I'm the patriot and Vietnam vet, The US did not win in Afghanistan nor Iraq nor Libya nor Syria nor Ukraine nor Cuba .crtainly killed men, women, children and dogs and goats in all of those places. You're a big blowhard patriot of the "kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out" category. I'm indifferent to Jews but don't like Zionists, but I know the difference. You Jewish gays just feel persecuted and that's not my problem, it psycho and it's yours.

Though one has to wonder if Germany would have gone into Iraq if it didnt have conscription at the time. The UK certainly wouldnt have stayed so long, a growing majority of the population was oppossed to the war but never did anything as they had no personal stake in it.

Replaced entirely? No. We'd need a professional Navy and Air Force at least, perhaps a lot smaller if we were giving up being the world's cop, but a professional Navy and Air Force would be necessary to our security in the modern technological world. The Marine Corps should probably remain, as we'd also need a smallish professional infantry force for rapid response issues.

If we were giving up policing the world and imposing our will on the shape of things, the Army could be reduced to a small professional cadre and replaced by the citizen militia, as you've indicated.


Along with the remaining full time professional Navy and Air Force (albeit perhaps much reduced, say to half or even 30%) would be sufficient to make an actual invasion of US mainland territory unfeasible for any opponent, assuming we maintain our tech advantage.


But the problem is that this would leave a power vacuum internationally, and it is guaranteed someone would step in to fill it, and it goes without saying that whoever the new "world cop" is would be looking out for their OWN interests and not OURS. That's the big downside...




So I have to vote No, with some regret.

My MOS says 'construction' but my NCO says 'dismounted patrol/security'. There are no front lines anymore, anyone who was actually in knows this.
 
I think it's a great idea for the people themselves to defend their nation and community. The government in this case uses the military (in most cases) to further economic or statist interests. I'm looking at you Iraq.

Oh...wait...they would have preferred that 70 years or so ago...

You seem to be doing all the chest banging here.

Yes, there should be a manditory term of service upon turning 18 or graduating highschool, and after that every able bodied person should participate in at least reguler drills until they age out.

Anyone not willing to put in at least that minimum is welcome to find another country to call home.

That's a call for a draft. No, a volunteer army is the surest self defense.

Correct, it's a draft. People who don't want to put the uniform on sure as hell aren't going to elect someone who will also send them to an unjustified war.

I never did, but now that we have signed up for endless war. We need to instill a desire to fight.
 
Well, the polling would indicate that most people are confused over the difference between a national defense force, and a belligerent offensive force based all around the world with regular engagement in adventurism.

Actually, in Starship Troopers you simply couldn't vote or hold office without service. Jerry has taken it to another level. He wants you forcibly removed if you don't serve, and even if you did serve you can still GTFO if you don't agree with him on everything.
