Great video...I mostly agree with it.

For me, America stopped being a great country (let alone the greatest in the world) the minute I realized that Gitmo was not going away anytime soon and that America had grown so cowardly that they were okay with that as a whole.

Plus the creation of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act and on and on...after these things I realized that America is made up of too many cowards to be a great nation. Too many people who are willing to throw honor and decency out the window every time a terrorist goes 'boo'.

Since about 6 months after 9/11, America is a disappointment to me.

I'll say up front that I didn't view the link - I don't listen to anything celebrities say about politics or world affairs - they are no more relevant to me than "man-on-the-street" interviews.

Secondly, I didn't respond to your poll because I didn't have an option that suited my view. Depends on your definition of "great".

For me, America is a great country - has been, and likely always will be, at least for as long as I'll be alive. But I'm Canadian and I believe Canada is also a great country with remarkable people, stunning and varied landscape, seemingly boundless resources, and a tremendous future. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. That makes Canada the greatest to me.

Greatest country? It's third world. The Baltimore riots says it all.

What does 'greatest' mean? America is a great country. It's just not the only one, that's all.

I can see where the term may have applied to ancient city states, notable for the singular grandeur and status of their historical period. Though I'm hard-pressed to see how any nation in modern times might lay claim to the title. What are our criteria?

Your nation? You are a leftist, America was never yours to begin with. And we will not compromise with ideas and actions harm and destroy this nation.

What on earth is the matter with you?

Okaaaaaay..........

Suggestion...stop drinking so much coffee.

We all saw what "your side" did to my beloved Nation last decade .

We spent too much. And btw, we only really had the presidency. A couple seats as a majority in any chamber, is no majority at all.

If you didn't see the video then go to youtube and search for "Why America isn't the greatest in the world anymore". You'll see it at the top there.

As for my thread failing...how do you know if you can't see the video and as such have no clue as to what is actually being said?
Questioning if the US is still the greatest nation shows a veiled contempt for our nation.

One would assume you take it as a whole. I have seen a fair amount of the rest of the world, and there is no place I would rather live, which sounds like as good a definition as you are going to get. We may not be tops in many measures, but we are among the best in almost all of them. We as a country are not flawless, but we are pretty damn good. The biggest problem we have these days to my mind is the culture of cynicism, the finding things to bitch and cry about and thinking it is no ****ing use to even bother trying. If there is one thing that might lead us to not being the greatest country some day, that is it.

:yt:

Well fricken' said.

America is still the greatest nation on Earth, ain't nothing changed.

As it becomes more and more as it is supposed to be, where natural given rights are no longer denied, my feelings are only reaffirmed.

Self loathing is a threat to America and complacency, an even bigger one. A history of both excellence and great innovation but also of great moral failures, let's continue the former and learn from the latter.

Is America the greatest Country anymore? Or do you agree with Will?

Lmfao, this video is still a thing?

Folks will believe anything if it's against the grain. :lamo

Which nation do you guys think goes around calling themselves the second greatest country in the world?

Nowhere near. Even just on standard of living alone, America has plummeted in the last several decades. Violence, education, health, community, quality of employment -- all in steep decline. Everything that matters to the average person has declined in the US. That is an objectively verifiable fact, and it is also my personal experience as an American who has lived abroad -- and ultimately chose to leave permanently. I'm in good company. There's an exodus of young Americans trying to escape. And believe me, it's only just beginning.

Was it ever the greatest? I'm not sure, honestly. America has lagged between almost every other developed nation on almost every rights issue that has ever come up during our entire history. It has always been a relatively backwards-thinking country in the scheme of developed nations, and it has always been slow to accept other human beings as human beings.

Those who still try to claim America is the best place on earth are most of the problem. They want to delude themselves into believing there are no problems, which is how America continues to fall down the ranks. Bury your head in the sand and the problem goes away, apparently. It's an ego game to them, like rooting for a football team. And they are why it is so hard to make any progress in the US. Their baseless sense of superiority matters more to them than their country.

Is there a greatest nation? Eh, I don't know about that either. I mean, define "greatest."

But if we were to try to measure that from the perspective of average people who have to live in it, I do know that America most definitely wouldn't be it.

Nice try but the USA has never been the greatest country. It has always been England and always will be. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble.

"the greatest country"

kinda depends on what that means to YOU

to me.....yes, it is, and hopefully always will be the best place on earth to live

the combination of our freedoms, economy, and people make it that way

i've been through over 30 other countries all over the globe

i like them for some things, and dislike them for others

the question i would pose would be

"is there anywhere else you would rather live?"

to that, my answer is an easy no. Places i love to go and visit.....but this is home.....and i kinda like it

No, and yes.

I love America obviously. It's badass. A lot of good things still come from here that other countries want and envy. Nearly every major thing we have had happen politically, socially, and economically had originated from America, but the past 20+ years or so it has been on a decline. Instead of mimicking what other countries that mimicked us in the first place, we call them socialist. I do believe America used to be the best country in the world. I still think it's at least in the top 5, but we need to do a lot to make it #1 again. And those Americans here that don't take pride in your country shame on you.

The US might not be the best country in the world, but it's easily the best of the big countries. Which big country is better?

I can't think of much of any metric in which the US still leads, except prison population, military spending, and billionaires. We have the best colleges for the time being i guess...

K-12, environment, debt, health care, GDP, per capita income, crime all come in nowhere near 1st. You'd think by the level of patriotism that more would at least show up to vote but nope. Whenever we do accomplish something, like we may legalize SSM soon, we're like the 17th country to do it.

It's unfortunate but undeniable. America is in a steady decline

I think every American should vote for that the US is the greatest country in the World. Because for Americans that should be the natural feeling and should not be influenced by "objective" facts and figures because "the greatest country in the world" is a feeling for most people.

I for one think the Netherlands is the greatest country in the world, especially to live in, but that is purely based on the fact that I am Dutch and proud of it. I love it and I love living in the Netherlands and would never ever even contemplate leaving it.

But that is not an objective thing, it is an emotive/emotional thing, a feeling of pride and love for your country. So Will might be right that "objectively" there are countries who are also great, but from a feeling, it is wrong, for your feeling it should still be option one, the greatest country ever.

It depends on what is important to you, I guess. I choose to live here instead of anywhere else because it is where my family and friends live. And it is where I keep all my things. I am also "used" to it. So it is comfortable.

But if I were to write a list of the things I find most important in a country, no, the US would likely not come out on top. Out overall quality of life is not the highest in the world, though we do have the best craft beer and movies. :)

The US is, by a wide margin, the most sought immigrant destination in the world.

Hey I am Dutch and I love/respect a lot of things the US was and is to itself, it's citizens and to the world as a whole. I may love my own country more but any self respecting person should be saying that of his/her own country.

And yes, sadly politicians in the US think that a limited bit of sharing the wealth around is an evil and bad word. Taxes is a curse word and local government use proceeds from tickets and court fines to balance their budgets because they do not have the guts to do it the proper way around, by taxes, fees and balancing the budget.
