Would you want a gun in this situation?

Would you want a gun in this situation?

Long time ago ( I was single at the time), guys broke into my home. Would having a gun change the outcome? No, because I was a good sleeper back then and didn't wake up until they were right next to my bed. Thank the Lord, they were only after money and I got away with some severe bruises.
Now I am a light sleeper, and when I am alone at home and hear a strange noise, I grab the pepper spray and check out what is going on. Having "been there", I actually feel more confident. Oh, and we do own a gun.

I always think it's cute when people who have never been in any real danger condemn people for defending their lives and the lives of their family.

I find it cute how people justify living in fear. And by the way, you know jack **** about me. Making retarded assumptions probably not a good plan.

I had a guy break into my house when I was a teenager. It was the scariest experience of my entire life. I would rather use non-lethal methods if at all possible, but I don't think it's unreasonable to have a gun as well. You just never know when you might need it.

True, but there could certainly be occasions when having a gun would be most convenient. Look at what happened in Connecticut with the doctor and his family a few years ago? I think if one of them had a gun, they could have had an opportunity to get to it and use it perhaps, given the amount of time they were held captive.

It may change an outcome. But I really think that you have to keep your cool under pressure to make best use of a deadly weapon. Just having one may give you a false sense of security? Not sure.

I do not live in fear of unlikely events happening.
Do you have a smoke detector in your home? DO you have a fire extinguisher in your house? Do you wear seatbelts or a helmet (if you ride a bike or motorcycle)?

Those are basic safety precautions people take to protect themselves and their families from unlikely events. Would you say people that are equipped and prepared for unlikely events are living in fear?

I don't own a gun, but I have thought about it and I can't blame people who do keep one to protect themselves and their families. If I ever decided to get one, I would definitely take classes and practice though! :) I wouldn't be stupid about it.

Excellent point! I wouldn't get too hopeful that she answers though. Any question that might make her position seem inconsistent she just ignores.

I own and train for such scenarios. I only pray I wake up fast enough to implement my training.

That sort of thing happens every day. Why do you think its unlikely?

People are hit by lightning every day. I do not walk around with a ground strap.

but is there any single scenario where you'd want a gun to defend yourself?

Absolutely. I own a few different guns.

My only issue is the with the few people who seem to insist, or insinuate that people who don't want to own a gun are somehow less caring, less intelligent, or even negligent when it comes to their homes and families.

I own a couple guns but have never felt the need to sleep with one . Lets try a different "what if" You hear a noise in the living room at 2:30 am. You jump up, grab your gun and go into the hall. You see a shadow moving close to the window, you take aim, pull the trigger and the intruder drops. You wait a couple of minutes to be sure no one else is there. Turn on a light and see your teenage son laying in a pool of blood. He was just sneaking back in after being outside. Do you still want to sleep with a gun?

I'm curious about how anti-gunners would feel in real, dangerous situations. It's easy to decry the horrors of gun ownership in the safety of your armchair, but if the lives of you and your family were at risk would your convictions still hold?

The scenario:
It's late at night in your house, you and your family are asleep, when armed men break in. You don't know if they're there to rob you, rape you, murder you, or all of the above. At that point would you wish you had a gun?

The way I see it, if you're anti-gun and would still want a gun to defend yourself in this scenario you're a hypocrite. This isn't an absurd scenario. It happens daily in just about every country in the world. So what say you?

Clearly, in that situation, I'd rather have a cell phone. Like saying goes, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Im pro gun, but in this scenario I think a flamethrower would be much better.

A burning body is a fire hazard. It is much easier getting a blood stain off the carpet, a burn...not so easy.

I don't live in fear of unlikely events. I would never shoot blindly like that, specially if I know there's other people in the house.

I wonder if in the last seconds of her life Mrs. Lanza wished she hadn't had guns in her house?

Target identification is one of the very first things you learn in a gun safety course. If you know your family is in the house and you can't locate them, it's probably not wise to fire blindly into the dark.

If that's the kind of thing you do, maybe it's better you don't own a gun and just hope for the best, as you'd obviously be useless even with one.

Clearly, in that situation, I'd rather have a cell phone. Like saying goes, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic so I'll skip the point where I mock you for being naive.

Two can play this game. What say you to this similarly unlikely and absurd situation:Thieves break in to steal your TV, and you go downstairs to check it out. As is almost always the case, the thieves only want your stuff and to leave. They threaten you to go away, and they start to make good their escape. Suddenly you dive for your gun cabinet near your TV, throw it open, and one of the thieves, upon realising his life is in mortal danger because some moron intends to shoot him, hits you over the head with his crowbar. At what point do you wish you had not had any guns in the house?
This has to be the most retarded anti-gun statement I have ever seen - and it has great competition.

Since you want to pull out her dead body to make a point, I suspect if she had time for conscious thought in her last seconds it probably would have been "damn...maybe I should have got him some help sooner." Considering he was both deranged and violent, its entirely likely he would have used a knife or a baseball bat on her instead of a 22lr.

Im sure your morally superior position to someone forced to watch a love one get brutalized and then murdered would be "its OK honey...at least we dont own guns!"

Would you want a gun in this situation?
Before reading any thread content I'm going to answer with an emphatic YES because by default I always want a gun on my person always....unless I'm swimming or showering.

So, on with the thread...

It's as likely an event as the op "what if" Teens sneak in and out.

Another question: If there are so many gun carrying John Wayne's out there why is there so much crime?

I like the part about how they only want our stuff, like home invasion is no big deal and it's our job to provide them the safest possible environment to work in. **** that.

Let's face it, it would indeed take a madman to want to rape you ;) Now me, on the other hand, my sexy candy apple ass may be very appealing indeed to many a thug and that's also why I do my very best to keep my sexy ass out of prison
