John McCain has said about Angela Merkel, the first German prime-minister to have grown up under the oppression of the Communist East Germany, that she is just like the politicians who were guilty of appeasing Adolf Hitler.
He said in an interview for the German television:
"Does she just want to stand by and watch how a European country, the first time since the second world war gets trampled?".
He also has harsh words for the German government, whom he says has a foolish attitude towards Ukraine, when he says:
"If you look at it, you would think that they are completely clueless or that they do not care that the people in Ukraine are being butchered"
But is Merkel wrong for not delivering weapons in the hands of what for all purposes intended people who overthrew the (at that moment) legal leadership of Ukraine? Are the Ukrainians not in part themselves to blame for at least part of the problems with the Russian speaking part of their own population?
Because the first thing the new government did, instead of working towards a more pro-Western policy, was banning the Russian language and talking about making a law that would ban Russian language media in Ukraine.
Banning the sales of weapons to Russia fine, boycotting the Russians fine too, supporting the Ukrainian government in a lot of things is fine too, but giving them weapons? Has that ever worked if the other side is going to use that excuse (of us arming the anti-Russian Ukrainian government) as a justification to send in Russian troops and masses of Russian troops.
Maybe forcing the Ukrainians and Russian Ukrainians to negotiate and make a peace treaty restoring the status of the minority rights back to before the latest government rules to undo those rights (supported by Ukrainian nationalists)? Or should we pour in weapons/troops?
