Should we lower standards for potential female firefighters?

Should we lower standards for female firefighters?

now I know for certain why you use the word moron so frequently

It is the only thing that keeps me sane when dealing with certain special posters... I would term them ****ing morons but the **** is not shown.

Should hopeful firefighters who happen to be female have lower physical standards than male applicants?

Lowering standards for women is completely antithetical to the principles of feminism, which I actually stand by in spite of its very much maligned reputation.

A question that I think would cut through the fog of this could be, "Should hopeful firefighters who happen to be physically weaker have lower physical standards than stronger applicants? To which I'm sure most people would say, "Well of course not. Duh."

no-unless female FFs are restricted to fighting only "female level fires"

No, standards should not be lowered. Of course, this means that quite a few females who wish to be firefighters will not be physically able to make the cut; however, there are women out there who can hoist a 200 lb man over her shoulder and run with him. There aren't a lot of women that can compete physically with men, but those who can pass exactly the same tests and standards as their male counterparts should definitely be given the same job.

Shouldn't women have to fight fires started by women though?

only if you believe in group guilt

I don't like to see women coaching men's sports... men should fight fires made by men and women given the chance to prove they are capable by fighting fires by women. Of course those fires are daintier than male fires so they will be easier to fight... but it is a start.

what's a "men's sports"? are you talking about male athletes? I had several great squash coaches but maybe the best one I had was when I took a year off to rebuild my game in college and I turned to the women's coach (who happened to be female) because she was far more qualified than the men's coach whose main theory on coaching was just to convince the admissions office to let in more top HS talent. DO you know who is working as a coach for world #2 tennis player Andy Murray? Former Lady star Amelie Mauresmo. Since Andy's mother is a top tennis coach, I guess he doesn't worry about getting some advice from a woman who probably couldn't have ever taken a game off of him since he was 16 years old.

Men's sports like the NBA, NFL, Etc.

That is why he is #2.

before that coaching move he was about #4. I suspect you know almost nothing about tennis or professional level sports though.

Sure... I know almost nothing. My doubles partner and I won our Southern California age group competition twice in tennis and follow most professional sports daily... not to mention I played most at a competitive level but you go ahead with your shooting and table tennis high lights...

If you follow most pro sports yet think Murray is only No. 2 because he has a woman as one of his coaches, then all that proves is that following is not understanding.

age group in tennis-not bad, but that doesn't sound like pro level or say-a finalist for two olympic teams or a collegiate national title. BTW I wasn't a bad tennis player until a herniated two discs and my 120 MPH serve sort of went the way of the DODO bird. Your silly comment about Murray suggests you were either not being serious or you were being sexist so I will leave it at that.

OMG are you two ****ing serious? He is #2 because he has a woman coach and you believe that ****?

Yeah... not being serious.

different states have different requirements and they are all considered firefighters

that's just the way it is now for over 15 years, it is no longer considered a manual labour job it is a profession so yes they have to meet requirements (still) it's just that the requirements have changed

So you propose you slough off certain aspects of a job on a smaller pool of individuals?

If lowering them for men would make an environment that is no longer safe(lower than the requirements) then women should not have them lowered either. If you want to be treated equal, you need to be able to abide by the same standards that men do. This isn't an office job where physical requirements are not needed. Physical strength, and quickness are vital parts of being a firefighter. This is a no brainer.

no vote .. I suspect that originally the ''standards'' were set to exclude the woman ..due to ignorance and fear .. The target must be to achieve success , to "get the job done" ..Simply to not only extinguish blazed, but to prevent them in the first place ... here, the surface has yet to be scratched .
Hell, maybe the standards should be raised instead . by intelligent beings ..
