So here we are. Who agrees that a white man cannot teach cultural studies? And can a black man teach Latino and SoutheastAsian studies if a white man cannot teach black studies? Or has the world gone absolutely nuts?

Black community leaders in Fresno, Calif., are urging the Fresno Unified School District to re-evaluate the hiring of a white guy to
teach three cultural studies courses at a brand-new middleschool that will overwhelmingly serve minority students.

Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School — named after the city’s first blackprincipal — will open in a few short weeks. It’s the first middle school in the immediate, poverty-ridden vicinity since 1979.

The protesters are unhappy because the school has chosen to hire Peter Beck, aperson with white skin, over other, unidentified candidates, The Fresno Bee reports.

Beck will teach African-American studies, Latino studies and Southeast Asian studies. . . .

. . .“We’re just saying what the community wants,” said Rev. Karen Crozier, oneof the activists. “We didn’t fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies.”

Crozier, who appears to be a professor at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, also suggested that a white person cannot teach minority children in this instance because of racism. . . .

I saw the video of this woman and her supporters in LiveLeak yesterday. She was blatantly racist and I couldn't believe that she may actually get her way on this. They demanded special courses, which they were given, and now they demand that only certain races are qualified to teach them? As if white people are not qualified to teach?

Reverse the names of the races and see what would happen.

It does certainly seem racist to me, but i'm white, so I might be biased on this issue.

I don't think your race makes you any more biased than anybody else's race makes them biased. We choose our biases. It isn't something we're born with. :)

Clearly the professor with "white skin" is a racist. If you disagree with the black people that don't want him, YOU are a racist. Heck if you are white you are racist.

It IS racist. Even by "institutionalized racism" arguments. Here you have black leaders who are in positions of authority demanding that a white person be replaced....because he's white. I'd LOVE to see the apologists try and argue past this one.

Jesus. WTH can people not learn to see past skin color?

That occurred to me too. If white parents had objected to a black man teaching cultural studies to THEIR kids, I'm pretty sure that would have made the front page headlines across the nation.

BTW, you messed up on the poll. Its not multiple choice like your poll title says. I chose "Race is not a factor on a person's competency to teach anything" since that is more important imo.

WTF ???
Whatever happened to the 3Rs????

Wonder what would happen if white parents got into a tizzy over a black European history teacher.

Yeah, the racism here seems fairly apparent, and it's not on the part of the school. I would urge these parents to listen to the words of one of their (rightfully) favorite historical figures, Dr. Martin Luther King, which if I recall, went something to the effect of not judging a person based on the color of their skin, but the content of their character.

If white people are inherently unfit to be part of understanding other cultures by virtue of their skin color, then I don't understand how exactly we will ever reach a point of acceptance as a country. They have concluded that anyone born with skin lighter than coffee is simply intellectually incapable of that.

Gee, where have I heard stuff like that before...

Race is not a factor on a person's competency to teach anything, pretty much says it all.

She is accusing someone she doesn't even know of being racist while being racist towards him. Unbelievable.

I don't know the "institutionalized racism" argument, but I'll attempt to shed some light.

Minorities cannot be racist against the majority because there are not societal impacts of their racial bigotry regarding systemic injustice/privilege at the social scale in question (national or global). As racism is a social construct, it can only be defined by social factors.

Now, regarding your incorrect context. You see, the white person can move and no longer be the subject of racial bigotry. A black person cannot move away from racial bigotry present throughout society. Since a white person can move to escape, and a black person cannot, these are not the same situations. Thus, the context to be examined in determining systemic injustice/privilege is that of national or global.

Any view of an individual or group that is primarily concerned with the color of their skin is racist on its face. It doesn't matter if the people involved are black, white, yellow or blue, it's still racist.

And your poll isn't multiple choice, I thought you should know.

Jesus. WTH can people not learn to see past skin color?

I agree he should teach.

I agree that a gay person teaching sunday school...or an atheist. All bias should end.

One need not believe the subject matter to teach the subject matter.

Yeah this is kind of ridiculous.

While I do think on a macro scale, african people are better suited to toward teaching african culture, south asian people toward south asian culture etc, on an individual scale there is no bearing here. If that guy was hired on merit alone (and I don't see anything suggesting he wasn't) then nobody should have a quarrel with it.

Did you even read those articles? They range from the utterly absurd to being so heavily qualified that the results are essentially meaningless. Also those with an agenda to PROVE racism among white people are most likely quite capable of making what appears to be a scientific study produce that very result.

Or you can go with us who have actually raised kids and watched them play with children of other races. You get a much clearer perspective that way.

Absolutely. This story is the very definition of racist. Concerning, to say the least. This is unacceptable.

I'd love to see Al Sharpton defend this.

Just proved you wrong.

From your first link :
Both studies concluded that further research needs to be done.

Third link has nothing to do with race. Fourth link is about test taking and studies about better access to better preschool and kindergarden for minority neighborhoods ( most districts don't bus at that age). Fifth link is about one university and cannot be held as a basis of a regular happening.

The second link probably has the best argument, however again that is just one district. You cannot say all white teachers are not qualified to teach minorities or cultural studies based on that instance.

WTF ???
Whatever happened to the 3Rs????

Oh, they get around to those if there is any time left over after the indoctrination.

That does beg another question though as to whether cultural studies in themselves are racist. In my opinion they generally promote and encourage racism far more than they educate people. Cultural studies should be seamlessly integrated into the whole of American and world history which is how a whole lot of us learned about that. And I frankly have no worries about whether it is somebody who is black or white or Asian or Hispanic or American Indian who teaches the course if they are properly qualified to teach it. But these days I understand that American history is no longer part of the core curriculum in many schools? But cultural studies is.
