Simple question: Should Nonviolent drug offenders get their voting rights back?

I say yes. Should of never been taken away in the first place.

Yes, because they shouldn't be felons to begin with.

All people who have paid their debt to society should get voting rights returned.

I vote yes, simply because the felony system as we have it now is broken in many ways. One other way it's broken is you can be charged with a felony if you were drunk and pissed on a tire or side of a building, as well as get put on the sex offender registry list.

All felons should have the full of their rights recognized by the State once again after the full of their punishment period has been completed.

Errr ... Are we talking about dopey college kids that were caught selling marijuana, or are we talking traffickers importing bricks of cocaine?

Anyone whom the state has deemed safe enough to be released in the public should have all their constitutional rights reinstated.

There are many who believe people stupid enough to chose to commit a felony already decided they didn't care about all their constitutional rights.

In Canada, even those currently in prison are entitled to vote. In Canada, if you're over 18 and a Canadian citizen, you have a fundamental right to vote and you do not lose that franchise. As a result, I could not suggest that American citizens should be treated in a lesser manner.

EVERYBODY should get their voting rights back once they have completed their sentence. Automatically. No questions asked, no application necessary.

Only possible exemption: If the felony involved voting/election fraud.

Good afternoon Ocean

I have to say, if lack of intelligence is going to be a disqualifier, there's going to have to be a serious purging of the voter ranks regardless of criminal record status.

I'm OK with making the dividing line intelligence (OK, I'm actually being facetious, but it's an interesting thought experiment).

If you think voter ID laws are getting a rough ride, just trying giving voters a test before you hand them a ballot.

As long as they don't go back to using. Too much chance of voting Democrat.

The NSA will have all the information we need to determine intelligence, no need for external tests. Of we can just say that only those with PhDs in science, math, and engineering can vote.

Good day to you CJ. I can't argue with your logic.

Somewhat simple answer, based on a question...

Do other non-violent law breakers get their voting rights back?

If yes, then sure.

If no, then no.

Drug users aren't special. Just because you, me, or anyone else disagrees with the laws doesn't change the fact that laws are there and they're knowingly breaking them. Unless at some point it's deemed those laws were unconstitutional, they should not get their voting rights back if the same doesn't happen for other individuals who violate the law in non-violent ways.

Does someone who commits a felony selling firearms illegally get their voting rights returned to them? If not, neither should someone selling drugs illegally. Does someone who commits a felony regarding the carrying a firearm in some fashion get their voting rights returned to them? If not, then neither should someone having drugs on them illegally.

Clearly, academic proficiency isn't necessarily a determinant of actual intelligence - just look at the current occupant of the White House.

No. Dont commit felonies and you have no problems.

Are you always unquestioningly compliant with what your betters tell you to do? In other words, do you agree with our lawmakers that everything they say is a felony should be a felony?

He doesn't have a PhD in science, math, or engineering.

Plus, I was being facetious.
