"Politcal Correctness" - False Victim hood or Real issue.

Is Political Correctness real?

"Political correctness" is not new, and the attempts to create more thoughtful and inclusive phrases stems from the civil rights movement, which begat the women's movement, which has begat....

"Ms.," in my opinion, is critically important. "Police officer," "mail carrier," and etc. are not just more inclusive; they're also more precise.

But political correctness can be dishonest and manipulative (for example, calling illegal immigrants "undocumented workers") or just plain silly (for example, referring to inmates as "involuntary guests of the state").

The PC being railed against by so many here is largely a late 1990's version promoted by the American right as a club to beat opponents with.

At one point it was used in an ironic way by leftists, when one of their number made a particularly egregiously racist or sexist comment , then another would point to their statement not being politically correct (as if there was a party line being broken)

Political Correctness is more than the alteration of one's choice of words in order to avoid either offending a group of people or reinforcing a stereotype considered to be disadvantaged to the group. It's about placing restrictions on what we can say and how we say it to restrict debate and silence opposition. The practice has a history of going back to the 1920's in Germany and anyone with an understanding of history will be able to put two and two together. What started out in the 60's with feminists now reaches into Science where it punishes anyone who criticizes the theory of relativity or liberal dogma about global warming. It's reared its face in sports with the example of the name of the Redskins found offensive by a group of thin skins.

Yep, it has evolved into a threat to the First Amendment Free Speech.

In fact the concept of political correctness was cooked up long ago by European communists as a way to silence people they considered heretics. It was imported here, where it has been popularized by leftists of various stripes.
We're not talking about early 20th century Europeans, we're talking about 21st century Americans. 21st century Americans who refer to "political correctness" use the term in an attempt to silence currently and historically marginalized groups. And it has certainly not been "popularized" by "leftists", it has been popularized primarily by those on the right who favor tradition over progress.

I don't want to debate this issue with you, but I can't agree. I don't know of any conservatives at all, either personally or in public life, who favor political correctness. True to its roots, it has from the beginning been pushed in this country almost entirely by radical leftists. It's part and parcel of their effort to split this country into a multitude of grievance groups, each of them seeing itself as the victim of some oppression or other and thinking its members are entitled to some form of reparations. Bunch of weak sisters.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the term "political correctness", not the reality that the term claims to point out. Now that I see I misunderstood, I agree. It is the left, not the right who advocates what you and other conservatives call "political correctness." That said, I find the term "political correctness" to be absurd which is what I was arguing in my original post.

From the Ferguson POLICE CHIEF:

THE FERGUSON POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCED THIS MORNING THAT ALL GERMAN SHEPHERD POLICE DOGS WILL BE REPLACED BY COON HOUNDS, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CITY IS NOT HAVING ANY PROBLEMS WITH GERMANS.

* WARNING: If you laughed at this e-mail, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Jeremiah Wright will be comin' over to deal with your racist, cracker ass....

The problem with "PC" is that Left Wing intellectual authoritarians use it as a method to try and silence opinions they disagree with, and forcibly reshape culture to their own ends.

Ironically, their primary means of doing so revolve around the very type of over-generalized "branding" and "labeling" that P.C. is supposed to prevent in the first place.

i.e.

If you criticize any culture other than your own, you are branded as being a "racist."

If you criticize a life style you find questionable, you are branded as being a "sexist" or "homophobe."

If you criticize weak domestic policy, you are branded as being a "fascist."

If you criticize weak foreign policy, you are branded as being a "chauvinist" or "jingoist."

If you criticize behaviors which perpetuate poverty, you are told that you need to "check your privilege."

Etca, etca...

It's basically just an underhanded way for certain kinds of people to hijack and destroy any discussion they don't like using pre-rendered logical fallacies that completely ignore the legitimate points that their opponents may have been trying to make.

Personally I see "political correctness" as a mental illness.

1. Trying to stop retailers from saying "Merry Christmas."

2. In various areas changing "Christmas" to "Winter Holiday."

3. Pushing the lie that gay sex and gay marriages are perfectly proper and legitimate.

4. Forcing kids to eat Michelle Obama-approved lunches.

5. Kicking God and Jesus out of everywhere they can.

6. Saying it's improper to use the term "illegal aliens."

7. Forcing Christian pastors in the military to perform gay marriages, etc., contrary to their religious beliefs.

8. Obama & company downplaying terrorism - i.e. labeling the Ft. Hood shootings as "workplace violence". Turkeys.

9. Banning students from wearing 'American Flag' shirts, etc.

10. Giving all kids on a team trophies because they don't want there to be a 'first place' trophy in case the others might 'feel bad.'

There's a hundred or thousand more but those are some that came to mind.

One of the former mayors where I live managed to get himself in trouble on #2. He officially changed the name of the Christmas Parade to "Holly Jolly Holiday Parade" in order to pander to the politically correct crowd...then he headed to a college football bowl game. He did not get to enjoy the game as his cellphone kept ringing with complaints. By the time the game ended....it became the Christmas Parade again.

