I have been watching football today and saw this add for the first time. IMO it is racist in every way. The white guy is portrayed as a goofy little nerd while the black couple look cool and trendy. Conversely the black couple is also portrayed as preferring fortified liquor products to fine wine. I can't believe this is on the air.

Redd's Wicked Apple Ale TV Commercial, 'Refreshingly Hard' - iSpot.tv

I voted not racist in the least of course because theres no racism in it. No educated, honest and objective person would vote any other way. any racism in it is made up and a person viewing it as such is part of the problem LMAO

Not necessarily. It is a negative thing only if we make it something sinister, evil, or racist.

We all have stereotypical images in our heads that we have fun with re the Irish, Scots, Italians, Germans, Dutch, Russians, Eskimos, Jewish mothers, the historical American Indian, accountants, musicians, scientists, preachers, movie stars, etc. etc. etc. etc. And whichever of such groups we fall into, we can laugh at the stereotypical images of this group or that group that is all in fun. And anybody who has any intelligence, common sense, and sense of humor understands that it is fun and it is fun because there is a grain of truth to the stereotypes. It is because we know it is all in good fun, that it does not define any one individual, and that it is intended as good natured that renders it benign, harmless, and a positive way to socially interact.

It is high time American society stopped treating black people and a few other sub groups as if they were some kind of fragile beings who must be treated with a great deal of deference and kid gloves lest they be somehow harmed or damaged if they are offended in any way. It is high time we stopped seeing black people as different from everybody else and start allowing them to be treated like everybody else.l It is high time we started allowing black people to be full citizens subject to being teased about the good natured stereotypes like everybody else is.

Of course if we refuse to allow things to be racist, we take the power and profit out of racism, and there are many who will strongly resist that. But it is how we once and for all put racism as an issue behind us. Skin color should be of no more importance and require no different language, deference, or careful treatment than eye color or hair color. When we all can say that, then we are no longer racist.

Hi AlbqOwl.

The stereotype of an Albanian lacked in the USA audience till recently. But now that we are communing more with the technology it seems we are getting our fare share of stereotypes also. I am a bit concerned that the chosen repeating stereotype is skewing exposure from other potential Albanian stereotypes. Not to mention that the chosen Hollywood stereotype of Albanians is too negative for a start.

Here I made a thread about it. Some history and how the Albanian stereotype portrays us mostly today is mentioned there:

Not sure about racism, but what about stereotyping? Have you seen some of the Kmart coms?

Are we saying that all black and hispanic kids talk like hoods?

I thought they were tailgating at a football game and they couple was supposed to be just a regular couple. Like maybe they're targetting a black middle class demographic in the upper 20's through 30's.

Yes, targeting them with the standard fortified swill they are "supposed" to drink.

There is no racism in this commercial at all. The ethnicity of the people could have been switched and it would have had the same effect.

Bottom line- no racism at all. Also, buy a good craft beer instead.

Right, blacks can't appreciate a good wine, just give them their Colt 45 and send them home.

can you point out the part of the commercial that even HINTS at that lol
where was the GOOD wine, also is that a common tailgate beverage for sports fans?

there is nobody educated, honest and objective that will ever see racism in that ad lmao

Come on now...you are reading WAAAAAAY too much into it.

Instead of seeing the people as just people...you immediately see them as a white guy and two blacks.

I saw it as just a guy and a couple.

Try not looking at people as races and just as people, humans.

Hollywood and now Madison avenue have portrayed white men especially conservative white men as buffoons since they advent of Archie Bunker. You and most others in here and in America have become so used to this that you don't even see it anymore. IMO this add was to cute by half though because as they tried to portray the black couple as hip and trendy they were still trying to sell them the same old crap they market to blacks constantly. "You guys don't drink good wine, that is acting white. Here's the liquor you like. Now drink up nappy heads" I find it disgusting and the lyrics to the song I posted earlier go into this in detail.

you're welcome but it seems just like the false assumption in the OP you are making another one. Your mistake.

1.)Is Colt 45 beer?
2.) The stuff they were selling is the same crap that blacks are supposed to drink. Read the lyrics to the song I posted earlier.

1.) no its malt liquor and again that is meaningless to the commercial LMAO
2.) what are "blacks" supposed to drink and again no they are not the same.

so again your strawman is still a complete failure and Ill ask another time since you dodged it, is beer racist?

The add was selling malt liquor not beer and that is racist. Asking about beer is the straw man here.

So even though Redd Apple Ale is barely considered malt, anything with a hint of malt cannot be marketed to black people otherwise it's racist?

Yes, blacks are "supposed" to drink this sweet high alcohol crap because drinking a good wine swirled in a wine glass is "acting white".

1.) once again you are factually wrong the ad is selling an ALE its even in the name LMAO
also selling malt liquor is NOT racist
2.) also wrong but thank you for proving that you are severely uneducated about this topic and showing that like the failed OP you have no support for your claims.

redd's wicked apple ale

ale is a type of BEER which is TOP or BOTTOM fermented and can be low in alcohol content
malt liqour is a type of american beer that is BOTTOM fermented and is 5% or above

neither are racist and once again your mistake and your strawmen continue to fail.
Please let me know if i can help educate you any further on this topic.

You know what? I and a lot of people I know watch a lot of movies and television, read news and commentary voraciously, spend a lot of time on the internet scanning political sites and participating on message boards, and I am going to venture that not a single one of them thinks about Albania much at all, much less in any kind of stereotypical negative kinds of way. So all that stereotyping must not be having much of an affect on one tiny country with a population approximately the same as Chicago IL. I wouldn't think about Albania at all if Coach on the old sitcom "Cheers" had not made up a little ditty about it when he was preparing for a geography quiz. The ditty was pretty catchy and not at all negative about Albania.

The point is, people can choose to be all offended about the stereotypes or they can choose to have fun with them. Those who are offended at the slightest perceived stereotypical comment and see racism in everything I believe are what is keeping racism alive and well. Threads like this one are rampant, not only at DP but all over the internet. Racism is almost as favorite a topic to debate as religion is and it is almost invariably generated by somebody being offended or insulted or somebody's perception that they should have been.

I suggest that the non racist start pushing against political correctness and take the power and profit out of racism by seeing and treating all people the same meaning that nobody is considered too fragile to be treated like everybody else or good naturedly teased like anybody else. Morgan Freeman got it right in this interview with Mike Wallace:

While not technically malt liquor it plays into the same mindset that blacks need some high alcohol sweet and cheap drink and drinking anything else is acting white. A real ale is something like Sierra Nevada pale ale not some syrupy apple flavored crap like they are marketing here. I have to wonder why you seem so angry about this subject. What do you drink I wonder.

To see any possibility of racism, simply becuase the actors used in the ad are of differing races, makes little sense to me. BTW, which race is being shown as inferior/superior and how? It is hard to make alcoholic beverage commercials becuase you just can't do the obvious - show someone enjoying the product being used as intended (actually drinking it).

EDIT: One must remember that this ad is on during a football game - is it likely to be made to appeal to loner, "cultured" nerds savoring a fine wine or to ordinary folks just wanting to enjoy a beer with their partner/friend?
