Palcohol (as I just recently found out) is a powdered version of alcohol, that now has full FDA approval and will soon be showing up on shelves across America. It's a powdered version of vodka or rum or other spirits and even mixed drinks and could include sweeteners or other additives.

Everything You Want to Know About Palcohol, the Powdered Alcohol Approved by Feds - ABC News

ABC News said:
A product is expected to hit shelves this summer to turn water into wine -- well, into vodka, rum and a few cocktails -- but not everyone is happy about it.
Palcohol, or powdered alcohol, was approved this week by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, part of the U.S. Treasury Department. But the powder packets that can turn water into a mixed drink have already been banned by several states amid fears that Palcohol can be easily abused.
"As a parent, it's one thing to patrol for cases of beer or bottles of booze," said ABC News chief health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser, who is also a pediatrician. "But having to look for little packets, I worry that it could lead to more underage drinking, making it easier."
He said he wasn't happy with the federal approval and explained there isn't much the U.S. Food and Drug Administration can do it about it right away. The FDA can only take products like this off shelves if they find a problem, he said, which is what happened with alcoholic energy drinks called Four Loko.

Some states are set to be against sale of this product but the question is:

Once Palcohol is in the stores, will you buy it and try it? Is this a good idea or bad idea in general? Take the poll.

Meh- I'm pretty much neutral on it. I doubt it will make underage drinking any worse than it is. If kids really want to get their hand on alcohol, they'll do it one way or the other.

Am I interested in trying it? Not at all. I have my preferences in the stuff already on the market, and I often just buy pre-made drinks (margaritas, white Russians, coladas, etc.)

"Other."

Agreed with lizzie. I do not have much opinion on this one, I say we let market forces work this out. It should not be up to me what others consume.

I've tried four loko, the energy beer. this ****s got nothing.

Palcohol would be great for back packing/camping.

Though, I will try it out of curiosity, it sounds as though it might be practical as well. Let's see what it tastes like. I cannot really believe it will be good as cocktails, but it could be as gin or vodka.

That was what I was thinking. Why carry bottles, if you can save weight?

I have no opinion on whether or not it's a good idea. I guess some people will like it and others won't, as with any other consumer product.

I don't drink so I won't try it.

You could mix it with your urine as a survival drink.

I saw an interview with the guy who developed it - he said that was the reason he did.

I voted buy out of curiosity. Like most other products, whether I continue to buy would depend on whether I like it. The opposition, beyond that to regular alcohol, seems to be underage availability and that people might snort it or imbibe it without reconstituting. If kids want alcohol, they'll get it no matter what. But regulating and taxing Palcohol like alcohol might exert some control and would increase revenue. Since it's undiluted, imbibing without reconstituting might intensify the effect but a packet still is equivalent to only about one drink. As for snorting, the developer said that would be like snorting liquid alcohol - it would BURN!

It's a bad idea, too easy for kids to smuggle around.

Not if you require this on every package.

But that's about it and a very limited market there. Folks who backpack with alcohol don't carry the bottle now. They go with a lighter flask.

Considering the additives and the fact it takes a while to prepare, you're better off with the real thing. It's a pet rock idea.

Btw, weed is lighter than both and who wants to be hung over on a backpacking trip?

All they gotta do is open the package and transfer the powder. Very bad idea in my opinion.

Nah, you'd need both hands free to mix it.

Nah, alcohol dehydrates you - the more you drank, the less urine you'd have to mix. :lamo

The water had to go somewhere, so where do you think it goes?

They could put whiskey in a tea jug.

I'm not seeing the appeal. You can already get shots of whiskey, vodka, etc., in little plastic pouches. Why would you need the aggravation of having to dissolve this powder?

I wouldn't buy it but I'm not the one to ask, I don't drink. Ever.

Alcohol poisoning in the kiddies. Should not be tolerated. Too risky.

I think it's an interesting idea, and I don't see what the outrage is. The ratio of powder to liquid is just about 1:1, so it isn't super concentrated and dangerous. I kinda side with the creator that the recent push for legislation against it has nothing to do with actual danger but rather to do with the alcohol lobby.

What does this have to do with kids? How is powder any different from liquid when speaking of availability to children? The ratio is about 1:1, so there is functionally no difference.

I think the anti folks are saying the risks outweighs the possible benefits of the product by a large margin.
