Paleocon posted a pretty good thread on this, unfortunately some immature types trolled the thread and it ended up in the basement. I'd like to resurrect this one on his behalf in hopes that we can have a mature and thoughtful discussion:

"In practically all the great civilizations of the past, it was simply accepted that a wife must obey her husband. Plato and Aristotle wrote on this, and explained how, since the husband is by nature the head of the household, and the wife has freely agreed to marriage, that he has authority over her in matters concerning the marriage. St. Thomas Aquinas also discussed this. Moreover, the Christian faith has made this most clear, that a husband has authority over his wife."

I'd pay big money to see you ask that question in front of my wife.

I always liked the Chronicles. They are especially insightful, where Gandalf explains the Ps and Qs to Ms Granger.

Does a wife have a "duty" towards her husband? Absolutely. He also has certain "duties" towards her. That is the nature of marriage.

Is a wive's duty sometimes to "obey?" Also yes. However, as before, that goes both ways to a certain extent. It also does not necessarily include demands which are in any sense unreasonable.

As I said in Paleocon's thread, I do believe that men can, often do, and even should take something of a "leadership" role in their marriages. That being said, however, there is a difference between "leadership" and "tyranny." Men who cross that line can, often do, and even should suffer for it.

It also should be noted that just because a man takes "leadership" in certain areas of a relationship, that does not mean that his spouse cannot take leadership in others. This should ultimately be a dynamic which develops more or less organically, without the need to "force" much of anything.

"History has a long list of dudes who say that women should obey dudes. No discernible bias in sampling was detected."
