One of the biggest bigots I have encountered on this board is Muslim One of the least bigoted likewise.

I encounter bigoted Christians who use their religion to hurt. I encounter Christians who are extremely nice and who don't strike me as bigots at all.

Religion doesn't make a bigot, but bigots sure can use religion as their weapon of choice.

Bigots? No not for the most part. They can easily seem like bigots but when based on a faith which they think comes from supreme power. They are following their idea of faith.

Well actually, a decent person would find a way for the child to get the food they need without having to steal. Only a douchebag would stare at the kid and let him keep stealing without getting off their backside to do something to better the situation. I wouldn't want the child to be hungry but neither would I accept that stealing is a good way to put food in their belly.

That is why I added the line about repentance and redemption. Tolerance does not mean acceptance. It means being patient while promoting the good

a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.

My experiences tell me yes, all people who strictly try to follow ancient religions are bigots. I'm curious of other peoples opinions on this.

You realize that this post is pure irony, and what you've said is bigoted against religious folks, right?

How many people are unwilling to tolerate the beliefs of the religious? Is that not bigoted? Seems like many secularists want to impose their beliefs, whether by law or by social pressure, upon the religious that they will not tolerate.

Everyone's a bigot. I am bigoted against child molesters. So yes they are and so is everyone else.

This question is pointless.

Self reflection and projection are hardly useless.

Arent people that consistently **** themselves over 'people of faith' bigots?

Not if I'd have worded my post correctly. I was trying to question people who believe their religious texts are literally true, and are to be followed as law, word for word. For example men who don't allow women rights because their faith forbids it.

Very often. But, if they have any common sense they know science is fallible, and thus at some point know they can be wrong. Religions are supposed to be infallible, which is actually where most intolerance stems from.

Well, I think we've established that "bigot" is a pretty empty word. Pretty much everyone and noone is a bigot. Some bigotry, such as bigotry against pedophiles, is even justified, we've established.

I think we can possibly establish unnecessary intolerance from necessary intolerance. If an action is of no immediate physical harm it should have tolerance. Do you agree?
And to summarize, some bigotry is needed. Some bigotry is not.

Nah. I dont buy it. Most bigotry comes from plain old 'people'. As for the word 'intolerance'...thats just a bull**** meme.

I'm only intolerant of people who wish to harm other people./QUOTE]

Your bigotry is worse, because it involves denying personhood from human beings so that when you say you're intolerant of harm to "other people," you're specifically excluding harm to those humans you have bigotry against.

To tolerate the intolerable is to permit the death of society.

To tolerate the intolerable would be an impossibility, by definition. Therefore, the only way you could accomplish such a feat would be some kind of rip in the fabric of space time....or a relativity vortex of sorts. Which is no bother, but you'll need to get a permit for that.

Does this indicate an about face for you when it comes to defending the very least tolerant among you?

Had you worded your question as "Are people of religious faith who try to be in the public limelight typically bigots?" Then I would have said yes. As a religious person, I find myself much offended by those who claim the same religion as I but are intolerant bastards. However, experience has shown me that they are a visible minority.

I agree very much with this. And it doesn't help that one side wants to shove them into the limelight because they are so damn awful that they are a political gold mine.

Remember Tebow? Remember how his faith was criticized? Maybe not as bad as possible, but he was a great role model in a sport filled with bad ones. Remember this past super bowl? All the commercials? Peyton was asked not to talk about his faith. So we see good role models who are Christian in an arena that DESPERATELY needs good role models..."shunned" for one thing that played a huge role in making them a positive role model.

There is no doubt that faith can be used incorrectly. And that gets the press. But how often is it mentioned that faith is used to justify great works and positive attitudes? Not often. Hell. I love Jimmy Carter. Not as a president, but as a man. He was a raging liberal AND a strong Christian. I wonder if he would be shunned by his party now?
