Which of these ongoing potential problems is worse and more likely?

Threat #1

Conventional conflict over Ukraine with NATO and US, possibly escalating to nuclear war with Russia..

-- Russia says they're trying to support a truce in Ukraine, but by announcing new sanctions that are expected to be formally approved on Monday, the EU's leadership "is practically sending a signal of direct support to the 'party of war' in Kiev.

Britain said on Friday it could contribute 3,500 troops to a NATO rapid response force defending against new threats like the Ukraine crisis. The rapid reaction force is meant to reassure former Soviet satellites such as Poland and the Baltic states that fear an emboldened Russia will turn its sights on them. --

Threat #2

ISIS attacks on US soil with devastating results, possibly even knocking out the power grid, crippling the US for months..

--
When Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned last month that the Islamic State (IS) is an “imminent” threat to the United States, a number of lawmakers and analysts seized upon that claim.

“This is really the first group that has the wherewithal in terms of financing” to potentially strike on US soil, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee. IS, also called ISIS and ISIL, has “heavy equipment, heavy explosives, the ability to move quickly.”

Indeed, many have argued that IS now represents a far greater prospect of peril to US interests than Al Qaeda does. --

Threat #3

Ebola virus spreading slowly thru the US, possibly becoming more infectious thru mutation.
Z-mapp and other inoculations either can't be manufactured fast enough or lose effectiveness..

-- Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Ebola outbreak, which has killed 2,100 people in African five countries, was unlikely to spread to the United States in the short term.

But he added there could be implications if Washington and other powers did not send urgently needed equipment, public health workers and other supplies to the region.

"If we don't make that effort now, and this spreads not just through Africa but other parts of the world, there's the prospect then that the virus mutates. It becomes more easily transmittable," he said in the interview broadcast on Sunday.

"And then it could be a serious danger to the United States," he added. --

Cheeses, I voted first!

Since it is a public poll I have to declare that I voted amongst the most likely threat out of the three contained threats. Russia is an old bully nearest to me in Europe. No ebolla virus deaths around here. While ISIS is pretty much contained also.

I dunno Grip. Asking whether you want to die by beheading, terrible disease, or go up in a nuclear cloud is a little pessimistic coming right out of the gate. I realize that's not what you're asking, per se, but still....

I'll say realistically, we'll probably contain ALL three, but there's a chance something could spiral. I didn't create these situations, nor do I cry "the sky is falling", only offer debate.

None of the above, the real threat is America's obsession with threats.

When I see assault rifles when I drive across an arbitrary line in the sand to visit close friends, I wonder what America is afraid of. Canada has been your best friend since after the civil war, has never harmed anyone, provides you oil and gas below market value, our sons and daughters fought and died in your war on terror....and you station heavily armed and armored police at the "Peace Arch" border crossing to what, keep out dangerous maple syrup?

You have roving bands of survivalists "patrolling" the "longest undefended border in the world" with assault rifles, .50 caliber sniper rifles who say they are there to prevent "mongrels" from entering.

The United States has twice invaded my country, twice repelled, while the worst we have done to you is export several billion dollars worth of high grade pot, which, from the sounds of things must have been a huge mistake....pot induces paranoia according the US Justice department.

Thx for changing the order from the title.

I, instinctively, suspected something was out of order with my OP but I couldn't see it, thanks. :)

I've been suspicious of the Canadians slowly poisoning us with arsenic laced Maple Syrup for decades. It's just like those french speaking canucks to get us with a smile. Ooops,, I'm half French Canadian, with most my living relatives there. I better call them and say 'Eh, you hosers, call the PM and stop this sabotage!" j/k

I think the real border threat is farther south. But, I agree somewhat that we don't ever see the real threats before they happen. That's life though, it's very unpredictable. We'll probably be so worried about all the world's problems that we won't be aware of the asteroid coming.

Actually, you have exposed a rather nasty regime based strategy to take over the United States without violence. It has been planned since we defeated the US in 1812. It is a two pronged attack.

1) Our maple syrup must be 100% maple or it cannot be labelled maple syrup. Through that, we are developing a sugar dependency [we ship cheap wheat so you buy a lot of pancakes] which, when we shut it off, will make everyone very anxious...

2) We have not so secretly developed the most potent marijuana in the known universe and have been 'dumping' [selling below local prices] to disguise the above sugar dependency, which when removed along with sugar, will make everyone really, really chippy.

That is when we will strike, demand control of the United States and it's foreign missions, and we will restore maple syrup and pot. And with our natural relationship with Cuba, you will have no choice. Because we have always been a peaceful country, the world will easily accept our terms for global domination.

