Oh, Yes, this little story is sure to come back and bite his ass.

Don’t trust Jeb Bush with the power of the presidency

I was disappointed by Michael Putney’s Feb. 6 Other Views column about the legacy of Jeb Bush (First round goes to Jeb, Feb. 4). Putney writes that it was “doctrinaire liberals” who opposed Bush’s involvement in the tragic case of Terri Schiavo — my then-wife.

Who is Putney referring to as the “doctrinaire liberals” who were horrified by the former governor’s intervention in my family’s trauma? The Republican Attorney General Charlie Crist, who refused to take up the governor’s crusade? Republican Senate President Jim King, who fought Bush on passage of “Terri’s Law?” Pinellas County Judge George Greer, a Republican and Southern Baptist, who looked at the evidence of my wife’s case before having his rulings tossed aside by a governor who never met her?

Does he mean me, a registered Republican?

The truth about Jeb Bush is that he used my wife for his own personal political gain. You don’t have to be a doctrinaire liberal to be angry about that. In fact many conservatives were also horrified by Bush’s zealous intervention.

Maybe, hard to tell at this stage of the game.

Obama survived Fast and Furious, Reagan survived Iran Contra, GWB survived the Plame affair, I would realistically look at no, I honestly don't believe the public cares about scandal

Wasnt her husband the guy that was really upset that the money from a medical malpractice suit was going for her actual care and not his wallet?

Oh man...the flea circus that we are about to be exposed to for the next 2 years.......

They might, if the scandal happened 2 weeks before the election and it was still in the 24-hour news cycle. The American public has no memory though, all of these things blow over almost immediately and nobody remembers anything about it a couple of weeks down the line.

Let's put it this way, it does not have to be anything more than a bump in the road. It all depends on his opponents. If he gets attacked on it and he defends his choices to the maximum it can cause issues with people who do not believe politicians or government should interfere in this kind of a manner with a personal tragedy.

And the second issue is when he says that with hindsight he was wrong to interfere, he may look weak, may look less of a politician that has less of a pro-life profile, etc. etc.

But so far it will look like just a bump in the road.

A bigger problem might be Barbara Bush saying that we do not need another Bush in the White House. How will go move on from that one?

No, it'll be a complete non-issue in the 2016 campaign.

I'm a supporter of Jeb and it gives me great pause. I think it will pop up again and definitely remains the blackest mark on his political record.

He forgot to mention that the whole issue was that Terri's family - her parents - didn't want her to die. I know it was all about him and his family, but the person at the center of the story had a family too.

If people don't want to vote for Bush over this, then I'm sure Huckabee or Walker or Santorum will be happy to get their vote.

I think anyone who would decribe themselves as pro-life would have the same problem, execpt they wouldn't been as involved as Jeb Bush was. So, all three of those people you mentioned potentually have the same problem as well.

Chances are anyone who won't vote for a pro-life candidate didn't plan to vote for Bush or any of the others anyway.

No! He has a BUSH problem. No more Bush's in the American White House.

I think his big problem will be stand your ground. He was the Florida governor who got it passed. Immigration and SYG will be his problems.

Around 30 more people voted in this poll that have viewed the thread.

Jeb Bush's biggest problem in running for president will always be that George is his brother, and a hella lot of peeps will see the name "Bush" on the ballot, and immediately look for a different box to check.

yep, the schiavo incident will be something jeb will have to explain to the American public
reminding us that he provided the woman's family an opportunity to allow the issue to be resolved in the court, rather than ending her life such that a court decision in their favor would have no effect
while i disagree with his decision, it is one easily understood and easily communicated. don't see that many Americans would vote against him knowing his rationale
now, hillary trying to explain away travelgate is an entirely different matter
and then there is whitewater

SYG wont hurt him, floridas law is very reasonable and once explained to people no one will oppose him for it. want a little trivia?

Floridas SYG law was partially copied from a Washington State Supreme Court Ruling in 1917. (State v Meyer) which is the basis for Washington's stand your ground law which grants far greater leeway to private citizens then floridas law, no one would hold such a thing against a political candidate from Wash. SYG is a manufactured issue by a handful of fringe pro-murder/rape/robbery extremists.

Indeed.

The circumstances under which Schiavo was found unconscious were never fully explained, BTW. Not that this matters now; she's long dead. Her husband wasted no time in beginning a new family, however, while she was still alive. He certainly moved right along.

I would have been a little more compassionate to his side of the story if he didnt come across as bitter angry and hate filled.

She'll be aiiiiight. She just has to go to church.

I remember his getting involved, and thought even then that it was a political ploy to get votes. It was just awful, what he did. He should have stayed out of it, and left it to the family.

That creature had a head full of Jello and Jeb had no business overruling the courts, the doctors and her husbands wishes. The sickest thing is that those that wanted to keep that mindless body functioning were supposed to be religious yet did everything they could to prevent her soul from going to heaven. It shows how much they really believe. They would go to any lengths to play God but not trust in him.

Hillary certainly will be happy that Huckabee or Santorum gets the vote.

What do you have against bush?

I said Bush's.....plural. Even if I liked any of the Bush's, no more Bush's. Do you want a dynasty, or a democracy??

Are you finished with Clintons, or would you welcome another of them as well?

Don't be a partisan, be an American and support something new.
