A registered nurse and were talking about the president's announcement to assign thousands of US Military troops to fight Ebola. She was baffled saying it isn't a military matter, its a medical matter. The topic of quarantine came up. In our nice guy culture I would we have the will to essentially sentence people to involuntary confinement for the greater good or would be endanger the lives of millions for not having the will to make hard choices?

Do you believe that the govt doesnt have plans for this already? I'm not saying they are good plans or plans that will succeed but they definitely have them.

And it will be incredibly ugly. It starts with strictly curtailing personal liberty without due process and it goes to shooting American citizens that attempt to break thru quarantine barriers.

Do we have the will for that is a good question. But....who's will are we talking about? The govt will assert its will, supposedly with the greater good in mind...saving the most people.

The troops and National Guard and police sent to enforce that will...it will come down to heir own will.

Like I said. Ugly.

The US military is uniquely qualified and prepared to deal with biological hazards in a medical setting. US military medical personnel are some of the most highly qualified medical personnel in the world to deal with training local medical staff to deal with Ebola or any biological hazard.

The US military can build clinics and hospitals faster than any other construction type organization you can name.

And, that's what they will be doing - building hospitals and clinics as well as training locals on how to treat Ebola patients without getting infected themselves.

So, unlike many instances that the US military is sent in to perform what some feel should be a civilian mission, in this instance, it makes perfect sense to use the US military given their unique qualifications and the unique hazards present.

And, as for the poll question - there are numerous plans in place already. At federal, state and local levels.

Here's one that I've been working on under a contract I have: http://www.msema.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/BiologicalIncidentAnnex.pdf

Naaaa.

Let it be free..thins out the heard.

Gets rid of the riffraff.

Ebola is not "highly contagious" as the op claims, simple precautions will stop the spread. However people in Africa are superstitious and don't trust doctors and that is causing the continuing spread.

I don't know if a lot of people realize just how bad the healthcare system is in these countries and many others in Africa. They have almost no medical infrastructure outside of their capitals. Its mostly just a smattering of small concrete "clinics" with no electricity or running water. Places where a real doctor might swing by once a month and are usually only manned by volunteers with an elementary education and no formal medical training. Its not that people don't trust doctors; its that there just aren't very many and absolutely no truly adequate facilities. Instead they usually have to rely on the aid of NGOs, IGOs, and charitable organizations when and where they provide it.

The reason is spreads so easily in Africa is because the people there bring their dead home and prepare the bodies for burial. Entire families get wiped out that way. In the hospitals, they also often have to care for their relatives....bringing them and changing their sheets, bring food and feed them, bring them their bedpans, etc.

exactly my point death superstitions are exacerbating the problem and all it would take is some latex gloves and masks the outbreak would die down quickly

I'm not sure it's that simple but that would help if you could supply them and convince them to use them.

If highly educated and trained doctors can get Ebola then what is to stop some idiots here in the US from spreading it around?

Nothing except for the fact it is hard to spread and people get very sick quickly and aren't able to spread it. It's only slightly harder to get HIV but more deadly we don't go all chicken little whenever we see someone with HIV.

So is ignorance bliss?

Its OK, time to kill a few millon Americans. First to go will be all the do gooders and unfortunates that Obama sends to wastes of dirt like Liberia.

I don't know if a quarantine is called for at this point, but I do know that it seems strange to me and many others that people are flying from various west African starting points and when they land in Europe, Canada, the US, they suddenly have symptoms and are rushed to quarantine in hospitals in those locations and tested. So far, I don't believe any cases have been found here or in the US, other than the doctors/nurses mentioned, but seems to me it would be nice if there was some more structured travel restrictions in place from these and neighbouring countries where the outbreak is detected.

Several years back, Canada and Toronto in particular suffered from a serious SARS outbreak that was the result of infected people traveling into Canada from the Middle East resulting in several people dying, including many healthcare workers.

I tend to believe they do.

But putting it into action is a whole nother matter.

Businesses can have as many procedures as they can fit into a booklet but when the time comes, procedures are only as good as the precise incident described occurs.

It ignores nuance and the true unpredictability of human behavior, both by those affected and those trying to enforce.

Obviously not, ignorance about Ebola is causing panic

Ebola is not as hard to spread as HIV. If it were doctors treating it wouldn't wear hazmat suits.

I dont know what you are speaking to here.

Businesses??

Nuance and unpredictability of human behavior? The govt knows pretty much how they're going to react: the public and at least some of those tasked with controlling them (the latter will fail and abandon their posts/responsibilities).

The circumstances and contingencies and scenarios have been expanded on in fiction for decades...

I don't think a quarantine is needed presently but I do think I might be a good idea to start talking about so if it is required at some point, we'll be mentally and emotionally prepared.

Hell YES. This isn't a political issue...IT'S A MEDICAL ISSUE.

If someone has ebola they get quarantined.
Period, end of discussion, no questions.
I don't care if it's the ****ing president.

Containment problems are to my knowledge the entire reason ebola is as bad as it is in Africa.

False assumption. HIV requires sexual activity to spread it...the doctors are not having sex with the patients. (HIV is VERY hard to spread except thru sex).

But any contact with bodily fluids can spread Ebola.

Yes, but believe me....if it gets here it will be a huge political (meaning economic) issue.

I see a lot of ppl on this forum downplaying the seriousness of this disease!

That's exactly what I said.
