There was both conquering, and merging.

For example, during the destruction of the Aztec capital, there were more native Mexicans in Cortez's army than there were Spaniards. Likewise, after the defeat of the Aztecs alot of their former vassal tribes were merged. Some probably more willingly than others.
Indian tribes had a tradition of 'merging' defeated braves that fought valiantly. Of course...if they chose NOT to 'merge' they were brutalized. Their women and children were also 'merged'.

Whether a term is a slur or not should be dependent on whether it is being used as such. Not on what any one group thinks currently. If someone went and made a team called Crackers and did so because they like cracking heads I sure has heck wouldn't get offended. If someone made the team name Crackers just to take a shot at whites in a degrading term then yes, I'd find it offensive.

We research history for two reasons. One is to just simply know. We are curious creatures that simply like to know everything that we can. Second is to not repeat past mistakes. Unfortunately that second part there is often ignored and is instead used to place blame and condemnation on groups of people. As such it overrides any type of intelligent thought and progress.
I SO wish someone would start a team and pick 'Crackers' as their team name. Even if it is meant as an insult (which makes zero sense when it comes to selecting a team mascot), it would still be funny as hell.

Out of curiosity, do the Native Americans those team names reference think they're racist?
Not the question.

Here, let me help you...

Please note that this thread and poll are asking for YOUR opinion. If you feel the need to defer to others and their opinions, then this thread is not a good match for you. You may choose multiple options.
There are other threads for that question. Perhaps you would feel more comfortable in one of those threads. Just a suggestion.

Added emphasis in quote mine.

So? Like I said, calling me white doesn't bother me. Calling someone black if they are black doesn't bother them.

Why do the Native Americans get to be bothered by this? Because someone told them they should. That's why. Pathetic attempt at a money grab.

So to you this is all about politics that you do not agree with?

Your question is irrelevant at best, a red herring at worst. I'm not Native American so my opinion doesn't matter. In fact, no non-Native-American's opinion matters.

That's really nonsense, in my view. We're talking about a team like the Washington Redskins, with a proud history and tradition that's a century old, and a bunch of bleeding heart busy-bodies want to stir up unrest at the altar of the politically correct gods who self-appoint themselves arbiters of offense. The fans of the Washington Redskins own that name, own that history and tradition, and they have just as much right to be offended by attempts to paint them all as racists as some **** disturber who's got nothing better to do with their life and demands change.

Never happen. It would be reduced to "Saltines" in short order.

That would be alright...we would still KNOW...and the chants would still be the same. "Lets go, cracka's!!!"

The Fighting Sioux simply because if you say it fast, you will end up saying the fighting sucks. Which would be correct, fighting does suck, but it makes no sense to name yourself like that.
It's not offensive, it's just a stupid name.

How do you get fighting sucks from fighting Sioux, pronounced "sue"?

My younger sister teaches school. I visited her in school one day two years ago, and as I walked down the hall, I stopped outside a class room in which a young teacher was instructing her class on the history of the "Si -ox" indians. It took me a second to realize what in the hell she was talking about. God help our children.

This is what I was going to say -- it doesn't matter if we find it offensive. It's what they find offensive that matters.

Personally I don't see why any of it would be considered offensive. They've been called "red men" for as long as I've been alive, and only recently, in this "touchy, feely, everybody gets a trophy" world did they seem to become vocal over it. Could be a case of, "How dare those white devils call you this? You should be upset!!" 50 to 1, it started out with a lawyer.

It is a case of "life has become too easy and they have nothing better to do"

because its an obvious reference to skin color and the defining nature of skin color.

MY response to that is SO!

Why is it forbidden to make any reference to skin color?

It would have to be a hockey team.

I think the OP is trying to see who here have fallen for the PC crap and who haven't.

Since moving to Mexico I am amazed at how they change the pronunciation of words.

I figure I will go with how the owner of the name or the person calls themselves.

For example they sell Chevrolet's here. That is let at the end and not lay like the French say it.

When it is used as the defining factor or as one of the defining factors - it is not acceptable.

Defining factor of what? It is a team name, and a proud one at that.

Where did this rule come from?

I have no doubt that in Mexico they indeed are Chevro-"lets". Around here we just call them "bombs". We also call chevy trucks "tuna boats".

We live in a society where one should be defined by their accomplishment, by their actions, by their character and not by the color of their skin.

That may be but that has nothing to do with a team name.

Why is skin color more important than any other physical trait someone has?

Here's my own little poll ...
In context ...Does anyone NOT find any of these offensive?