I'm saying that Alinsky's tactics are appropriate in some situations when being passive and silent means living with oppression, squalor and poverty.

I would love to see you articulate a rationale for that. Even though he personally denounced Nazism and Russian style communism, it was the same methods that Alinksy taught and promoted that allowed Hitler and Lenin/Stalin to come to power. Whenever the argument is that we should be able to demand what we will have at the expense of others, we give license for the worst of the worst to take whatever they want and assign the rest of us whatever they think we should have whether that be something or nothing or crap.

And political correctness is an early symptom of the intended totalitarianism as it demands that others give what is demanded, use the language that is dictated, submit to a specific social protocol, and suppresses all inconvenient truths that could disrupt the process.

Perhaps one of the greatest efforts of the PC Militia is when they take comments out of context, edit them to invent a new context, and then spread the invented context around the various PC Militia news outlets so these enemies of their agenda can hopefully be destroyed.

That's a real problem that should expose those who participate in such antics as the tools they truly are.

Some things are offensive regardless of their context. Like most people, I say things sometimes that some might consider offensive, but I don't bitch about the "PC Culture" or "PC Police" if someone is offended by it.

But then my actual point stands that it's still "political correctness." Saying tea-bagger offends some on the right, the same way other words may offend people of that "group."

Either you can say these words, or you can't. You don't get separate rules for the TP.
Uhhh no.... intention means everything with words...
If you want to use the word Teabagger in a honest non-insulting way.... then go for it, I don't think anyone should mind. But I don't think you could that with honesty.

I mean you can go for it anyway, but I'm just saying I don't think it's contradictory when it comes to insults.

Insulting is all the same... all of them are meant to do the same thing... we just think they are different, because insults try to pick at hard truths... or implied hard truths.
just meant to be annoying....

Intention is everything

I think if you are confused on the intention of a word.... you just simply ask.... and the speaker will give you their definition and why they are not mocking you.

If you criticize any culture other than your own, you are branded as being a anti-Christian or UnAmerican.

If you criticize a life style you consider environmentally irresponsible, you are branded as as a "tree hugging enviro-fascist."

If you criticize bigotry against minorities, you are branded as a "pervert," "terrorist sympathizer" or "race baiter."

If you criticize US aggression abroad, you are branded as being a "appeaser," "terrorist sympathizer" or "surrender monkey."

If you criticize behaviors which perpetuate poverty, you are told that you are "instigating class war."

Hitler and Stalin used assassinations and mass murder to gain and maintain power, Alinsky used protests, humor and boycotts to help those who impoverished and oppressed, never violence. He stood up for working people, oppressed minorities and the poor when doing so often was met with violent repression. I suspect one of the main reasons conservatives love to criticize him, besides his many successes, is largely because his name sounds Russian and Jewish. The people who hold all the wealth and power never give up their privilege unless they are threatened with violence or public shaming. Alinsky used public shaming.

"...Alinsky once explained that his reasons for organizing in black communities included:

Negroes were being lynched regularly in the South as the first stirrings of black opposition began to be felt, and many of the white civil rights organizers and labor agitators who had started to work with them were tarred and feathered, castrated—or killed. Most Southern politicians were members of the Ku Klux Klan and had no compunction about boasting of it....

His early efforts to "turn scattered, voiceless discontent into a united protest" aroused the admiration of Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson, who said Alinsky's aims "most faithfully reflect our ideals of brotherhood, tolerance, charity and dignity of the individual."[4]

As a result of his efforts and success at helping slum communities, Alinsky spent the next 10 years repeating his organization work across the nation, "from Kansas City and Detroit to the barrios of Southern California." By 1950 he turned his attention to the African American ghettos of Chicago.....

Alinsky once threatened to stage a "fart in" to disrupt the sensibilities of the city's establishment at a Rochester Philharmonic concert. FIGHT members were to consume large quantities of baked beans after which, according to author Nicholas von Hoffman, "FIGHT's increasingly gaseous music-loving members would hie themselves to the concert hall where they would sit expelling gaseous vapors with such noisy velocity as to compete with the woodwinds."[13] Satisfied with his threat yielding action, Alinsky later threatened a "piss in" at Chicago O'Hare Airport. Alinsky planned to arrange for large numbers of well-dressed African Americans to occupy the urinals and toilets at O'Hare for as long as it took to bring the city to the bargaining table. According to Alinsky, once again the threat alone was sufficient to produce results.[13] In Rules for Radicals, he notes that this tactic fell under two of his rules: Rule #3: Wherever possible, go outside the experience of the enemy; and Rule #4: Ridicule is man's most potent weapon...."

So-called 'political correctness' is about informing the clueless that the words they ignorantly choose to use are usually chosen with an intend to disrespect, dehumanize and belittle those who are different or unpopular. Those who are aware of that and choose to use those words regardless should be called out for what they are: bigoted, disrespectful bullies. Is their any doubt about the intent of most people who use words like wetback, nigger, faggot, camel jockey?

