P5 + 1- Iran Nuclear negotiations
Countries involved in the negotiations- P5+1
US-Russia –China-UK –France-Germany

Republicans and some Democrats are pushing for new sanctions in the event the negotiations fail.
The Administration’s stance is that this would be counterproductive the negotiation.

Some point to consider.
If negotiations fail, attacking Iran would only slow the time required to build a bomb.
You cannot put the Genie back in the bottle.
Deal if made must be verifiable – Trust be verify -

If they achieve Nuke capability, other ME countries will/would also acquire the bomb. Saudi’s would buy it from Pakistan. And the world can do what?

Obama and Congress Approach an Impasse on Iran Sanctions - Defense One

A potential showdown is looming between Senate Democrats and the White House over Iran, one that could lead to the first successful veto override of President Obama’s tenure.

BBC News - John Boehner invites Netanyahu to Congress on Iran

Fascinating that Mr Boehner's first act since the State of the Union is to invite Mr Netanyahu to address Congress on the subject of Iran's nuclear ambitions. He doesn't trust Iran, and believes the west is about to make an historic mistake in trusting Tehran to show good faith on the country's nuclear ambitions.

Last night Barack Obama was arguing that negotiations were at a delicate stage with Tehran over a deal. A deal that would be jeopardised, he believes, by Congress voting for tougher sanctions against Iran at this stage.

The "negotiations" have been going on for so long that there would have been a deal, if Iran wanted one. They are obviously not cooperating according to the SC resolutions. But they know Obama wants a deal and they can buy time to develop the weapon by dangling the prospect.

Given the history between the 2, no.
Given that Libya gave up nukes- no
They will want security guarantees.

Yes it would be good to have the Sanctions in legislation and ready to go, should the Iranians come up with any more excuses.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is to appear before parliament following controversy over a promenade with his American counterpart during intense nuclear negotiations in Geneva, state media reported on Sunday. Zarif, who leads Tehran's talks with "P5+1" - the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China - had a 15-minute walk down Geneva sidewalks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during discussions on Jan. 14 aimed at reaching a settlement of the 12-year nuclear dispute between Iran and the West.

The United states and other Western countries have long suspected the Islamic republic of seeking nuclear weapons know-how, but Iran insists its program is geared to production of non-fossil fuel and scientific research.....snip~

Then there was that issue about turbines for their Subs and other parts, huh?

Are you sure the Democrat Menendez is a Neo Con? When did he switch over?

Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) criticized the Obama administration’s Iran rhetoric for sounding “like talking points that come straight out of Tehran” and supporting “the Iranian narrative of victimization” before a Senate hearing on Wednesday.....snip~

Menendez: Obama Iran Rhetoric Sounds 'Straight Out Of Tehran' - Breitbart

And some people think senator bob menendez is full of crap..

Last week our senior senator made history. He became the first one-time chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in living memory to undercut a president of his own party at a time when U.S. forces are involved in warfare.

That occurred after the president’s State of the Union speech, when Barack Obama called on Congress to butt out while he engages in negotiations with Iran over a number of key issues central to sorting out the current mess in the Mideast.

That mess stems from the actions endorsed by Menendez and several other senators whom I hereby dub “The Axis of Lunacy.” The axis is bipartisan, including Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John McCain of Arizona.

All three spent the past few years pushing for the U.S. to take an active role in supporting the rebels fighting to oust Syrian dictator Bashar Assad. The theory was that once Assad was deposed the grateful people of Syria would set up a nice, neat little democracy.

That never works. As has happened in other countries, Islamic fundamentalists took advantage of the power vacuum. The Sunni army called ISIS promptly created an Islamic State in Syria that soon spread into Iraq.

That put the president in a tough position. If he wants to beat back the Sunni forces who’ve taken over much of Iraq, he needs the help of the Shias who run Iran. But at the same time he also has to negotiate with the Iranians over their nuclear program.

The president could sure use some sympathy from the senator who helped him get into this mess, but instead he got this from Menendez in response to his speech:

"I have to be honest with you, the more I hear from the administration and its quotes, the more it sounds like talking points that come straight out of Tehran."

It wasn’t the talking points that are coming out of Tehran. It’s the Iranian ground troops that are entering Iraq to fight alongside their fellow Shia against the Sunni extremists.

Then there are those Iranian fighter jets that are supporting Iraqi forces in the fight. They’re U.S.-made Phantoms, by the way. We provided them to Iran back in the 1970s when the Shah was still in power. First they were used for us, then against us and now for us again.

When you examine the history of our involvement in the region, the only possible conclusion is that our government is completely, totally and utterly incompetent when it comes to micromanaging the Mideast.

That includes all three members of the axis. Typical was this statement Menendez put out less than two years ago when he was calling for Obama to set up a no-fly zone to help the rebels oust Assad:

"It is clear that we must act to assure the fall of Assad, the defeat of extremist groups and the rise of democracy," the senator said in April of 2013.

Oh.....and like Iran isn't?

Iran's parliament has started to draft a law that would allow the country's nuclear scientists to intensify their uranium enrichment, a step that could complicate ongoing talks with world powers. The move, announced Saturday by parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, comes after U.S. lawmakers said they were planning legislation that could place new sanctions on Iran. "This bill will allow the government to continue enrichment, using new generation centrifuges," he said, referring to more modern machines that would speed up production.....snip~

Odd...

