The few Armenian-Americans I've known are passionate about this; their older relatives have seen to it that this genocide will never be forgotten.

Meanwhile, from WaPo:

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis on Sunday honored the 100th anniversary of the slaughter of Armenians by calling it “the first genocide of the 20th century” and urging the international community to recognize it as such, a politically explosive declaration that will certainly anger Turkey.

Francis, who has close ties to the Armenian community from his days in Argentina, defended his pronouncement by saying it was his duty to honor the memory of the innocent men, women, children, priests and bishops who were “senselessly” murdered by Ottoman Turks.

“Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it,” he said at the start of a Mass Sunday in the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter’s Basilica honoring the centenary.

In a subsequent message directed to all Armenians, Francis called on all heads of state and international organizations to recognize the truth of what transpired and oppose such crimes “without ceding to ambiguity or compromise.” Pope calls Armenian slaughter

How would you know? When was your last contact with Turkish Armenians?

Specifically Turkish ethnic Armenians? I dont know any.

I do however know many Armenians (there are many in the fire departments locally), and live in southern California which has a large Armenian enclave.

We talk. I tell them stories of the Greek genocide, and they tell me about the Turkish genocide.

Quite.

I very much doubt that they are very familiar with the groundswell of opinion amongst Turkish Armenians. D

And I guess you all feel bad for the Turkish victims of the Balkan ethnic cleansings of 1913-15. Kumbaya all round, eh?

I think its a good thing that Islamic expansion was halted in eastern Europe and Spain, and that an overly greedy and aggressive Ottoman empire picked the wrong side in WW1 (and just before the oil boom).

Europe and west asia is amongst the bloodiest soil on earth-that doesn't change the fact that genocide occurred.

Would they be willing to hear about the Norman conquest also?

Asking this question because recently one of my favorite bands System of a Down is starting a tour, and they are doing it in commemoration of 100th anniversary of "The Great Crime" (the Armenian Genocide) System of a Down to Commemorate Armenian Genocide | Al Jazeera America . This sparked my interest to see what DP's opinion on the manner is.

Many countries have not recognized the Armenian Genocide. Its a topic of heated debate. The US government has not recognized it, but 44 states have.

My question to you is: Did the Ottoman Empire Commit Genocide Against the Armenians?

Would have to read up on it. Got any books?

I suppose if a mass killing occurred...the only way to not call it genocide...would be if it had nothing to do with "race or religion." But then again...who knows?

The ottoman's were brutal.

Why not every massacre and genocide in history? This was you can use relativism to water down the meaning of everything.

You have that arse-about-face, as per. Relativism is the insistence that one genocide is terrible and evil and something must be done to rectify things a hundred years later, while so many others are not worth mentioning, didn't really happen , or "it was a good thing".

False dichotomy.

No amount of the dance of the leftist changes the facts regarding the Armenian genocide. That said, its remarkable he stands you choose to take.

You're the one doing the dance around the fact that you justified the genocide/ethnic cleansing of the Balkan Turks afetr the Balkan War of 1913 by saying "it was a good thing".

I set up no false dichotomy at all, your genocidal tendency is just further proof, if any were needed that your outrage/sympathy is entirely dependent on your ideological bias. Unlike mine, which if you bothered to look, left no one in any doubt that I want Turkey to own up to the historical reality of the 'shameful act', along with every other nation finding itself the inheritor of unrepented evil histories.

I don't even bother to ask how you can justify your hypocrisy, because I know. I think we all do.