Does it bother you if I say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas?
Why would it? For the very word holiday is derived from Holy Day. I wonder how many people actually know that one.

Well I don't look to Wikipedia for Alinksy's views. I read Alinsky. And also the mindset of those who wish to be the word and behavior police (aka PC police.) Do have a nice day.

What positions or actions did Alinsky take that you find objectionable enough to compare him to Hitler and Stalin?

With the introduction of social media it has become more and more difficult to escape the "news" no matter what it's covering. As a result discussions of every little thing under the clear blue sky is becoming more and more a common past time, for all ages.

With that the intrinsic social issues that are rampant throughout societies world wide- women rights, male rights, gay rights, racial rights, etc - get a lot of air time. And as a result there are some who appear to be weary of issues that seem to never go away. So in comes the new or reintroduced "it" phrase. "Political Correctness".

It appears that now, regardless if the issue has any merit and is in fact morally or ethically insidious , those who are sick of discussing it dismiss it as "political correctness". They insist that the everyone is too "Sensitive" and that "it's not that big of a deal".

The phrase is so over used and simplified that it is become a tired argumentative fallacy. Instead of engaging and honestly addressing an issue, those who refuse to see for what it is simply cry "PC" and go on their merry ol' way.

It's rampant on this forum as well. It reeks of false victim hood, where those who belong to a privileged class that often is contributing to the misfortune of another people essentially cry out because they are being stripped of their right to subjugate, harass, alienate, or otherwise mistreat others. It's silly.

But that's my perspective, what's yours?

Is PC a real thing? Are people too sensitive? Or is PC a cop out excuse used to sweep pressing issues under the rug?

I think a little of both. There certainly was a time in America when folk freely expressed all manor of bigotry, racism, and homophobia. The "N" word flowed off people's lips as freely as "dinners ready". I think there was room for correction, and a pivot toward more tolerance. But there's a human idiosyncrasy which causes the pendulum to swing too far one way or the other. When it gets too far in one direction, it gets pushed back. But it spends very little time in the middle, the best place. By that I mean that we're now headed toward the opposite extreme, and in that direction, there's fair chance that freedom of speech will be infringed upon. Wish we could keep the pendulum and the right balance, in the middle.

I used to work for one of the major food companies, and they tried to change Christmas to "Winter Holiday." I went down to HR and raised Cain. The head of HR said it was done so as not to offend anyone who has different beliefs. So I said I guess it's ok to offend the 70% of us who are Christians but not the 1 or 2 percent who might object?? Then I said, "Listen, Craig, you claim to be a Christian yourself. Why aren't you taking a stand against this nonsense? After all, Christmas is a federally-approved holiday." So I got him mad. What it ultimately took was my sounding the alarm to enough people who complained so that they changed it back to Christmas.

They did the same thing with Easter, renaming it "Spring Break."

They're a bunch of politically-correct a-holes. And a good many up in management who go along with some of these things are ***** Christians. Pansy-as*es.

PC is about speaking accurately and avoiding unintentional insults directed against groups of people. While I think most people can appreciate that, there are always some assholes that are happy to insult groups of people. They revel in being scumbags, insulting groups other than their own and otherwise relying on group identity politics in order to have any self worth. Often, such inconsiderate and largely illiterate morons are the same people that claim no racism exists today, women are inferior and "black culture" is destroying America.

Railing against considerate speech, both intellectually and socially, is the realm of dumbass rednecks.

Interesting what you can learn from what some people might call a dumbass redneck over a drink or two. From what I've seen, most of them are just regular people, at heart.

They just didn't grow up in leafy suburbs, with Mummy boasting to everyone about how they were only four, but already were learning French from flash cards and had a taste for Camembert. And Daddy wasn't asking them if they'd rather have the BMW or the trip to Europe as a high school graduation present. More likely, they grew up eating fried baloney sandwiches and wondering if they'd get swatted after Daddy had had a few.

It's not saying considerate things that bothers me. We should all do that. It's self-righteous control freaks who want to coerce other people into not saying inconsiderate things that bothers me. I don't like the fact some people have bigoted views, either--but God damn it all, I will always defend their right to have them. We don't punish thoughts in this county, and within broad limits, we don't punish unpopular speech, either.

The way for fair people to deal with bigots is not to make up a bunch of coercive rules about what they can and can't say. It's to try to reason with them, first--and if that fails, to refuse to talk with them, or have anything to do with them. Ostracism can be a very effective moral sanction.

Considerate speech? Is that what you call it when it is designed to silence another from speaking what they actually think? To push such a thing that makes others afraid of repercussions if they dare state what they actually think? Because the collective think groups want to silence any opposition from what they are selling? If you say so. But basically what it boils down to is violating the free speech of others in the name of your delicate sensitive ears and eyes that don't care to hear it like it truly is.
