In today's politics, many ideas are split between and even within all the political parties. Often we find ourselves agreeing on one platform but some topics break our mold. Do debates influence your vote?

there is a realistic solution. let a computer draw the districts using census population density data only. districts would be redrawn every ten years.

That would be taking power away from the states. I am against.

i don't understand how anyone could be against this proposal.

Yeah...pretty difficult to understand.
Especially when that anyone has stated...."There is no realistic way to make reapportionment completely non-partisan. If there was, I would be all for it".

I have a friend who is a passionate Trump defender, while at the same time being a strong Trump critic. One of the most bizarre things to witness is his Facebook page. I learned 8 years ago not to participate in political discussion with anyone with with strong political passions if you do not already see eye to eye if and want to remain friends, so I'm asking it here. Do you think the debates will change who you will support on Election Day?

I kind of see it as being similar to a college football game. Chances are you'll either do some chest beating and say:

- "Yes, we won!"
- Be angry with your team for losing
- Be angry with the officials (in this case the moderators) for unfair officiating

In any event, I can't image an LSU fan deciding to switch their loyalties to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Am I right?

Sorry, it seems I took too long getting one of the poll questions under the maximum allowed words and now it won't let me post a poll.
Generally, no. In theory they could, and should, but the formats they use preclude any legitimacy, IMO.

For the most part, I feel that a person's record is far more indicative of what they'll do rather than what they say they'll do when handing out promises because they're begging for my vote. To a slightly lesser degree, I see the way debates have evolved to be not much better then half-truths and lies-by-omission. In both ways they're telling me what they think I want to hear.

Many people say, "Let a computer do it."

Who programs the computer?

who usually programs computers? software writers.

Except that even the computer requires human input. The politicians can still effect how the census is taken.

Like I said, it would take power from the states.

it would take power away from politicians who want to draw their own districts, which should absolutely happen.

Like it or not, gerrymandering is legal and it empowers the states to do the redistrictng based on which party controls the legislature. The democrats held and used that advantage for seven decades. The complaints by anyone on the left only started after the 2010 state elections gave the republicans the gerrymandering advantage.

i've always thought that gerrymandering was ****, even when i leaned right. it's conflict of interest.

No, it doesn't influence me and I am pretty sure they don't influence many outside of a very few. Most who tune in to the debates are their to root for their chosen candidate, their minds already made up. Looking at RCP, Clinton had a three point lead prior to the three debates and a five point lead after the debates were over. Trump didn't rise or fall, remaining the same while Clinton rose three points. But how much of the Clinton rise of three points was due to the debates or to the sex tape? I think the sex tape had much more to do with it than the debates.

By the way, I was busy watching the baseball playoffs and didn't watch any of the debates. My mind was made up way back at the beginning of the year whom I would vote for or in this case against. Most independents don't both to pay any attention to the election until two or three weeks out. By the time they start to tune in, the debates are over.
