Pretty straight forward poll. Are you generally for or against large corporate merger/acquisitions?
What are some of your reasons? What should be done if anything?
With the recent announcement of a couple planned large mergers/acquisitions I thought I would ask how others feel about it. Personally I feel that these mega corporations are an overall negative presence that only help propel the wealth disparity that we have in the US today not to mention limit choice for the consumer and also give these companies more leverage when pushing for political changes that generally are not in the best interest for your average people but instead are about the businesses profits.
I more closely fit the libertarian outlook on most issues but one area where we disagree is that I believe that if we were able to achieve a truely free market that these issues would only expand and excel (not that it isnt a problem already imo). I feel limits need to be in place or eventually we may end up with a elite ruling class that hold all the wealth and the general population are simply peasants in the system. I understand that many people do not like the idea of their potential wealth being handicapped and they believe that anything that they are able to achieve should never be limited by government/others, but at what point would these people say ok enough is enough? Lets use this extreme example to make my case. What if in 50 years the top 10 corporations or their owners held 95% of the private property in the the United states. Would that be to much? or should these businesses/people be able to own all they were able to afford? What would be a reasonable solution so that this could not occur? Or is it ok if it does happen?
I have mulled this dilima around for many years and have not come up with a perfect solution to what I consider an ever growing problem. Let me have your thoughts and ideas please.
