Mestizo is actually pretty common here in Mexico. It references people born out of Spanish-Native American marriages/mixes.
I live in Texas, where there are many Mexicans, and I lived in Chile for a couple years so I have a bit of background knowledge.
First, I've never heard the word "mestizo" used by any hispanic person ever. The word is "hispanic" when describing ethnicity, and "latino" when describing culture.
Second, latin americans ARE white. It's not that they want to be considered white, it's not that anyone is oppressing anyone, they ARE WHITE.
