Should voting be mandatory?

No. What a telling notion, though.

I rather be given an actual reason to vote for somebody instead of being forced by law to do so.

I voted NO.

I would like to see some innovative ways to get the half that do not vote to actually vote. How about a prize where some civic minded people with hefty bank accounts get together and pledge to throw in a buck for every voter in a national election and ten lucky voters get to divide up the prize? That might encourage some folks to get out and vote.

For politicians, yes, it should be mandatory.

Bribing people to vote is just as bad as forcing people to vote.People should vote because they believe in the candidate they are voting for. Not because of some law forcing them, a bribe or some idiotic celebrity telling people they should vote.Quality over quantity.

Should voting be mandatory?

Hell no.It is bad enough that there are plenty of politically ignorant people voting. We should not want people who are not even remotely interested in politics being forced to vote. You think these people who are forced to vote going to look at ontheissues.org , votesmart.org or some other similar website to research the candidates?

Absolutely not. We have enough ignorant idiots at the polls already.

I agree - all the evidence anyone needs is my state is full of elected republicans....

More seriously, I don't think voting should be mandatory, but I would fully support a national holiday for major elections, and/or weekend voting. No reason to make it difficult or inconvenient, and Tuesday voting has never made sense on any level.

I would support mandatory military service before I supported mandatory voting.

As long as the rich get no benefits and no safe desk jobs no matter who mommy and daddy are, I think that would be the best thing evah.

I would support mandatory voting before mandatory military service. Forcing someone to fight, kill and possibly die for you is far worse than forcing someone to vote, imho.

I disagree. I think forcing the population to POSSIBLY fight, kill, and die for the actions of their politicians will result in MUCH more careful selection of said politicians.

Absolutely. I don't think voting should be made mandatory because that would present all sorts of constitutional issues...look at the Obamacare mandate and all the ink spilled and money spent over that.

But voting should be made easier, and that can be done without the constitutional issues. A national holiday for national elections makes the most sense. And absentee voting should be encouraged. The concerns that went into making a workday in November the day to vote are utterly obsolete.

Call it MOTIVATION TO VOTE or MOTIVOTE.

Bribery is such an unattractive word. And in this case it would not even be accurate.

There are reasons I've got permanent mail ballot status, I see no reason to stand in a line with a bunch of idiots to vote. I have weeks to fill out my ballot and put it in the mail. No muss, no fuss.

I call it trying to lure out those who don't really give a rats ass about politics to go vote for something they know little to nothing about. Many people voting already voting don't research the candidates. What makes you think bribing people to the polls is going to motivate them to research the candidates. If anything it make them want to vote for the guy who offers to make the voter lottery have more winners or bigger payouts.

anything given or serving to persuade or induce:

voting should be seen as a moral obligation, not a legal one.

No. I would argue that implicit in every right is its opposite: the right to be silent, the right to die, the right to give freely, the right to be unarmed. Not voting is a form of passive political protest, of refusing to support a system that does not represent you-- forcing someone to vote for the pre-selected candidates of the corporate machine is the same as taking away their right to vote.

Perhaps you would be happy with a test of ones knowledge so your can determine if they are fit for voting or not?
