Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment [W:59]

Is this Child cruelty or just good discipline?

I have 3. Would I make my kid carry a stone in the middle of the night? Probably not. Have I "punished" my kids? Yes. Have I handed out punishments that others would consider "cruel"? No doubt. Are my kids all alive and well today? Yep.

You think 16 years old is too early to teach responsibility?

Before you say younever said that, your comment was he was a kid and not an adult.

16 years old is hardly a kid.

Was there any permanent damage to this "kid" from this?

I do not like disciplining children with military methods. I prefer modeling police methods such as locking them on the room mimics being locked in the jail. Should they continue breaking laws, be it home or societal, they get the same treatment.

There has been a lot of debate over this punishment of the "kid".

It seems the kid was wasting his time with video games and refused to do anything else.

The father was trying to teach his son a lesson.

Now with that said, the punishment had to be so bad that the kid would never think of wanting to go through it again. That is the only way to get a teenager to do what needs to be done. Does a teenager really care if you take away his video games when he knows you will give them right back? Of course not.

What do lazy people do in life? Nothing.

The father was trying to help his son long term and I applaude him for it.

I hope the "kid" was Smart enough to learn something from it, but I doubt it as the pólice charge validated his thought that is was unwarranted and it can never happen again, so it was a waste of time and energy.

would that be physical punishment or taking away activities your children liked to do?

i'm 50 years old and i got spanked on the rare occasion as a kid(not as a 16 year old) for misbahaving.

In the news last night was a pair of kids found in an abandoned motorhome, toilet not working and overflowing with filth, no food for days and no water, kids scarred and flea-bitten, parents were out getting high. THAT is child cruelty. Making your kid do some physical activities because his life is going sedentary, not so much.

don't you think the father should be mentoring his son instead of this kind of physical punishment?

I don't think a few nights with 3 am wakings is going to harm his development.

As for the punishment itself, I don't see anything criminal. Its harsh and may or not have been called for. I would assume/hope this was for a chronic problem where other more traditional methods of discipline had failed. Its possible it could be for a first time infraction (the article doesn't seem to say one way or another) in which case the dad is an overreacting jerk, but still not abusive. At least in this instance.

You mean like be his friend instead of making him a productive human being?

Yup. That's why I said that cruelty should be reserved for real cruelty, which is exactly what you described.

What do you do when a 16 year old refuses to take care of his responsibilities? Talking to him doesn't work. Being his friend is a récipe for disaster.

What would you suggest?

you sit down with him, try and figure out what the problem is and you don't stop until you do mason.

Depends upon the kid. Again, the parents generally know when the routine is losing it's effectiveness.

You can still have kids at 50. My father was 50 when I was born.

firm parenting at an early age helps when the children are older.

the means this father is using in trying to correct his son's behavior is bad given the age of his son. i think the kid is going to resent it as an adult and just think what he might do as a father himself.
