Bourdain is on the short list of people I'd love to get stinking drunk with.

My wife's cousin was married to an Iranian ex-pat and he and his friends in the ex-pat community always struck me as just regular guys trying to get through life like everyone else. Figured that was because they were probably Americanized to an extent. Apparently not.

I loved the whole "if you want the best food you have to go to someone's home" and hospitality aspect of the show. There's something good to be said for a people that seem to welcome strangers in that way.

And was I the only one who noticed how beautiful a lot of those women were?

There's absolutely no doubt just how horrific the Iranian régime really is. It could be argued that it still enjoys widespread popular support too, although how anyone would go about measuring that support is anyone's guess. What seems equally self-evident to me is that a large proportion, large minority or actually a silent majority, do not want that régime, do not support it and are yearning for change, although there's also no evidence to suggest they hanker after a western-style 'liberal democracy'. What shows like this teach us is that you cannot talk about nations as homogenous, unified entities. Iran isn't the enemy of the West, although the Iranian régime certainly is.

Some Iranians may not be, but the country certainly is. And it gets its power from taxing the people, and enlisting them in the military. And brainwashing them with religion. That some people are friendly doesnt really stop others from trying to kill americans.

I guess an Iranian poster could say exactly the same about the US, and they wouldn't be wrong. What's wrong is equating the actions and attitudes of a régime with the collective will of an entire nation.

Its not wrong. That IS the generally prevailing attitude. The difference is that in the US, we fight to defend freedom. Iranians dont.

I like Anthony Bourdain, even though he's a big lefty.

As far as Iran goes, I dont think any American believes that it is the Iranian citizens that we have an issue with.

Their hospitality and friendliness doesn't negate the rhetoric and the Nuclear aspirations of the Theocrats who've vowed to drive Israel into the Sea.

It doesn't negate the fact that Iran is a huge State sponsor of Terrorism.

I'm sure Bourdain didn't touch on those issues.

Actually he did, to the extent the IRanian militias and govt allowed him to.

Anybody watch this last night?

Food star Anthony Bourdain tells of a ‘different Iran’ than expected

Not surprising, but also highly informative.

Beer drinking, pizza eating, American muscle car loving, family oriented people just trying to live their lives to the best of their abilities.

Also - NOT hating America, although not forgetting that America supported Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war which included Iraq using some pretty hideous weapons on the Iranians.

I especially liked the one scene where Anthony was having a HUGE formal lunch with a family and the father specifically stated "we are not the axis of evil".

So I'm wondering what your thoughts are regarding the show.

I love his shows! He is one of a few inspirations that led me late in life to work and live abroad. As for this particular show, I have not yet seen it, but would like to do so.