This is a vast conspiracy only I know about so don't tell anyone.

Oh, btw, the first thing we will do is convert to driving on the left hand side of the road, but because we are polite and never want to offend anyone, we will phase this change in, cars the first year, trucks and buses the second

Kill us with kindness, how truly evil. Get us high on some good bud, then take away the sugar? Ahhhh,, you've gone too far, we'll have to declare jihad and steal all your oil now. I see a conspiracy brewing between Canada and Arab forces.

The world almost seems this crazy to me. The News Media is going to create another YK2 joke for everyone to laugh at.

No Arab forces involved. This is strictly a Canada/Cuba thing.

Yes, the world does get that crazy. In my time as a journalist I have heard worse, like how Canada really is befriending Cuba to undermine the US, and our acceptance of draft dodgers in the Vietnam war was communist sympathizing, that your draft dodgers were being subjected to mind control experiments, and the big one, still around at times, the 911 terrorists came from Canada.

With all that and the machine guns at the border, is there any reason we have become the US major supplier of Comedians?

Cuba is an old side note, where we lost access to a good culture, cuisine and cigars. It was one of our many earlier screw-up's and hasn't been well written about since Hunter Thompson. The worst thing youz guys did was allow 'gay marriage' before us. That's simply not fair...lol

Canada has always produced better weed, actors and comedians, since Northern Lights, Richard Dean Anderson and Howie Mandel crossed the border. Thank goodness the world isn't predictable, how boring would that be?

One of my sneaky pleasure is vacationing in Cuba. It is among the friendliest of islands, clean and very reasonable and denied my American friends to whom I bring back gifts.....making envy all that much deeper.

You really have not denied yourselves Cuban cigars, merely created a cottage industry in Canada, hundreds of retail outlets within 100 miles of the US border catering to Americans. When I was in the computer industry we are always well served by the reps as we were located next door to such a facility; you would be surprised what can be accomplished with a $35 dollar investment that sells in the US for $200.

I wonder if the better actors and comedians is a result of the crazy weed, or in spite of it....if you watch enough Second City and SCTV you get kind of a clear picture....

Retiree's aren't aware that they could retire in a paradise level atmosphere for a 1/4-1/8 of the US costs for anything even close. I'm getting ideas here. The food is outrageous and quality of dance and entertainment. I'd love to smoke a genuine Habanos Cubano. Where's a slow boat?

I think the quality of Canadian entertainers comes from a freer society. It's structured and traditional, without being over bearing. That says a lot about the civility of Canadian culture.

You are obviously well informed of Canadian culture and tradition. People say we have no culture of our own, but have adopted American culture, which is true of media based culture.
ture, which is indeed both the image and identity of Canada. we are not a nation. we are an experiment in multiculturalism linking som
You have, I believe, put your finger on what IS Canadian cule 115 "nations" under one, semi-centrist federation. That is crucial to understanding what is Canada.

I have a dear friend who lives at the other end, 745i km [4630 mi] in St John's Newfoundland. He speaks an identified language different than my English or French, but we are brothers. If I were in need, or he of me, either would open their doors no questions asked. What Michael Moore got right was we don't lock our doors and health care is "settled"...

I theorize an extension of one philosophers thinking in that it has to do with our relationship with the native peoples. America went forth and conquered. Our settlers eased into a much more hostile land, in terms of teraine and climate, and learned to live native ways, both in need and respect. Our natives are a very welcoming people, it is in their DNA, it is a problem in poverty as one of a group may have a job, but is in need because he gives his income to his friends.
The "potlatch culture" was adopted by the French Voyaguers, Acadians [Cajuns], Scotts, Poles and Ukrainians who broke open the wilderness, much of which has yet to see the footprint of man.

I think that is a start on why Americans arm themselves and fear their neighbors and why we arm peacekeepers and support our neighbors

On this explanation, I wish we were more Canadian in our own structure of government. It's almost as if Canadians are being what we should've strived to be.

Though, Canadians are made up of a similar people originally , French-English-Indian (Mackinaw). One of the things I don't envy is the heavy calorie diet originated for warmth of meat and potatoes.

I do believe we have been tacitly learning from your mistakes, improving on the foundation of what the founding fathers saw. If you read about our own "fathers of Confederation" you will see much of the debate was avoiding US problems, you were recovering from a civil war.

I at one time, before we had a written constitution or a bill of rights, I envied America's laws and way of law making. It was routine that police could, under a "writ of assistance" search your home and car without ever thinking about a judge. But it served us when we gave the finger to Johnson on Vietnam as our Prime Minister simply had to say draft dodgers will be welcomed and protected; he in fact informed the immigration minister after the fact.

