Of the cities listed, I would not want to live in Detroit. Chicago is really nice in areas and a war zone in others. The winters would keep me from wanted to live there if I disregard things like proximity to family.

If I could live in any city listed, provided if came with a decent income I'd pick Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles or New York and maybe DC; lots of great cultural and entertainment options. I learned a while back most places are nice if you have a lot of money.

a day in the bleachers at Wrigley watching the Cardinals makes up for a lot of the bad

Chicago is much better than some....but the gang wars are definitely causing some issues

They always have..

Well for better or worse money makes the world go round. Always has, always will it seems.

Anyone who votes for Chicago is either a partisan hack or doesn't travel much. Personally I would be torn between Detroit and Memphis... Chicago is a wonderful city and nobody would care about it if it were not for the Obama Derangement Syndrome some have.

Memphis is not a completely failed city like Detroit is though. Memphis certainly has its problems, but it is a nice city to visit. Midtown Memphis is great (at least it was when I lived there in the late nineties, it may have gone downhill since then). On the other hand, Detroit as they say is "Like God took a dump on a parking lot".

I absolutely love Memphis, but again - I've only been in a bad area once. I was on Elvis Presley Boulevard, and the farther down you go, the more narrow it gets, and the worse the area gets. Once it turned into a two-lane, there were cars parked on the side of the road, and people sitting outside on the hoods talking, laughing, playing loud music. Off the street I was on, we heard a gunshot come from a hotel, and we got out of there pretty quickly. Found out later that someone had died in that hotel from that gunshot.

But I just stay out of the bad areas. Easy, peasy. I go to Beale Street, or Graceland, or wherever, and we have no problems. Amazing music, amazing BBQ. I love me some Memphis.

This poll isn't overtly political but I didn't see a place to post polls in the non political section.

Anyway which of these is the worst US city in terms of crime, economy, housing, general livability etc etc etc

Basically which city should be known as America's toilet?

of the ones you named-Detroit. crime ridden and dying, it has seen several leaders sent to prison. Chicago is full of corrupt scumbags of both parties (Dems of course have more since its a Dem hotbed) but Chicago actually has some reasons why people go there. One of my nieces is an actress who chose Chicago over NYC.

I cannot see anyone choosing Detroit

Midtown is nice too, particularly the Cooper and Young area and around Overton Park. When I lived there the really rough areas were up Danny Thomas in North Memphis. South Memphis is pretty rough too. Downtown, Midtown, and East Memphis is mostly nice.

Beyond a doubt...Washington D.C...for obvious reasons.

Detroit, easily.

Detroit, easily.

agreed. I can see visiting DC, Chicago, Memphis, etc.

unless I was testing body armor or some new anti riot weapon, I can not see any reason to go to detroit

years ago there was a sports event in cobo hall that I wanted to attend. Just before I left, my late father handed me a box and said "take this" If you have to use it, I will have an attorney there in a heartbeat.

it was his 45. some guys thought my car was something they wanted. I said-you wanna get shot? I suspect they knew I meant it They bugged off. worked out best for everyone.

Chicago is a great city. Like any city there are some pretty rough areas, but there is plenty of the city that perfectly safe and awesome. We have a great and diverse restaurant scene. Plenty of local theater and comedy. If your into architecture, Chicago has tons to see. The view from the lakefront is really breath taking. The Chicago Art Institute is one of the finest art museums you'll see. The local sports teams are passionately followed, even if they're not always successful. If you like to go out and have a good time, I can't think of a better neighborhood to party in that Wrigleyville, especially if you pick a night when the Cubs win.

Yes, our local politicians are horrible. But that's true for the state as a whole. We got three living ex-governors who are convicted felons. And I can't tell you how many city officials and suburban officials have been found guilty of corruption - or are obviously corrupt but somehow still on the job. But still doesn't change the fact that Chicago is a world class city.

Random video. The last two "stay cool" and "I just got a promotion"

I would say Detroit, but DC is responsible for our 17 trillion debt, along with countless other problems facing our nation today. Detroit might be one of the worst cities to live in, but when **** hits the fan in Washington, we all feel the splatter.

Camden, New Jersey. The crime rate is out of control, and the city has absolutely no positive, redeeming qualities. Newark at least is closely placed to NYC.

I agree, but Camden is right across the river from Philly, so that is not the reason.. Camden never recovered from the riots back in the 60s and went from bad to worst in crime, living conditions

Pretty sure the poll is talking violent crime, not what is going on in our government.

All it said was worst. If it was just a measure of violent crime, the poll would be unnecessary.

My point was that DC has nationwide collateral damage, unlike any of the other cities.

Washington, DC has more prostitution and immorality, and has adversely affected my life more than any other.

When I was younger I moved to a city I couldn't stand. I thought the place horrible but sometimes life throws you a curve. Despite the fact I thought it was the most horrible place I'd ever live, a lot of people I'd met loved it and couldn't figure out why I couldn't see what they saw. Then it dawned on me, I was struggling financially after the move.

It's amazing the impact financial stress and difficulty can have on our lives. Don't they say that by far the number one thing married couples fight over is money?

Being middle class in this country means constantly being stressed out over your finances. Some people make much better decisions than others and some are better equipped to deal with the stress but I think most people, regardless of their political leanings, would agree that the middle class is getting screwed a million and one different ways.

 That's OK. I'll get my own. I'd rather do that, than have you tell me it's Obama's fault that the onions are so expensive.
Its Obama's fault there isnt an artisinal bakeshop in your area... :2razz:

Los Angles is on the way to bankruptcy; so is San Francisco. 6 California cities have already gone bankrupt, the largest being Santa Barbara, I think.

Birmingham, AL went bankrupt; Detroit of course.

California, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York are all states that are heading toward ruin.

California has implemented, or is implementing, a "public retirement" program for people who do not have 401K's thru their work - it is simply a scheme to steal money from the lowest classes of society for the purpose of keeping the public worker pension system from collapsing - but, of course, the masses are completely ignorant of the fact that they are being ripped off.

That system will go national eventually - and when that can't save all the sinking ships, they will begin calling for FedGov bailouts; which means that even if you live in a responsible state - the parasites will eventually get into your wallet.

The one thing all of these places have in common is that they are hardcore democratic strongholds. Disgusting thieves who deserve their comeuppance.