The u.s announces that it is considering legislation to implement further sanctions on Iran.
If negotiations fail, then a couple days later Iran announces that it is considering legislation to speed up development of its nuke program.

Gee it feels like that Iran is acting in response to what we are doing.

Point being the Democrat is not a Neo Con.....and showing Hillary didn't help your case.

Hillary Clinton whiffs on Iran, embraces Obama’s policy.....

According to news reports, she backed the extension of the P5+1 talks and insulted critics of the administration, insisting, “Forget about the press coverage and the back and forth. Nobody can argue with the commitment of this administration to Israel’s security.” Really — no one legitimately can observe that the administration’s scurrilous comments about the prime minister (and bragging it is now too late for Israel to strike) damages Israel; that accusing sanctions proponents of being “war mongers” undercuts the military option and may inhibit Israel if it needs to act in self-defense; that making concession after concession to Iran is cosigning Israel to live with a nuclear-capable genocidal state; that seeking detente with the country that pines for Israel’s destruction is injurious to Israel’s survival; that backing Hamas patron Qatar’s truce in the Gaza war and condemning Israel’s conduct of the war make it harder for the Jewish state to defend itself; that insisting negotiations with the Palestinians beginning from the unsustainable 1967 borders is a recipe for Israel’s insecurity; and that publicly blaming Israel for the collapse in peace talks feeds international efforts to delegitimize the Jewish state? Heck, Democrats have done all that.....snip~

Hillary Clinton Supports Obama’s Opposition to New Iran Sanctions .....

JNS.org - Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a Canadian audience on Wednesday that she supports President Barack Obama’s threat to veto a new Iran sanctions bill. “Why do we want to be the catalyst for the collapse of negotiations?” Clinton asked during a speech in Winnipeg, in reference to a bill proposed by US Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill).

The new Menendez-Kirk bill expands on existing sanctions on Iran’s financial and energy sections, and would kick in if Iran and world powers fail to reach an agreement by the end of June. The Endowment of Middle East Truth (EMET) said Clinton “fails to grasp the meaning of the Menendez-Kirk legislation.” “Far from being a diplomatic handicap, the Menendez-Kirk sanctions legislation is a diplomatic guarantor that the negotiations will be a success. … It is patently clear that the bill serves as an incentive for successful negotiations,” said Sarah Stern, president of EMET.....snip~

Odd that 2 deadlines were allowed to pass.....despite Iran not willing to comply, with purposeful intent.

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan stated at a press conference on August 2014 that Iran’s missile capability issue was not included in the comprehensive talks with the P5+1 countries and "will by no means be negotiated with anyone".[156].....snip~

Comprehensive agreement on Iranian nuclear program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

Personally, I believe little of what we're being told. Iran, with the exception of the period when the Shah [which we helped install] ruled, has never been a friend of the West. It would not surprise me to learn that they never stopped working on being nuclear armed even when we were negotiating with them. It did buy them time, so I guess there is a reason why Israel keeps bombing their facilities from time to time - they are Iran's number one target.

I wish I could find the article where Iran vehemently denied that something we were told was close to being agreed upon - they said it was never even discussed! I wondered at the time WTH was going on! Iran is still a major contributor to, and trainer of, the terrorists that are gobbling up other ME countries, and it doesn't seem to be lessening, does it? The elite live well, it's the people who are suffering under the sanctions. And let's not forget that Russia is an ally of Iran, and probably have their own game in play.

That would be over their military facility Parchin, Lady P.....and their ballistics program. ;)

So who was telling the truth? If Iran lied about that, can they be expected to honor any agreement that would be made if they have such faulty memories?

Put this way Lady P back in 2011.....the Saud, Qatar and the UAE talked with China to get them to push for Harder sanctions. They are still talking to them. The Saud have stated if Iran gets their Nuke. The Saud will have theirs too.

And now we are talking about lifting sanctions on Iran? Well I'm going to go with the Saud on this one, and I don't blame them or any other country who feels the same way! China, Russia and the US are the big boys in the UN, and those three countries you listed couldn't very well go to Russia, since Russia is an ally of Iran. Is it reasonable to assume that they fear a potential WW3 as a result of what's going on over there, and the way it's being handled?

Funny how ISIS is tearing the middle east asunder yet the saudi's and their allies are more worried about a country that belongs to the opposing religious sect.

ISIS is the bigger threat here.

The Saud isn't worried about ISIS.....they got a fence.

The Saud is only concerned about Syria being given to the Sunni to run and govern.....and of course subjugation of All Shia.

And what do we have to gain by indulging the saudi's religious vendetta against the Shia?

Former adviser warns Obama on Iran.....

Former Obama adviser Dennis Ross has been outspoken over the last year or so in urging the administration to use leverage against Iran to reach a deal on nuclear weapons that would be acceptable to the West. When the president in his State of the Union address instead threatened once again to veto sanctions, it reminded us that the administration is ignoring all outside advice and living in its own parallel universe in which reconciliation with Iran is viable.

In an event hosted by the pro-Israel group JINSA this past week, Ross virtually pleaded with the administration to stop chasing a deal. “The question is: what happens over the next few months to get a deal? It’s pretty clear at this point that the Iranians don’t feel much need to conclude an agreement, even though the P5+1 has demonstrated an awful lot of flexibility,” he cautioned. “Therefore, it’s important Iran not believe that we want an agreement more than they do. […] We can’t get a long-term deal unless we raise the price to Iran of refusing it.....snip~
