AC is the single biggest energy user in your home per KWH. Just a small room AC unit uses 1000 watts while a central air system uses between 2000 and 5000 watts. This huge energy consumption is for nothing but comfort and would be very easy to cut out of your life if you really think we are warming the planet with our energy use. When I was a kid AC was very rare and nearly all homes and businesses used fans and opened windows. On really hot days in school we would hold class outside under a shade tree. Anyway I have to wonder how many people in here crying about melting ice and rising sea levels use AC.

EDIT: gredy means greedy and mmade means made:lol: My key board is fookin up. ASUS sucks!

Well that's a good point. My sister who's now 62 and her husband finally broke down and installed central AC a year ago after 40 years of marriage. Growing up I had one of those small above ground pools - no AC. Though I must admit I do like AC and would not trade it in ... but then again, I have no problem with the amount of energy needed and I try not to abuse it and use it only on the hottest muggiest of days. Frankly, the ice sheets can melt and the oceans rise since if, today, every American stopped driving a car, stopped using AC, stopped using Jets to fly, stopped burning coal, wood and otherwise cut their carbon emissions by 90% across the board, India, China and the rest of the world would continue to make up the difference and continue increasing carbon emissions as would other emerging countries. If NJ gets too hot, I'll emigrate to Nova Scotia or move to northern Maine, which I hear is beautiful, less crowded and real estate is quite reasonable.

I try to use it only when necessary, I too like my open windows. However, I feel like you generalize the entire AGW crowd, do you even know what they advocate?

The AGW crowd says we are warming the planet by using fossil fuel so I have to wonder how many of them take any effort at all to lower their use of fossil fuel and practice what they preach. I have to wonder how many take any personal responsibility instead of blaming others. I have to wonder what percentage of them are not complete whinny ass hypocrites.

It's like the drilling (fracking) for natural gas is damaging to local wells and surrounding farm lands. But we can't run this modern technology of conveniences on dreams and wishes. There has to be a happy medium of seeking cleaner alternative energy sources, without ruining our economies.

Is your current position that the climate is not changing, or simply that human beings are not responsible for causing climate change?

Just checking.

Plus, there is something to say for every little change helps. Advocating better efficiency in appliances, automobiles, and industry doesn't mean people should also give up things like air conditioning.

The AGW crowd says we are warming the planet by using fossil fuel.
That is correct, but last time I checked, they advocated legislation that limits pollution by businesses, which they believe is a significant contributor to AGW. It seems like you're complaining that they are too moderate and should be more radical with their goals. Personally, I don't think I'd support a law limiting AC usage.

Keeping my AC. Period. And I run it low as possible all the time.

We used swamp coolers when I was a kid. These days my AC keeps my computers cool.

The gov't already wants to install smart meters, so they can control your AC and hot water heater.

Of course I accept what climate scientists say. It's science. I still use my AC though.

Do I realize that I'm cutting years off my life when I eat sweets, drink too much or don't exercise enough? Yes. I understand the science.
Do I realize that I'm completely wasteful when I throw out food, or generate more trash than necessary. Yes, again I understand the science & the impact.

I do a lot of things that contradict what science says I ought do.

... the point of it all is that excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere's composition causes a shift in climate, and thus we need to stop putting so much in the air. That's it. It doesn't mean that we need to go back to the dark ages or sacrifice our lives. You and I come from a tech-savvy and responsible country, the USA, and we're going to both need to use that American technology and our responsibility to cut a percentage of what we already produce. Nothing more or less.

:lamo ALL your miniscule cuts to your personal usage are negated by the first seconds of one of Al Gore's many air flights. multiply that by the multitude of air flights daily.

As part of a radical spending control and reduction program I decided to forgo heat and AC as much as possible beginning 1/1/12.

I did not turn either heat or AC on at all, not one time, for all of 2012 and 2013.

January 2014 was 4 degrees below normal for the month, and on 1/30/14 it finally got too damn cold for me, and I turned on the heat. God it felt good.

And BTW I only saved $192 a year.

Going without AC was much less of a challenge than going without heat, partly because my apartment faces the sun directly for only about 3-4 hours in the morning, and direct light is largely blocked by dense tree growth. I found that training a fan directly on me to be tremendously effective in reducing heat discomfort.

Living in North Carolina I do not experience the extremes found in most of the rest of the country; you just can't go without heat in the winter much north of Washington DC. As for AC, though, humans prospered in climates both tropically hot and humid without AC, so there is no excuse for overdoing it at home. AC is known to have a significant effect of workplace productivity, so businesses may be justified in keeping things cool.

Like whenever it's hot.

And scientists are saints who are never wrong.

BUT, economics rule...sadly, so the summertime setting is 75 and the Saab AC works not...she runs and runs well and that's it....this I must fix.
Smart Meters ?
Lets be careful, as I say, economics, and the wealthy must be better off than I....no problem....and, I do NOT want people needlessly dying due to economics.

It may be.......but, keyboards are cheap($10.6 @ WM), I count NOT silly pennies.
And, my Windows 8.1 has a rudimentary spell checker.....
I am not crying about anything....yet.....global warming/change is real, but its economics that forces me to skimp and save and be somewhat responsible..

cant click any of your choices total BS poll. no option for AGW is a hoax, only right wingers are greedy? please look at that thief Jesse jackson Jr, that was not a major case of greed?

That India and China act in a irresponsible manner is no reason for us to !
But, let us not get carried away, otherwise, the voice of fear and ignorance will "take over"....works two ways, you know....

Not gonna tarnish your poll sawyer. No need for AC where I'm from but I fully accept AGW. If derive energy at all from fossil fuels should I just vote yes?

My AC is in use rather often. With the computer, widescreen, etc. on, it warms up pretty quick. However, here in Oregon, I pay far less to cool in the warm season than I do to heat in the cold season. I also use a dehumidifier, because cooled humid air just feels awful.

Yes, AC uses alot of energy when on. However, mine cycles and is on less than 10% of the time.

I'm not using it as an excuse for us to act, I'm saying our actions make not difference in the big picture.

We 310,000,000 here do plenty, it's time the 3,000,000,000 over there get off their asses and ante up!
