Both Johnson and Weld are moderate libertarians and governed in NM and MA as libertarian Republicans. Neither was a radical, and both accomplished a lot. It is a little surprising that the radical Libertarian (capital L) Party seems to be embracing them, but - great!

Both men support restricting the 2nd Amendment and Johnson supports restricting the 1st. I think both are problematic for the Libertarian Party. The piece where Johnson agreed that the government had the right to violate your freedom of association by forcing you to violate your faith was surprising to me.

Libertarians are too Ayn Rand for my taste.

I would rather say they are not Friedrich Hayek enough :)

<shrug> As I said, moderate libertarians: mostly, 9 times out of 10....Good enough for government work :)

Gary Johnson =/= Libertarian, any more than "Donald Trump" = "GOP".

Both Sanders and Trump want to vastly increase the size and scope of the federal government, to include its ability to control and steer our lives. That's not exactly whatcha call "Libertarian".

I love this argument I get from libertarians. You can't critize their politicians because they aren't libertarian... Well sorry to burst your bubble but Johnson is RUNNING AS a libertarian! Trump is running as a Republican. I may not like that they are and don't mean much of what the party platform stands for but please lets lay off the philosophical discussions and focus on the people who are actually in the race

Sure. But the party and the underlying philosophy are not the same. Trump doesn't define conservatism simply because he is running at the head of the party associated with that belief system.

 we'll see if Johnson wins the nomination.

As per parties, it is an organization composed of the same group of people who hold the same ideals. Libertarians or others who don't necessarily like whatever party label should adequately give them a voice have yet to give a coherent answer on what to do about it.

Therefore this election principles have gone out the window and people are voting against what they perceive as the status quo. These voters don't like the people in the party and no one will really truly be able to satisfy them but trump and sanders are as close as they are going to get

I know people who want to see the Libertarian party become as mainstream as the Republicans and Democrats but always felt the stakes were too high to "throw away" their vote on an unelectable candidate. At the same time, part of the reason a third party isn't emerging is because none have proven to be significantly popular enough to gain traction and interest. With the unfavorable numbers in both the likely Republican and and Democrat nominees so high, is this the year we should start making the American people consider a third option?

I think libertarians should vote Libertarian.

Re: Want to vote Libertarian be always felt you were wasting your vote. Is this the y

I like the idea that anyone of any party can win if he is the most qualified and shares a common vision/values with the majority of voters regardless of party affiliation. IMHO the main benefit of the political parties is to keep America from becoming a house divided along geographical or ethnic lines in a spices where many is not most naturally gravitates into tribal alliances.

Plus with the 2-party system is most of the time, the winner of the White House has a majority of voters behind him, at least on election day. If the Libertarians gain in popularity, something I'm not opposed to all things being equal, we can count on every president winning the White House with the majority of voters voting against him. To remedy this, IMHO we should also modify the way we elect the President and require a direct vote of 50% +1 and a runoff if needed; preferably an instant runoff as to not run up campaign spending any more than it is already and not lose voter turnout in a runoff.

It's never the right time to vote right-libertarian, it's never the time in general.

I trust the American people will never be that dumb and that cruel.

yeah telling people to stop living like children is cruel
