Probably Truman. He became President and had to make some of the most difficult decisions but during one of the greatest times in this nation's history. Not just dealing with dropping atomic bombs on Japan to their eventual surrender, but also dealt with everyone coming home with the Employment Act of 1946, handling Henry Wallace, and the Truman Doctrine to deal with Communism in several European nations, and the Marshall plan to deal with all the economic problems of a war torn Europe. I am not defending every decision he made nor every single thing he said... just saying he had to deal with a very difficult time period for the US and the World, there should be credit for that.

Just factoring in their terms as VP, or their overall careers?

If we're doing their overall careers than probably Jefferson followed by Roosevelt with Truman farther down in 3rd.

Wallace for VP, Benjamin Wade for almost president.

To be honest, I don't even know how to weigh a VP's performance.

Ford-kept the country together and put that ahead of winning an election

Where's Biden?

He keeps me laughing, he wins. Also, he can really rock aviators.

VPs don't do anything. If you're speaking solely of their time as VP there's really nothing to distinguish any of them because, as I said, VP is basically a do nothing job.

If you want to look everything VP's have done in their careers I'd go with Jefferson and the Roosevelt.

I'm going to have to go with my man John Adams on this one.

I am not just judging them as a VP because until the last couple of decades, VP's didn't really do anything. Judging them from their entire life in politics, of those listed I would have to say Teddy Roosevelt. No other president embodied the American spirit more than he did. Moreover, if it were not for him (and later LBJ), we would have no great swaths of untouched land left in this country. Instead we would have the tended garden type preserves one finds in Europe, not the true wilderness we have preserved here.

""The farther one gets into the wilderness, the greater is the attraction of its lonely freedom." ---Teddy Roosevelt

This was my backyard where I grew up (Ouachita National Forest) and it was entirely the doing of Teddy Roosevelt:

What other VP or President has impacted our lives that much?

This. One, VPs don't do much, relatively. And I take the question to mean only as VP, not anything else they may have done either before or after.

Ford is my choice. He was the level head needed at the time. I mean that as VP as well as President. He went out of his way to be a stabilizing force... as much as could be done... while VP. His work as VP is pretty much unrecognized today, and his Presidency is very underrated.

I will admit that, while I pick Ford, I am relatively unfamiliar with the work done by others when they were VP. My knowledge of VP-specifics is limited as well. Ford is one of the few that I do know about.

I'm reading Kern's dual biography of Roosevelt and Taft right now. Excellent book if you haven't read it already. Sagamore Hill is about a 20 minute drive from my home on Long Island. When the renovations on it are done this spring I'm planning to visit.

I read this a few years ago. It is a bit tedious though:

This is a really good one though:

Al Gore invented the internet, which which this poll wouldn't exist.

Not that I would pick him, but surprised Nixon isn't on the list.

Nixon served IKE well as he did the nation as VP especially during IKE heart attacks. One has to remember VP Nixon was not like the vindictive President Nixon of 8 years later.

I guess I never really understood the parameters of the poll. Is it about how well they did as VP or their body of work?
