Paul Ryan is a main contender. I think that is a respectable choice. I have my qualms with the man, but I ultimately think he can be negotiated with. I would prefer Rubio over Ryan, and Kasich over Rubio.

I think Portman might decide to make a run at it. David Broder picked Portman as the best choice for the GOP if Obama won in 2012. However, Portman deferred to the governor of our state (Kasich) Now with Kasich out of the way and Portman apparently heading to an easy win in a contest the Democrats thought they could win (until about 2 months ago) he will have had 10 years in the senate, He's respected on both sides and he's not adopted the silly bible thumping social conservatism that has hurt the GOP with well educated social agnostics. He's much smarter than anyone who ran this time around as well

I haven't had the opportunity to study Portman much, but so far what I have found isn't striking a nerve. He has had positions which are heterodox, but not in a mean spirited way. What really impressed me lately with your state's politicians is Kasich's willingness to look at welfare and vocational training programs from a "bang for buck" perspective by turning the mirror on the bureaucracy itself. Neither Democrats nor Republicans tend to look at these public policies that way, unfortunately. It's always about whether or not to give the welfare recipient more or less money, but not whether or not the retraining programs are doing the individual justice or serve the national interest. Given Portman is more focused on national politics, has he had much time or interest on talking about Kasich's most recent national critique of the welfare state?

don't know the answer to that

Jerry Springer and Jimmy Swaggart, in any order.
Don't give up on a concept just because the trial run didn't work as planned.

At any rate, Portman seems like a reasonable choice thus far.

when a well respected and astute moderate like the late David Broder suggests Portman is the best choice, that says something

Broder. You're giving me more folks to read, Turtle.

I'm tired of brinkmanship politics, but I'll take it for another 4 years if we can get mature policy debates and resolutions afterward.

I would assume if Clinton wins, Rubio will be the nominee.

I would be fairly pleased, as he was one of the few that offered very specific and very reformist policy proposals (Bush being the most substantive of the whole lot). However, I wonder if people won't forgive him for coming off as unpolished and rash with decisions (I.e. Giving up his senate seat to run for POTUS, then jumping back in later), despite the eventual nominee's total lack of polish.

Don't call Kasich out so soon though. He has been keeping up with the fundraising and never really stopped unofficially campaigning. I follow him regularly and he is always out and about doing stuff that can be considered campaign worthy stuff for 2020. I wonder how that dynamic will play out with the both of them in the primaries. One would have to drop out. I'm not sure how close they are personally, but they could pair up and pick themselves as President and Vice President respectively, but I don't know how well two white guys from Ohio will play out with the rest of the country.

Most of us who supported him here in Ohio, from what I hear, believe he had his shot, he failed, and its time for Portman to get the shot if the LB is elected this time round

If Trump is defeated, and it seems likely that he will, who do you think the GOP will put up to challenge Clinton in 2020? My fear is that the wrong lesson will be taken and someone like Cruz will propel themselves on a tide of 'We weren't sincerely conservative enough, let's take back our country!"

Thoughts?

Edit: The poll was going to be broad, asking if you thought it would be a Social Conservative, a Moderate, a Liberal, a Tea Party-ite, a Trump-ite, a Wildcard, an Establishment candidate, etc. Again, my apologies on the poll mistake.

Kanye West.

Portman has an abysmal voting record. You are falling into the trap of supporting another tepid "conservative". Might as well bring another Bush online. This is the kind of thinking that got us Trump.

If Portman was the nominee right now he'd be 20 points up. You're probably mad that he doesn't hate gays

Every election cycle I think the republicans cannot find a worse candidate and they always do. they bypass the handful os sane solid republicans and always go for a tv actor or someone who does not comprehend science.

there only chance of beating Hillary was Kasich and he was too sane.

The Republicans love tv actors or hillbillies.

Maybe Palin or that dude with a beard from the Duck tv show/

I would say high single digits. With how polarized everyone is, I doubt anyone, including Christ himself, could pull off double digit leads across the country.

this entire mess is merging into a perfect storm for Portman I believe

If he doesn't hate the gays that's a + in my book (obviously).

His son Will is gay. I knew that a while back when I asked a classmate of Portman's son why Will wasn't going to his father and grandfather's alma mater (Dartmouth) even though he had the numbers to get in an this other boy (who I used to coach in a couple sports) said

"Will finds the social environment at Yale much more friendly than Dartmouth)

so it was known among his classmates he was gay a couple years before it was made public

Yale is widely held to be the most gay friendly of the ivies. maybe you should apply.

Scott Walker, Paul Ryan, or Rubio. Definitely an establishment guy.

How does Romney or McCain fit those comments.

I see Portman as the best choice if Hildabeast wins. This year Portman didn't want to go against his own governor and he would have had to run for both President and senator. In 2020 he will be four years into his senate seat giving him a safe harbor. and other than the FDR era, holding the white house for more than 12 years is a historic improbability

My great fear is that the GOP nominates someone like Ted Cruz and we have to wait until 2024 to field a credible candidate.

They nominated trump this time around... I'm done trying to figure out their logic.
