The former American Dream died with the first WELFARE payment. Now it takes a special kind of person to seek out the old American Dream.

Or is it a special kind of person that seeks out the welfare programs. It isn't easy to optimize that kind of income. It takes a New Breed.

Yep! Bill Gates had tough. No dream there.

for everyone, of course, has Bill Gates' background, upbringing, and ability.

come on.

The "American Dream" is such a detestable concept. It's so idealist its mind numbing

There are lots of successful people. Just look at the wealth rankings. Of course, it depends on where you are born. But look at guys like Obama. Most won't make President. But neither does every Bush.

i think that the American dream should be independent of where you are born and who your parents are.

Well, then it never existed.

Well, then it never existed.

yeah, it did, and still does. it's just more difficult to attain now, and i outlined the reasons in my initial post. perhaps you should reread it.

For the purpose of answering the poll question, please use the following definition:

"life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. [James Truslow Adams, 1931]

For those who believe the American dream is dead and for whatever reason/s they have given up striving to attain it, it most assuredly is dead. But for the one, the dreamer, the striver, the one who believes all things are possible, it is not and chances are that dreamer etc. is either in the process or has achieved the American Dream.
