Bush I and "Read My Lips..."

Did Bush I lie, or was he a victim of unfortunate circumstances?

He lied....evidenced by his " read my HIPS " comment later when asked about it.

His "read my hips" statement, to me is akin to "kiss my ass".

I am sure others agree with this assessment too.

I believe he was sincere. He didn't deliver, and as a result, he lost to Clinton.

Take it as you wish - as with much related to "W", people have a totally biased view of everything he did and said. You'll never hear or see confirmation from him - that's not his style - so it would be up to President Obama and his people to disclose the truth and perhaps, once he leaves office, President Obama will be less partisan and more inclined to acknowledge something favourable about his predecessor.

I'd also note that Bush Junior was quite close to Bush Senior and it wouldn't surprise me if he emulated dad in this regard.

For what it's worth, the attached is a form of confirmation from President Bush II's press secretary - also, take it as you wish. I know what I believe, but I'm also biased in favour of President Bush and his term in office.

For the most part I see Bush II as a decent and personable guy, especially away from the office. I would believe it if he left a similar letter for his successor. My biggest fault with Bush II was that he relied way too much on Dick Cheney politically.

Do you wonder what sort of letter Obama might leave for a President Trump? :)

Thank you for your kind words re Bush 43 though. He disappointed me on so many things--immigration, energy, entitlements, spending, and more--but he got a lot of things right too and he never took personal credit for anything good that happened. He always promoted it as a team effort. I was often really angry at Bush the President, but Bush the man I respect completely. I never questioned his motives or where his heart is.

And his father was of that same caliber which is why I was furious with him when he broke his no new taxes pledge, but I did not and do not question his motives for doing so.

Bush I and "Read My Lips, No New Taxes!"

Then he raised taxes.

Did Bush I lie, or was he a victim of unfortunate circumstances?

Note: "Lie" implies intent to deceive.

I do not think he lied. I think he drank the Reagan Kool-Aid and thought there would be no fall out from the Reagan tax cuts.

I have the utmost respect for the Bush's young and old, but this tradition apparently started with a short note from Reagan to his VP GHW Bush when he was taking over and Bush Senior, Clinton, and Bush Junior have carried that forward. One assumes that President Obama will somehow put away his hyper-partisanship and do the same, even if Donald Trump is elected, but I'm not prepared to bet on it since President Obama has done many classless things while President.

Obama has been a dignified, class act throughout his terms. He treats the office of the Presidency with the respect and dignity it demands. For one thing, he's never called anyone a name (Pig, Miss Housekeeping, fat slob, criminal, crooked, etc.). For another, he's never bragged about molesting people. For another, he never actually did molest anyone. For another, he's never claimed to be "the best!" or "everyone says I'm the best!" or "the smartest," or "the one who will make the most jobs of anyone else..there will be so many jobs that people will say stop stop we have so many jobs!" and other egomaniac statements.

He has a great sense of humor and tells jokes pretty well. He treats everyone respectfully, although he will jab them at the White House Conference, where the tradition is for the sitting President to tell jokes. Michelle Obama is a class act, as well. Their daughters have behaved almost perfectly since moving into the White House (remember that the Bush girls had gotten drunk, one stuck her tongue out at the press, and other childish things...imagine what the public would've said if Obama's daughters had done such things).

He has also shown his temperament to be spot on for one in a position of high power. Cool, thoughtful, intelligent, seeking counsel and taking advice, decisive, calm, thick skinned (which all Presidents must be).

Watch the State of the Union address where, for the first time in the history of the nation, one of the supposedly dignified members of Congress yells out at him "YOU LIE!" Watch Obama's reaction. Then think about how Trump would have reacted.

Jesus, weren't those the days. When a candidate could say definitively what his position was, and when he wasn't able to stand by it it destroyed his career and made him a laughingstock.

If only he'd waited to make that comment today. He could have lied about everything just for the fun of it and he would have been fine.
I am waiting for either candidate to explain their platform and how they intend to accomplish those goals, so far we have gotten lot of BS and Rhetoric and very little substance. Being that the election is right around the corner it does not look we will be getting anything from either candidate. I used to think American politics were bad back in the day but I was wrong and this election is all the proof one needs to know that the system no longer works, if these two are the best the Parties can come up with then it may be time for those Parties to go before the Nation crashes for good.

I read your first sentence, and after getting my gag reflexes under control decided not to read any more of your nonsense. President Obama has in many ways disgraced the office of the US Presidency and his hyper partisanship may play a role in lesser positions, but not in the White House - he's a child in that regard and even after eight years still hasn't learned.

Your delusions are breathtaking.

Well, it's not subjective. It's objective. Obama has acted in a dignified way, with the decorum demanded of the highest office in the land.

Can you name an instance where he called someone a pig? Where he bragged about molesting someone? One instance where he called someone a fat slob? When he called someone a loser? Of course not.

This is what gives the Trumpettes no credibility and marks them as the uneducated old white guys they are....they refuse to see things objectively. Regardless how one feels about Obama's policies or about black people, it's a matter of record that he has acted with the dignity demanded of hte office. His temperament is one of calmness and coolness. That's not an opinion. That's an objective observation.

Even with Trump's outrageous statements, esp of there being a "rigged election," Obama spoke out against it. Not by calling Trump a name. He's too classy for that. (That's what Trump does.) No...instead of calling Trump "a loser," he pointed out that Trump is losing. A statement of fact. Not name calling.

A totally class act. As was Reagan. As was Bush Sr. Bush Jr to a lesser degree, but still, totally upright and respectful to others while President. None of those class acts lowered themselves to name calling or encouraging hatred of anyone. These are observations of objective things. Not opinions.

Stop the idiocy now. Don't expect me to defend Donald Trump - I never have and I never will - and Trump is not the subject of this thread, much as you want him to be.

Donald Trump isn't President and never has been, so using Donald Trump as your compass for Obama's Presidency is lunacy even for a liberal.

President Obama has served during a time when American race relations has deteriorated greatly, and much of it lays at his doorstep with his foolish need to insinuate himself into issues where race is a factor long before he has the facts and as a result he's looked not only stupid but dangerously bigoted.

He's governed at a time of heightened partisanship, but so did GW Bush, and he was able to work with Congress and get things done, but not the arrogant, self-important, self-righteous asshole currently in the Oval Office.

Obama brags about a "big pen" as the Supreme Court, even a court lacking Scalia, tells him repeatedly he lacks the power and strikes his executive orders down.

President Obama dangerously abandoned issues in the Middle East and it is now embroiled in the worst turmoil it has seen in my lifetime, if not longer.

And President Obama has sat by and watched Vladimir Putin take over the world stage and insert Russia as the lead world power in Europe, in the Middle East, and in much of Asia as Obama twiddles his thumbs, plays golf, goes on late night TV and sings at press luncheons.

President Obama has damaged America greatly and for you to sit there and compare him to Donald Trump is just asinine.

He did lie and most likely hoped that he wouldn't be eviscerated in the media for not keeping his promise. If he was sincere in keeping his promise then he would not have traded tax increases for what ever was promised in return.
