Celebrate and enjoy the freedom that so many have died for.

Because I choose to answer this thread completely. Save your tears for someone else.

The OP absolutely admitted it was part of his motivation to start THIS thread. FYI.
If you're referring to the Obama/ice cream complaint that was only one of many. Don't read too much into that.

I tend to believe that most of those who have fallen would also be enjoying themselves on Memorial Day if they were here to do so.

Not the place for it.

My day off, my choice.

Your post is petty and your post about being upset at the black man in the White House for eating an ice cream cone is petty.

:lamo

Is it your belief that continuing to try to make this a personal attack will somehow take the light from the stupid post made by the rep from the dem party or the folly of defending it?

Memorial Day is to honor our fallen soldiers. And we should do that, absolutely. But, is it acceptable to BBQ on Memorial Day, or should we spend the day in deep thought and solemn remembrance?

I BBQ everyday I can. "Man, I hope people back in the World are not out barbecuing today on Memorial Day", said no GI in a faraway land ever.

But you know what the VA is still running like a three legged dog. Veteran's often cannot get adequate mental health care. Veteran's often still find it difficult getting jobs paying living wages once they rejoin civilian life.

In my opinion most veterans would prefer to give up discounts at Bubba's Squat & Gobble and other fine establishments; they would prefer to give up the now almost national feel good patriotic moment requirement to honor a military person before every sporting or public event and they wouldn't give a rat's ass about barbecuing on any day IF America would actively force the government to honor the commitment it made to veterans when vets raised their right hands and to stop the habit of throwing them into harm's way when it isn't completely necessary.

I don't either, but some people (here at DP and elsewhere) are acting like it is. Hence, the question.

You are allowed to grill food, however you should otherwise be sitting in ashes and practicing self-flagellation. Ice cream is definitely out of the question.

Or the folly of attacking Obama for enjoying an ice cream cone?

Gazing upon an open flame or coals can be a calming and mesmerizing experience.

Do both at the same time.

Our VFW had a BBQ with pulled pork and tenderloins--does that count? :)

After a bouquet tossed in the river for those lost at Sea, we had a great service in our park's War Memorials with many words still with me.

It's always good to teach the kids about the ## names on the World War stone--since it was engraved before WW2--and the ## names from WW2.

Kids were asking about the ## from Vietnam because their ranks are given with their branch of service--and ## from Korea.
Quite the sacrifice for a small town.

Have you received a card from the VA or a Nearby Mental Health Clinic yet?
One of the Commanders spoke of it today and wasn't too pleased with the confusion coming from th VA.
I'm surmising it was about PTSD and will look into it.
Sounds like out-reach clinics the VA may use at local Hospitals with excellent Mental Health Clinics .

'Nuff said. Case closed. Anybody who disagrees, blow me. I gotta go flip ribeyes.

Red, white and blue ribeyes.........

I frankly dont care if you barbeque, go to the park, go shopping, go see a movie, get your nails done, or whatever else you want to do. If you are inclined to remember and memorialize someone that you knew or even complete strangers, then you should do that. You shouldnt feel compelled to do anything.

Of course...all of this not withstanding, you DO understand it was still stupid of the democrat party rep to post a pic of Obama eating an Ice Cream under the heading "Happy Memorial Day!"...right?

There's no such thing as the "democrat party."

I would have preferred an "other" option, as I don't agree with either. I think people have gotten Veterans' Day (honoring living soldiers) and Memorial Day (honoring dead soldiers) confused.

I don't agree with all the BBQing and stuff going on, because you are actually celebrating the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers who died for this country. I actually heard a waitress behind me at dinner tonight say, "Happy Holidays!"

However, I don't think we should sit around in quiet reflection, either. Maybe have rememberance ceremonies where the towns honor the soldiers who they've lost. Something like that. I just don't agree with the fact that it's a holiday to celebrate, with BBQ and going to the beach.

That's just me, though. Seeing people loaded with racks of ribs, and watermelon and fresh corn, and the lines halfway to the back of the grocery store today, I'm certain that I am in the minority.

No. Life must go on. I had friends that fought in Iraq, and if they were here, they would be having a beer and enjoying life with us. :hm:

Why wouldn't barbecue be ok? Is there something somehow sacred about ovens and microwaves that permits their use on this day of honor? People pick the weirdest things to get outraged about.

i get that there are some people who will look for any excuse to have a party, and that to them, the party part is all that is important.

but for most others, if they are aware of the holiday, then they will at least take a few moments to acknowledge the occasion in some small way.

drinking and grilling is not necessarily disrespectful. my grandfather served, and before he died, he asked that there be a luncheon after the funeral that was a "celebration of his life". we drank and ate and raised our glasses once or twice and toasted to his memory.

as long as you took just a little bit of time to reflect on the occasion, i see nothing wrong with making it a celebration. after all, they died so to protect our freedom to do whatever we want

We should enjoy the life that their sacrifice has bought. To honor the brave solemnity is not required, remembrance and appreciation is.

Well said.

I sense a bit of sarcasm. I'm not really sure if this is a serious question or not. Hell, I am an active duty member and I know all my buddies have their grills outside right now. So I am not really sure why you're asking.
