The Republicans were once radical abolitionists and reformers that broke the old order and did some damn good.

Hopefully they go back to the older days in some ways, dropping the racism and lame reactionary routine -- a center-right GOP with actual statesmen would be nice. A Democratic party with actual statesmen would be nice too. Since the 70s, congress has been pretty.....meh.

Both sides need to drop the neoliberal routine though.

Anyway, I think they will reform after a few internal battles.

They're pretty much a train-wreck now and most of their biggest names are an embarrassment to the republic. They've been termed a radical insurgency by some, not too crazy of a label with their antics for the last several years.

I like to think America is swinging back left.......

So why is the country getting more and more progressive?

It isn't. What we're seeing is mostly the result of changing technology. Unlike 30 or more years ago a single person or a small group can get their message to a wide swath of people with very little cost or time investment. This can give a small minority the appearance of a large movement.

I wonder what the people dependent upon sucking the public teat will do when it dries up? and what will the pimps in office do when they can no longer buy the votes of the dependent parasites because the pimps no longer have enough producers to loot

Guess what, POLLS have shown that the country is getting unmistakably more progressive.

And guess what, social media has given a voice to the oppressed, and it is here to stay, no matter how much the right wing mainstream media would like to shut it down.

Calling fellow human beings parasites, huh? Hitler would have loved to have you as a follower.

THe conservatism of "age" is actually the conservatism of race, because the older generations are whiter than the younger ones, and therefore more conservative.

Wow, it must be great to live in that world you've invented. So how does that work? Do all the older people turn white? Do non-white people never age? How exactly does the older generation stay white?

I ask from a position of grave concern. As a Hispanic man in his golden years, am I a freak of nature in your world, or should I expect to turn white any day now?

Social media has become an echo chamber for those who like to hear themselves talk. That's on both sides of the political aisle. It allows those who don't wish to have their ideas challenged shut out those who disagree with them. It has allowed the filtering of feedback necessary to really plumb the depths of various ideologies and theories. The result is that lots of people now have an incredibly narrow perspective of how societies work and an incredibly over inflated view of how their particular vision would stand up if actually implemented.

It sounds like you have a lot of internalized white privilege and racism inside of you

Except for bringing public attention to the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, etc.

Except for a blatantly racist organization whining online?

Except for helping remove a racist University of Missouri Chancellor from office

Because the special little snowflakes can't deal with the real world.

Except for organizing marches to protest the fascist ideals of Donald Trump

Oh look, liberal violence, that's what we need.

Except for the fact that we will be out in force during the 2016 elections, killing any change the GOP has of winning the presidency or the senate

Good luck on that. We'll see what you manage to accomplish. I mean, the whole Bernie Sanders thing was a complete clusterf*ck and all.

Except for the fact that we are going to be the voters and leaders of the future, as old white conservatives die out.

Yeah, once you grow up. Give it a shot.

There have been several studies who prove that the GOP's main voting demographic of older whites are dying out.

R.I.P., GOP: Party of old, disillusioned white people is dying a slow death - Salon.com

The GOP Is Dying Off. Literally. - POLITICO Magazine

The younger generations of this country are more diverse, more progressive, more educated, less likely to vote gop, less likely to own firearms, less likely to live on a farm in the middle of nowhere watching Fox news, but more likely to live in an urbane, cosmopolitan, educated city.

My question is, how will the older, more conservative, gop voting population of this country react to the fact that they are a dying breed? The best case scenario is that they accept that their ideology is fading fast, and accept that the country is moving forward without them.

However, conservatives are known to be sore losers. Look at the 2000 election, where Al Gore won both the popular and electoral votes, but Bush refused to accept this result, and went to the (conservative dominated) supreme court, which illegally declared him the winner. However, with the conservatives losing political power, and the supreme court about to have its first progressive majority in 40 years, political cheating may not bring conservatives the results they desire.

I am afraid that some red states will double down on gerrymandering. it is a real possibility, as the gop realizes their hopeless situation, that they will try to reinstate Jim Crow voting laws, or try sneakier ways of disenfranchising voters such as raising the age limit, requiring voter id, or concentrating polling stations in right wing dominated neighborhoods.

You also have to remember that the right wing owns the majority of this country's guns. I fear that as the right wing becomes more and more of a minority, that they will turn to violence. Even though they will not win this civil war: the Army has tanks, drones, and thermonuclear weapons, the carnage will be unpleasant to say the least. I most certainly wouldn't put the right wing past terrorism towards innocent civilians: Dylan Roof is a perfect example. In fact, the vast majority of terrorism in the usa is right wing. Right-Wing Extremists Are a Bigger Threat to America Than ISIS

The bottom line is the bigoted conservative old white men are dying out, and being replaced with erudite, intelligent, cosmopolitan voters who are progressive and tolerant. I am simply afraid of the turmoil the country will go through in getting rid of the last remnants of the hateful white privileged reactionaries who have ruled for far too long.

Yup, the GOP is dying out, disappearing altogether....Lol !!

Sounds like you don't have answers to my questions and are reverting to childish name calling. Sigh, I guess it was expected.

One more thing... Do all Hispanics have white privilege, or am I in a special group? Is there a handbook on how to use it? I heard it is pretty useful. So if I have it, I should start using it.

I'm not a Republican but I would guess they'd laugh at that just as Democrats would laugh at people saying they're doomed. The funniest part is the having ruled for far too long since we've been ruled by leftists for decades.

And as the younger generation ages, they become more conservative.

Are there any documented studies behind this (not just news articles)? I'd be interested to see..

Lots of people are living off of others. Your philosophy is much closer to the Nazis than mine

Oh, I've accepted I'll grow up. I'm more afraid I'll become a miserable git like you.

It was an honest question, your statement seems like common sense but I'm interested to see if there is empirical information. I thought you of all people would understand that.

The GOP isn't going anywhere. It will evolve, change and redirect. But it will remain around as long as the nation does. But cheer up, the US won't be around for much longer anyway. I might not be here to see it crack up, but my grandchildren will.

I hope it's not too bloody.

The Left is far too confident.
The latest polls have the swing states nearly even.

While Dems go on and on about Republican disasters, the reality is that Trump might pull this off.
If he does, he will have both the House and Senate for sure. Then he will create the SCOTUS that rules us for decades to come.

This situation is very dire for America and Dems act as though it is all but won.
I'm really worried.

Hillary is the favorite and rightly so. Most indicators point to her being the new president.

Unfortunately, Trump was the underdog in the primaries too. Nobody thought he had a rats chance, but he pulled it off. That's what worries me. Of course, he did benefit from a split field in that race.

Conservatives will react by buying the media and attempting to infiltrate the education system with god fearing, strict constitutionalists and their rigid dogma. This will have the effect of further distancing the population from rational thought and science. Oh wait....It's already been happening.

Hillary is not the favorite by much, if anything.
The swing states are polling as a tie in the most recent polls. They are all that really matters.

You don't seem to think its a problem for a party to encourage dependency in order to guy votes.

Strawman....If most of those people on the public dole would actually vote they would blow away Democrat opposition every time..Fact of the matter is your side depends on low voter turnout.

God forbid people need help.

It is not the fact that people need help. It is the 3rd and 4th generation welfare recipient that is the problem. Our help has become a way of life. They have become parasites.
