Gang infested East LA is a paradise compared to a developing world slum.

I have been to both and I am comparing the violence and potential harm to the child. It is not completely comparable but many in hard hit impoverished areas with gangs in the US or trailer parks have it every bit as bad. My comparison is accurate.

Your comparison is garbage. People in East LA do not starve to death, they have access to medical care, they have electricity and sewage systems (not open gutters running in the dirt streets), they have schools, they have shelter without a leaking tin roof, they have social services. There are countless ways developing world slums are far worse than any slum in the US.

Ridiculous. I have been to student houses with rotting black mold, leaky roofs, gang family members, no electricity, leaky roofs, rats, garbage smeared on the floors, holes in the floors, houses filled with junk so kids have to sleep on the floors, etc. I am talking about people living in terrible conditions and East LA was but one example. Perhaps I have seen things or aware of things that you are not.

You have some never equating the two situations. Disgusting intellectual dishonesty.

I am equating the potential to harm for a child. I accept reality. I have experience. I have understanding. Get a grip. gain some experience. It will help with your perspective.

In a developing world slum, there is only harm for the child and unending despair. To compare it to anything in the West is gross dishonesty.

Here is a story about Portland, Oregon mayor Charlie Hales:

PORTLAND – Portland Mayor Charlie Hales personally backed Gov. Kitzhaber’s position on welcoming refugee children to the state Wednesday.

Last week, Oregon took in 50 immigrant kids who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, supporting them as they await legal proceedings.

Kitzhaber said he welcomed the children with open arms. Senator Jeff Merkley also supported the governor's position.

On Wednesday, Hales weighed in.

“Immigration is a federal issue. The City of Portland has no official position on this topic,” he said. “But I’m not just a mayor. I’m a father. And speaking as a father, I stand with Gov. John Kitzhaber and welcome these refugee children to Oregon.”

Hales said that turning away the kids wouldn’t align with the spirit of Portland or Oregon.

“Oregon has been a welcoming home to unaccompanied minors and refugee children, and will continue to be so while we wait on Congress to adopt more responsible immigration policies," Hales said.
More than 200 kids have been taken to Washington state. California has seen over 3,000.
The issue has sparked Portland rallies from both sides of the debate.

Hales: ‘I welcome refugee children to Oregon’

refugees?.. sure thing.

unfortunately, the kids in question aren't refugees, though

the term "refugee" has a legal definition....these kids don't qualify, no matter what your position on the matter is.

I am not a lawyer, apparently you are. All I know is they are kids and they should not be treated as criminals. What conditions make them not to be refugees? Skin color? Language? what???

Suprise surprise. I wondered how long it would be before someone tried to make this about racism rather than debate the actual issue. Actually figured it would have happened sooner.

I'm not a lawyer either, I just know how to read.

persecution is the key here... if the kids are NOT being persecuted because of their race, nationality, religion, or association with social groups, or political beliefs... they aren't refugees.

that's the basics of the 1967 protocol ( the standards which we abide by)

in addition , refugee status is something that is conferred on a person after they have applied for it based upon those criteria...it is not a status a mayor, governor, or a journalist can magically bestow on anyone.

Obviously wrong on that account and now this account. You lack experience I see and would rather cast ignorant insults instead...

Prince Charles, who recently visited India for the Commonwealth Games, says in a new book that Dharavi in Mumbai -- one of the world's largest slums -- is a model of sustainable living that British towns could follow. Britain, he writes in his latest book, 'Harmony', could learn lessons from the way people live their lives in Dharavi.

Because they are, by definition, not refugees. This is according to the United States governments and the United Nations own definitions.

Yeah, sure.

Britain, he writes in his latest book, 'Harmony', could learn lessons from the way people live their lives in Dharavi.

Therein lies the dishonesty of your disgusting presentation.

Yeah, sure.

Therein lies the dishonesty of your disgusting presentation.

That is all Prince Charles... write him about your thoughts. He cares.

... yeah. It sure is obvious because nobody that has been to or experienced poverty hell holes that I have seen would dare utter the garbage that you are. It is embarrassing for you and disrespectful to the children that live in those conditions and sometimes die as a result of those conditions. Just keep chillin' in sunny Florida waiting for the next Spring Break party though and let those of us that know what is up deal with reality.
