Does "Islamic" really mean "what we in the West want Islam to be", or does "Islamic" mean... well.... Islamic.

Sparked by the below:

...Given the First Amendment alone, there’s something un-American in any government official simply declaring what is or is not a religion. Bush’s formulation in his September 20, 2001, address to Congress was better: “The terrorists practice a fringe form of Islamic extremism that has been rejected by Muslim scholars and the vast majority of Muslim clerics; a fringe movement that perverts the peaceful teachings of Islam.”

Regardless, I’m not the kind of purist who would object to Obama’s version — if it worked. Aeschylus first noted more than 2,400 years ago that the first casualty of war is the truth. And if saying that the Islamic State is guilty of religious false advertising makes it easier to win a war, that’s fine by me.

But does it work?

Bush’s assurances that “Islam means peace” had little to no discernible effect. It’s unlikely that Obama’s non-Islamic classification will do any better.

Anyone who thinks jihadism is authentically Muslim won’t change his mind because Obama (or Bush before him) says so....

If we’re talking clarity, I’d say the Islamic State is clearly not Mormon. Or Lutheran. Or Buddhist. It most certainly is not the most extreme example of Quakers gone bad ever recorded.

As for its not being Islamic, that’s at best unclear, if not just clearly wrong. And the fact that the majority of its victims are Muslim is irrelevant. Lenin and Stalin killed thousands of Communists and socialists; that doesn’t mean Lenin and Stalin weren’t Communists and socialists. If such terrorists who kill Muslims aren’t Muslims, why do we give them Korans when we imprison them?

Prior to the Islamofascist form of Islam that has spread across the Middle East, you didn't see females in many of these Muslim countries covered with head dresses, burkas and Sharia Law was not enforced. Not as far back as the 60's that I could find. The extremists who were often clerics began to poison the minds of their followers and were the crux that encouraged the teaching of hatred and intolerance of other religious faiths. Now we have had multiple decades of children raised to hate their neighbors and women often having less rights than the family goat. Quite frankly, I personally am sick of the BS. These people have hijacked a faith, using a few Scriptures in their holy book to justify their heinous behavior. But that is what all extremists do. But in the Jewish faith and the Christian faith, you always find those willing to stand up against extremism to keep it in check. In the Muslim faith not so much. If they want to claim to be decendants of Abraham, I suggest they study the character of Abraham before they continue. Nuff Said.

Does the pope **** in the woods?

Does a leopard change its spots?

Yup just as Westboro is Christian, the KKK is Christian, and the Pope is Catholic.

A whole lot of Bears took a big dump on a football field last Sunday.
Does a bear **** in the woods?
And just today, a bear was caught on camera yanking on a flag in a hole on a golf course .

Wait a minute. Westboro being Christian and the Pope being Catholic are kinda different things.

Yes.

I would say it is more islamic than most muslims.

The KKK and Westboro are pervert versions of Christianity as is ISIL a perverted versions of Islam. Extremism usually is played out of bounds.

You know people with your type of thinking is rather ignorant and dangerous. The Westboro Baptists do not represent the Christian faith. Neither do the KKK. And the pope only represents one faction. Those who are not Christians love to point out the extremes within those who claim to be Christians. There have been a lot of heinous things done in history in the name of Christ. They were declared to be just by not so perfect men. This crap is getting old. You are one on this forum that grabs every headline you can to diminish those who are genuine in their faith. Stick a sock in it.

Yea I know. Wasnt morally equating the two.

I didn't mean moral equation, I meant regarding the legitimacy of each claim. Certainly, most would claim Westboro are extremists that do not truly follow Christianity, while I think everyone agrees the Pope does represent true Catholicism.
