Oddly enough, a good number of US citizens put Cdn flags on their backpacks as well. Why is that?

so we ugly Americans are not recognizable internationally

Time to have some innocent fun.

I've got a pretty good dog, keeps to itself mostly but every now and then it comes and puts it's head in my lap wanting to be petted and have it's back scratched.
KnowhatImean?

Every Canadian I ever met has tried to surrender ;-)

Just kidding. Very nice people. I worked along side a Canadian sergeant on an assignment and we always busted each other's chops. I ended up visiting him and his wife in Canada and had a really great time.

I think so, but I am probably wrong.

I go to great pains to be a traveler, not a tourist.

then you won't have as much need for for the appearance of canadian citizenship
unfortunately, so many ugly Americans have stigmatized our national image

Never said, nor implied that. I have worked with a number of US Military when I was in. Fine soldiers.
In my present employment I still meet a number of US drivers. Rare in the extreme to have an issue with them.
As to what people put on their backpacks, well I do not.
I also leave my Military ID tucked away.
I also carry a dummy wallet for just those times when someone may ask- hand it over.
Little bit of cash in it to satisfy their need not to get violent.

Well, I stay out of the resorts, don't do tours, I ride buses and subways, and I blend in (not so much in Asia or Africa). Most of my travels lately are just quick 3 day weekend trips to Mexico or Hawaii, but I've been everywhere and plan to go to all the other places I haven't been. Most important thing you can do is to read up on the culture, learn a few words, and don't be a dick. Also, know enough about football (soccer) so that you can strike up a conversation, it is always a great topic whereever you go.

but the reality is the ugly American image is a real one internationally
canadians are thought of much more favorably
hence the use of canadian imagery ... eh?

well, you have identified one of the very superior subsections of the American population
especially today with the all voluntary military
not representative of so many embarrassing Americans abroad

did the same as a young guy in NYC: junky money. having nothing to offer got you killed. still a good idea in many undesirable urban neighborhoods

the ones I have met seemed down to earth, mostly.

I'm sure Canadians aren't all alike though

We actually are.

We pretend to be different, but we all drink beer for breakfast, we all play hockey, live in igloos as summer homes, and smoke pot.

Oh, but some are different, they don't kill baby seals.

Except the seal hunters. They drink Canadian Club.

OK, I have met some US Citizens while traveling that were rude and ignorant. The majority I have met, sat and had a chat or a beer with, nice people.
I found on average, Brits to be rather more rude and ignorant than Americans, these are my experiences.
As in anything, when in another country it is in how you present yourself and interact.
Please, thank you and a smile goes a long way.

... other then the igloo thing, i'd fit right in with Canadians.

I can go either way on baby seals, though... i guess that makes me a "centrist"

Fact, there are more gun owners in Canada than the US.

Fact, guns are easier to purchase than the US.

More Canadians hunt than any other developed nation.

And we have oil....

more gun owners?.... surely you mean as a percentage of population?

I mean, going by raw numbers, we have far more gun owners than Canada has people.

They are cool, my grandfather was a native New Brunswick-ian. Only thing that bothers me is how every one of them puts Canadian flags on their luggage when they travel. Are they THAT afraid of being hijacked?

Really?

You think we put Canadian flags on OUR luggage from fear of being hijacked?

I suggest you might want to spend more than three days in a place to make such a judgement on as diverse a country as Canada...we are not even a nation, we are a collection of cultures.

From some 30 years of international travel it has been my experience that as many American sew Maple Leaf's onto their backpacks, because they fear attacks. I have a Maple Leaf on my carry on, which assures me I never get searched or harassed.

And you leave out one fact which should be obvious to "patriotic Americans", maybe we're just proud of our country, one that has never seen a race riot......

Yes, of course.

The US has more guns per individual with all the collectors etc.

But a greater % of households have guns than in the US, almost exclusively for sport.

Ironically, we have only begun to arm our border guards and security on Parliament Hill. I think we don't like seeing guns.

Lol that's the most hilarious thing I've heard all day. I've never heard of any American putting any flag on their luggage, let alone another nation's flag. Although as a soldier, I proudly wore my flag on my uniform when being on a plane :)

Canadians live in the GREAT white north, thus they are GREAT people.
Silly poll

Calm down.

Igloos are surprisingly warm. But maybe you would want to start with this first
Hotel de Glace — Quebec City's Ice Hotel

As to seal meat it is a little bit similar to liver (just a little bit), which is good because I like liver.

aww christ... I know English, Spanish, and Japanese.. but not French.

**** it , i'll hang out here in Texas.. Texans are pretty much like the Canadians i've met anyways.

Spanish and French aren't that far apart you could always just fake it, when in doubt use Japanese and put a French accent on it, people will just think you're an Acadian
