit it or not there are people out there that do it to show that they're Christian.
And of course others have their own reasons that may not fit in any of the above.

Other; they're trying to be politically correct.

I agree there MIGHT be those people out there, nobody is denying that but thats not what I asked. I asked a very specific question. In the scenario in the OP I asked what you would think. So what would you actually think based on the OP?

My HS class was at least 25% Jewish. My college class-no idea but a lot of Jews and a few Asians whose faiths I had no clue about. so I generally say happy holidays to people who i don't know their background. If I know they are Christian or nominally Christian or come from a Christian family, I say Merry Christmas.

If you are saying two answers the poll is multiple choice, if you are saying one answer your answer is number #3

why should I assume you're Christian or kowtow to Christians?

My answer remains the same. What I think depends on how a person says what they say. Inflection, tone, facial expressions, hand movements, body language, they all play a part in communication and how one communicates and receives that communication. Your scenario doesn't take any of that into account.

Well your answer is your answer but my scenario says "just going by the details here" so that would mean all those things you listed would just be normal or all things being equal. Anything else would be your own induced reflection that is excluded from my scenario but thats fine its your reflection to have and your answer to give. Thanks.

Never understood why people always say "all things being equal" when referring to people. There is no such thing. It really is an impossibility. Not even twins are exactly alike.