But, when you sit down and compare item for item our constitution and yours, our Charter of Rights and Freedoms against Jefferson's Bill of Rights, you see a clever bit of legal plagiarism, some tweaking for local customs, enshrining and defining rights more clearly based on US court rulings which stand as your "adjustments". You will notice what at first appears to be a disregard for the concept of "checks and balances", it horrifies any American when I tell them our Queen is our head of state, and nothing becomes law without her or her representative's signature. That would be if you overlooked the part about British common law traditions. And our tradition IS a check and balance as our Governor General is a largely ceremonial position and can be overruled by the courts, who by tradition keep their nose out of that arena unless a petitioner can argue there is "dire need"...

So, I suppose you could say what you admire we stole in the first place.

I do not know of a calorie heavy diet, unless you speak of our natives and northerners who live on fat fish and meat. We do have an obesity problem similar to yours in the cities because of fast fat foods. But we are addressing that one way by legislating labeling of sugars and fats as a health warning like cigarettes which can carry no b\rand name on the package, merely pictures of cancer cells and people dying. Mac Donald's lobbying doesn't work in our system as there is no vote trading.

In the settled regions what I have seen is we have a much healthier diet as we favor fresh as opposed to packaged. And through diet and our health care system we live on average three years longer than Americans.

Draft dodgers should've never had to escape to Canada, it was one of our more shameful endeavors. It's not that your gov't has a better system of laws but rather a more advantageous culture of following the 'spirit of the law', rather than just the letter of it.

Canada is our northern, sister nation, not far off in feature or nature. Should any other country dare to intrude upon your sovereignty, we would surely bring our full weight of measure against such an attack. And that my friend is the weight of almost the all mighty Himself.

I love my northern relatives, who are very much American in continent scope, as much as we ourselves, so look for no such differences.

I was only kidding about the diet thing. My relatives used to tell me about their love of meatloaf, roast beef, potatoes and gravy.

Threat #1, and other.

Russia has nukes available.

ISIS is less of an issue because they are busy in the mid east atm, and probably for quite awhile now. Granted they may try or succeed in attacking somewhere in the USA, but that is frankly less of an issue that whatever the **** putin is up to.

Ebola is currently not a threat, even if it does spread to the US. A few people will die, but it cannot spread if proper quarantine procedures are followed.
That is assuming it doesn't mutate into some superbug or whatever, but in current form....

The "other" I voted for was poor quality education of our children.

Because higher quality education improves our chances of preventing/avoiding everything else.

If that's how you feel, then President Carter should not have had granting them amnesty shoved up his ass during the 1980 election by the GOP .

ISIS and Russia.

Ebola, unless it mutates into a form more capable of massive spread instead of burning out quickly, probably isn't going to threaten major global or US pandemic.

ISIS, if allowed to continue their exponential growth, is going to be a big problem in the near future.

Russia.... well it is hard to say. There's potential for things to go sideways, but it should be avoidable.

Carter should've never have punished the 1980 US Olympic athletes for political reasons and not allowed them the ability to compete. I always thought that was asinine and unreasonable.

Ah, but then there is Quebec roast pork, Pea Soup..

You know what, one of my great prides is how our two nations have gotten over any differences. We have, since the civil war fought shoulder shoulder, in four nasty wars. And we do live with the security our other neighbor pays us deep respect because the full might of the United States; the Peace Arch here is engrave "children of a common mother" which kinds of tells it all. When we enter the international ice hockey arena, Americans cheer for use as loudly as we do them when either gets knocked out of contention. The United States is our most respected opponent on the ice, where everything counts in this country, as you have adopted our game jst as we have adopted your legal concepts.

We have risked Canadian lives to protect Americans in Tehran, opened our doors to stranded air travelers when you were attacked and were the first foreign boots on the ground in New York and any time there's a brush fire in California, our way of thanks for keeping the Russian Bear where she belongs.

And, oh yeah, we easily forgave your for those two invasions, well we did win anyway

But you were not talking about the 1980 Olympics in the post I quoted were you.
You were talking about how folks shouldn't have had to run to Canada, which even my Military Dad told me to go.

Instead, I played the cynical game as #32 in 1972's draft which never happened, and I knew it would never happen due to Nixon playing politics.
Not to mention that 1972 was also the first year there was no 2S college deferment--what a coincidence--NOT.

Now speak to me about President Carter being unfairly trashed by GOPs for granting amnesty--
something you would have supported based on your position that they shouldn't have had to run to Canada .
Carter should've never have punished the 1980 US Olympic athletes for political reasons and not allowed them the ability to compete. I always thought that was asinine and unreasonable.
