America has more Mestizos than African Americans now yet one would never know this through American media. You will never hear the word Mestizo in the US. Ever. This is even more odd when you start to realize that A 2012 study published by the Journal of Human Genetics found that the majority of the current Mexican population (~93%) is mixed race to some degree, counting the Mexican population of the US.

Why is this? Why do we constantly read about black and white America in our media but never mestizo America?

Is this intentional? Is this cultural? Is this sociocultural conspiracy? The media? Is this lack of care about said Mestizo population compared to the black, white populations? Is this simply that Mestizos are thrown into a black, white categorization based on their skin color and that's why? Do Americans just not focus on Mestizos enough to care to even acknowledge their existence? Is it simply that Mestizos haven't built up the clout yet of black America?

I find this "erasing" of Mestizos from all facets of American conscious fascinating either way. I mean really, you never hear "A Mestizo man, a black man and a white man were arrested today." Why not?

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

I think it's cause we normally call them Mexicans.... or whatever nationality they belong to really....

Why should anyone waste their time on an issue that doesn't exist?

Fill us in.

BTW: You need about a hundred more choices in your poll.

Well, if your question actually made sense, I would begin to fill you in..

What are you asking? Are you claiming mestizos don't represent well over 40 million people in the US currently?

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

How about when white people (Like Rep. Boehner.) think that they're brown, when they're actually orange?

Yes but "Mexicans" are not a racial group. They are a nationality. You can be African and be Mexican.. You can be 100% racially European and be Mexican.. It's a nationality..

What about when black people pretend to be related to illegal aliens like this crazy bitch?

Yes but "Mexicans" are not a racial group.

Neither is mestizo. Your own sources make it distinctly important to point out that mestizo is a caste amalgamated from the mixture of European and Native American.

They are a nationality. You can be African and be Mexican..

That's the gist of it though isn't it? Mexicans/Nicaraguans/Salvadoreans etc. in the US aren't arguing for their rights based on them being white, NA or black. They argue for their rights based on the claim that their mistreatment stems from them being Mexicans/Nicaraguans/Salvadoreans etc. ;)

Checkmate?

I wish we would admit that Whites are Blacks with a epidermal or/dermal deficiency.

If that's her thang, let her do what she wants to do.

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

Because we call them Hispanic. It's really not that complicated... You'll hear "a Hispanic man was arrested today," on the news just as much as white or black.

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

Mestizo is just a term for someone of mixed European and native American ancestry. It is the term used in Mexico, where most of the mestizos in the US came from.

Of course, Mexico also has blacks, black and white mixed race people, black and Asian, Europeans from a variety of nations, so "Mexican" is not a race either, and neither is "Hispanic."

And we don't need another racial or ethnic term. We are Americans. All of the citizens of this great land are Americans, regardless of where their ancestors came from. It's time we quit labeling people according to their perceived race/ethnicity/culture/ancestry.

For one thing, I don't know what a "Mestizos" even is....

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

Interesting video. I sometimes call them Mestizo but it feels vaguely insulting, like a scientific classification that is impersonal and unfriendly.

Ever hear of La Raza?

I'm trying to come up with a reason why I should care about any of this. So far I've failed.

I live in Texas, where there are many Mexicans, and I lived in Chile for a couple years so I have a bit of background knowledge.

First, I've never heard the word "mestizo" used by any hispanic person ever. The word is "hispanic" when describing ethnicity, and "latino" when describing culture.

Second, latin americans ARE white. It's not that they want to be considered white, it's not that anyone is oppressing anyone, they ARE WHITE.

Hispanic is not a race or a people though. It's a cultural heritage. There is no "Hispanic race". Not just that but as the study points out, most people who identify as Hispanic in the US are in fact mixed race with native Americans, so they are not "Spanish" as they would suggest by saying they're "hispanic". They are Mestizo race.

There is no more mestizo race than there is an Italian race or an Irish race.

It's white.

What you suggest is just another arbitrary grouping, like "White" or "Black"

It's not an improvement.

Re: Will America ever acknowledge Mestizos or continue to push the White/Black dichot

Mestizo race simply indicates a person is mixed race.

I don't think you understand the difference between race and nationality and or cultural heritage. Cultural heritage and nationality are political and cultural things, they are not actual biological constructs such as being of the European, Amerindian or Chinese race or mixed between two races (such as Mestizo).

White also means nothing. You're either European, mixed race, Amerindian and or another race or mix of races. "White" is merely a skin complexion, not a race.

This video is a very poor argument. They are called Mexicans or Hispanic. I hear those terms all the time and if the census, or whatever that video is about doesn't use those terms, then it means that it is not reflective of the way that society actually is.

Caucasian is a race, and Latin Americans are overwhelmingly caucasian.

Mestizo is not a race, anymore than mulatto is a race.

That makes the video even worse of an argument. The guy is trying to show that Hispanics don't have a race listed when one of the races listed, according to you (white), isn't even a race?
