Does owning a hand gun for protection make you more safe or less safe?

The woman who was shot and killed by her two-year-old son at a Walmart in Idaho wasn't safe, if she didn't take her gun she would be alive today. She was less safe.

It wasn't the gun which made her less safe. It was her stupidity.

Rubbish.

interesting argument.

I wonder if you have the same sentiment for those whom were killed by their airbags deploying when they were in an auto accident?... did purchasing car with airbags make them less safe?

Wouldn't you also have to compare these statistics with statistics where a gun protected people, for them to be valid as it pertains to the topic of the OP?

Not to mention that being "safe" does not necessarily simply talk about "violent death". The other question about such statistics is whether or not their including suicide deaths by guns in their total

It only makes you "less safe" if you don't know how to handle a firearm properly.

Neither. It doesn't make you significantly more or less safe.

If she had not taken her two year old to Walmart with her she would be alive today as well

Clearly, two year olds make you less safe [/pbaurer_logic]

Yep, and if folks didn't drive (or ride in) vehicles then they wouldn't die in traffic accidents. That incident was caused by careless handling leading to an accident. The very reason that gun accident story made the news was because it was so rare - unlike traffic accidents which are so common that they are not often even considered news.

at first i thought you were going to say Walmart makes you less safe.... but your version made me laugh.

its like a snake bit kit or a defibrillator. If you know how to use one, it can save your life

its like a motorcycle or a pair of skis or scuba gear-if you are trained, guns are great recreational tools

if you are ignorant, stupid and don't get instruction it like all of the above, can seriously hurt you or kill you

I train all the time. I constantly take refresher courses with top professionals. I teach people from beginners to master class competitive shooters and police/military. So I say it makes ME safer

the terrible twos for sure!

If you're a responsible gun owner, I'd says it's likely to make you as safe to more safe

If you're an irresponsible gun owner,, I'd say it's likely to make you less safe to about as safe.

And by safe I'm talking about being physically injured or killed, having your person or home robbed/stolen from, or feeling emotionally threatened or in danger.

She is safely in the arms of her loving God as only gun owners go to heaven.

Airbags are meant to save lives, guns are meant to kill.

Airbags are meant to save lives, guns are meant to kill.

Actually, the guns that are the subject of this thread, for self defense, are meant to save lives. But I'm not surprised you cannot tell the difference.

Nope, that's your logic, not mine Zyp.

That might be true, but all too often they kill innocent people.

That may be true, but more often they protect innocent people. Nothing is without risk to innocent people. Why do you want to deny people the right of self preservation?

I am not denying anything countryboy, she had a perfect to to own that gun and I support that. She was described as a responsible gun owner. I think this nation is gun crazy, it a sad state when people think they have to carry gun in order to feel safe. Far too many people in this nation own guns in my opinion.

She may have been described as a "responsible gun owner", but the incident proves that she ultimately wasn't.

I apologize if I mistook you for a gun grabber. Glad you support the 2A.

I don't mind you holding the opinions you do...

i care about actions, not opinions.

I don't own a gun but it's a strange question to ask. Who would own a gun and say it makes them feel less safe?

There are unintended consequences with things that may improve/protect quality of life that can be damaging without knowledge. I could own a cooker which I presume kills pathogens on the food I eat and improve the taste. But I could be ignorant and get a takeaway chicken one night and poorly reheat the leftovers later that week. I could die from that basic ignorance.

Don't own something you feel you can't use responsibly.

is that an oblique way of saying gun haters are all leftwing atheists?
