Should the United States be a member of NATO?

Should the U.S. be a member of NATO?

This is a kind of a ridiculous poll in that if the US left NATO, the alliance would effectively cease to exist.

Of course. We're one of the founding and central members, and though it costs us we gain from it as well.

It would be rather silly to leave Nato. Why would you think otherwise?

I don't think otherwise. The other day I was reading about SYRIZA in Greece and how they had modified their platform and they now support Greek membership of NATO, something they formerly opposed. I was curious if any rational arguments could be formulated against NATO membership since I've never really encountered an argument against it before.

From this proud Canadian's perspective, NATO is one of the few multinational organizations that I'm proud we're a member of and I would hate to see the US leave even though Canada and the US have other bilateral national security agreements over and above NATO membership. From my perspective, NATO could be expanded and replace both our country's membership in the United Nations which is a useless body run by petty tyrants and despots and some of the vilest "governments" in existence. Create a new Federation of Democratic States and go from there.

Problem is the US is carrying everyone's water.
A former Chief of Defence referred to the period under Liberals as the decade of darkness for the Canadian Military.
Our spending then had dropped to 1.2 for GDP.
It is now at 1 %.
NATO works, but as mentioned many countries refuse to pony up.

Americans are always on about leaving NATO, but as soon as there's an issue they call NATO. Kosovo, Ukraine, Libya...

I agree, the UN needs to be abolished. How stupid was it to give the world's superpowers and bullies a complete unassailable veto? The UN is a giant Ponzi scheme of global wealth distribution, from the have country's pockets into the pockets of corrupt patty tyrants. It is toothless and irrelevant incapable of even dealing with trade wars.

Canadians meanwhile need to awaken to the fact we have as good allies to the North, Iceland, Norway, etc, as OUR waterways come under global pressure

The US is carrying IT'S water....

And, while you repeat the Tory meme about oh-how-****ing-bad-it-was under the Liberals, you glibly ignore the contribution this country made in Afghanistan. There is NOT ONE American soldier who will not attest to the fact the Canadian military is the best trained and among the toughest in the world. Canada took more casualties in Kandahar by ratio than any other nation in the conflict.

I guess it's considered "Canadian" in some circles, like the Red Green Show, to make fun of the Canadian military, but in fact it's more American than Canuck.

So dis away....it's am really old story.

I did not laugh at, nor denigrate our Military.
Now if you wish, open a Thread on the Canadian Military. Otherwise Buck rant away and imply things I did not.
