Now that Trump has won, one of his campaign promises was to get rid of NAFTA. Will he or wont he?

Doubtful. But I see him leaving this one up to Pence to try to rally the GOP behind it.

I see repealing Obamacare as more likely. A rollback of Dodd-Frank, too, and less power in the hands of the CFPB. Plus more federal lands freed up towards energy independence.

NAFTA was never the problem, in fact it is good. The problem is the free trade agreements that followed with nations we don't have borders with.

Did he specify say NAFTA, or was he generically speaking of free trade agreements?

My cat's name is King Tut.

He's from Arizona.

I can't imagine how he won't repeal it as it was a cornerstone of his campaign from day one. The same with building a wall and repealing Obamacare.

He said NAFTA.

OK.

I haven't followed the fight between the two losers. I do know he is against the free trade taking our jobs. I was hoping he didn't include NAFTA in that. I was hoping he thought as I do about NAFTA, that we should help our bordering country south of us. That helping build their economy is best for our current illegal immigration problems.

He has to, or he can kiss any chance of a second term goodbye. And possibly face other problems, like lower ratings than even Obama. His stance on trade deals that killed US jobs was the only reason some folks voted for him.

The problem is, NAFTA doesn't help them. Sending them jobs hasn't improved Mexico.

How long has NAFTA been around now? And has illegal immigration from Mexico gotten better, or worse?

I doubt he will push the wall. I think that was more figurative than literal. No need. Simply lift the ban on enforcement and eliminate the benefits and sanctuary places. Fine the hell out of emploters. The illegals will self deport. Obamacare must be repealed.

I wish there was an 'Other' to vote for.....I don't think it will be taken down but it could and should be modified. I also think TPP is toast as written right now.

That's because following trade deals undercut NAFTA and jobs are going to Malaysia, China, etc.

If Canada still wants to build the Keystone pipe line they now can. The election has eliminated that major roadblock. Environmentalist must be looking for a tree to hug in fear of environment regulations that Trump promised to roll back.

Actually it jobs going to Mexico. Other trade concession were given to China and other Asian nations. Not to mention the TPP. However China is not part of the deal set up with the TPP.

Even before those, though.

How many fords and Chevys sold in the US are made in Mexico?

Mexico should have a strong, thriving middle class, with the amount of manufacturing we've sent their way over the years. But they don't. Why?

Because we also sent them Americanized, corporatist capitalism. And it's hurting them (and allowed to do so by an even more corrupt government than our own) just as much as its hurting/hurt us.

OK, what I just looked up is he wants to renegotiate NAFTA. And if they don't renegotiate, then withdraw. The withdraw occurs 6 months after a written notice of intent is given.

That is what I would expect, a renegotiation, there are many aspects of NAFTA that work, and a few that do not.

The others here say he wants to get rid of it, which didn't seem right. That's why I looked it up.

I think Republicans will push back against destroying NAFTA. Let's not forget free trade has been bipartisan for decades now. The main grudge against the TPP, on the Republican side, was basically that they didn't want to give Obama something. Hopefully Trump can force the issue, but I see him failing on making a more protectionist America and really only getting his tax cuts for the wealthy, supreme court picks, deportation force, stop and frisk, and more foreign intervention.

We have a large number of free trade deals with other countries and economic blocs. NAFTA was simply the one with the greatest name recognition. Although we can all find something in those deals to hate, they've generally been responsible for a large chunk of increased free capital and the strength of the economy.

I would love it if got rid of NAFTA. But considering the fact too many republicans and even democrats suck the testicles of big business and globalist scum I don't see that happening unless he can do something through executive order.
