Re: Who has been our greatest President?

And so is a Republican liking Grover Cleveland, who was vilified by the GOP during his time.
The only Dem to be elected between Lincoln and Wilson, and lost in 1888 even though he won the popular vote.
"Strong" is relative.
Seems Dems are 0 for 4 when the Electoral college winner loses the popular vote .

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

I'm going with Abe. Even though he did a few things differently than I would have done. He still managed to sail the ship through some rough waters.

Next is George Washington, followed by FDR.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

JFK created the peace corps. a well executed, novel idea
he stared down kruschev, who was trying to see if he could make kennedy his bitch, both in berlin and in cuba
but most impressively, he had the vision to launch the space program with a very ambitious goal and even more ambitious time line

i will defy anyone to point to a subsequent presidential vision that was as massive and/or as successful

changing gears, i do not see where anyone has pointed to FDR's authorization of a nuclear weaponry program as being as significant and world changing as it actually was

On FDR, it could be because it was Truman who actually used the bomb. But it is FDR that is considered on of our three greatest presidents, not Truman although most Historians put good old Harry into the near great category along with Jefferson, TR, Jackson and IKE.

On JFK, I always place him second on the list of best presidents I have experienced in my lifetime, IKE being number one. Although I was born, I do not personally remember Truman so I always start off with Eisenhower.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

did you know that Lincoln stated in 1854 state secession was legal.

and of coarse it is, according to the founders at the constitutional convention, may 30, 1787

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

I've seen righties constantly try to champion Truman, JFK and even Clinton as "good" Dems when they play their "divide" card.
But I rarely see Dems on here say any of GOP critters are "good".
Now for me, I would choose Lincoln, TR and IKE as "good" GOPs.

As for the original Dems before people could vote, they're ours--Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.
The GOPs can have both Adams.
But I'll take Sam Adams--blonde if you will .

I really dislike it when one, anyone tries to place a past president into one of the parties today. Today's political parties are so different from the Republicans and Democrats of the 1950's and 60's let alone in the 19th century. I do not think IKE, JFK or even Goldwater would recognize the parties of today as the parties they belonged to back then. I personally think both IKE and JFK would be horrified to see what their political parties evolved into. But that is just my opinion.

the popular vote, a horrible thing for electing the president.

electoral college, electors chosen by district, or state wide by the people....that's the way to go.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

That is because you see people as incapable, requiring the support if thier betters (which you presume to be a part of). You cannot accept that failure in life can and should occur and feel guilt at your own success.

No, that is your opinion and not based in reality. It is not your place to tell me what I think. What I see is that none of us live in a vacuum. We are all affected by those around us and none of us can manage everything ourselves. We all need infrastructure to assist us. Much of what FDR did was create a more effective infrastructure and acknowledge that none of us live in a vacuum.

The end game of progressives is a small elite group guiding the unwashed masses to makee "good choices" They are unable to do on thier own

Actually, this is the end game of conservatives. A small elite group dictating to others and rigging the game so that others will remain outside the elite.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

I'd have to say the best ever was Calvin Coolidge. He was one of the very few presidents who wasn't an egotistical, narcissistic, power hungry megalomaniac. He also did far more than any other president in history to limit the power of the federal government and prevent it from intruding in the lives of the citizens.

He was probably one of the worst. His policies led to the Great Depression... vetoing farming subsidies and lack of market regulation for example. His only positive was undoing the damage caused by the Harding scandals.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

socialists and other losers want a big nanny state government to give them the property of others. They want a big federal government because if individual statess tried to engage in too much soak the rich nonsense, said states would go bankrupt. The country would have been far better off if FDR had died shortly after taking office or have been defeated in 36.

Libertarians and other losers want a tiny government so they can rape the general population as much as possible, eliminating as many regulations as possible so that others, the country, the environment, and pretty much everything can be destroyed as long as they get "theirs". They want as small a federal government as possible because it is far easier for them to control and corrupt the smaller state governments so they can soak everyone except their own little elite group. Thank goodness that FDR was elected and made sure none of this occurred.

Do you see how ridiculous your silly hyperbole sounds, turtle?

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

sorry... that is not true WWII lifted America out of the depression.

America was not even prepared for war when it came.

FDR was President during the period. He presided over the climb out of the Depression and over the triumph over fascism.

Good luck with those mental illness issues.

What are you talking about...."mental illness issues"? That makes no sense.

The fact is that FDR is consistently listed as a GREAT PRESIDENT in survey after survey after survey of experts in the areas of politics and history over the last sixty years. And that happens even when conservatives and libertarians hand pick their own panels. And the reason for it is the successful end to the Depression and the triumph over fascism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States

This is the most comprehensive chart of surveys on the matter I have ever come across. It demonstrates clearly beyond any doubt that the experts select FDR over and over and over again as a GREAT PRESIDENT no matter who selects them and that includes the libertarian leaning Federalist Society.

delusional is to think that we needed the remedies FDR foisted on us. He also hung Pearl Harbor out to dry

Pearl Harbor!?!?!?!? Should comments like that better belong in the questionable CONSPIRACY section of the board right along with the refuted nonsense about the Supreme Court?

Funny, cinservative policy is to push for personal excellence nit endless government assisstence. I thin, you are far more enamored with intent then results.

And then there are the practical pragmatists who see America as a place where people can pursue personal excellence as well as having a just society that sees people as more than just fodder for the machine.
