With Senator Lindsey Graham running for the Presidency and being a Bachelor, (not that he has any chance at winning such) this does bring up the question about the need for a First Lady. Who would be the First Lady if the President was a Bachelor. What say ye. Do we need a First Lady?

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a presidential hopeful, is a bachelor. Would he need a first lady? It's a question complicated by shifting views of what a first lady should be.

To some, the role is more than just ceremonial. To others, choosing china sets and guest lists is a relic of a bygone age.

Only two presidents were unmarried when taking the oath of office: James Buchanan (D) and Grover Cleveland (D). Of the two, only Buchanan remained single through his presidency. But even he had a woman in his life willing to step in and play the role of White House hostess. Buchanan’s niece, Harriet Lane, became a well-known Washington socialite who, as the White House website highlights, “filled the White House with gaiety and flowers, and guided its social life with enthusiasm and discretion, winning national popularity.”....snip~

Lindsey Graham interview raises question: Do we need a first lady?

No. More relevant now, though, is the possibility of Bill Clinton as the "First Gentleman." WTF would he do in THAT role?

Need? No.

A nice to have? Certainly.

Heya Ockham. :2wave: Graham has a Sister. She can play Hostess with the Mostess.

Do we need this poll?

Naw. We need a First Humbolt. I'll take care of the social events and calendar. Shooting clays on the WH lawn. The WH woodshop. The First Truck. Hot pepper eating contests. Bobbing for crocodiles. Annual congressional tomato fight. I'll put some zing into it.

Will those be Jalapenos from the WH Garden? That could be a problem. Will there be a Humbolt Microbrew as well?

Habaneros, at the very least. Moonshine - I'm living in Franklin Country, the Moonshine Capital of the World. Yard darts for Putin visits. Lotsa leg-humping labs running around the more sophisticated events.

Is that where the Bondurants were from?

James Buchanan (D) ... but even he had a woman in his life willing to step in and play the role of White House hostess.
In addition to Buchanan arguably being the worst president we've had, it's very likely that Buchanan was gay.

His lover was pinned to be William R. King, who was a Senator from Alabama and Pierce's VP for six weeks until King's death.

What if a future President is an Orphan and not married? Will he need one?
It's not a requirement of the job. I'm not sure if today's America would ever elect a bachelor, but having a spouse is not a requirement.

Same thing he did as President? Only he would have a lot more free time since he wouldn't have to BE President at the same time.

I don't think it's a need at all.

I do think it's interesting that no ones making a fuss over the matter that the first gay presidential candidate to run and has a chance of winning is a republican.

 That made me chuckle. I love that movie about the Bondurants.

It's a scenic, rural county. If you don't have to be someplace in a hurry, it's a good place to live, like much of SW Virginia.

Now, now. Lindsey is a spinster-man. Big difference. I don't know exactly what that difference is, but it's big.

It better be a woman with a hot girlfriend. That's all I know.
