Lately it seems that everyone who comes out gets a grandiose platform. Someone comes out and it's talked about for days. Many have called them heroes while giving them a virtual standing ovation. I don't care if someone is gay or not, but it just bugs me when people call them heroes or tear others down for having a difference of opinion. The definition of hero for me is someone going into a burning building to save someone, or a person taking a bullet for someone. It's Just starting to seem like this is becoming a bit of an obsession.

I see it as a necessary step towards that time when there is no need because being gay is considered no big deal.

As long as people consider it such a big deal that they prattle on with their arbitrary prejudices, it will continue to be necessary.

It is courageous to come out in a sports league that is very "masculine" and has historically been a bastion of homophobia. Is it heroic? No. But, I would call it a courageous act.

I'm not personally. I pretty much couldnt care less.

Yes, absolutely.

Michael Sam is the most-recent prime example. He's a guy that was picked 249th overall and is getting far and away more press coverage than the top ten draft picks are getting. His status as homosexual has negated the athletic superiority of all the top players chosen well in advance of him, which is weird because in sports, merit comes from athletic ability, not who a athlete has sex with or prefers companionship with.

I'm obsessed with Shakira's sexuality...mostly because I'm not a part of it.

Damn restraining orders.

I think we can still use the dose of reality that is famous and popular gays coming out. It makes it real.

I often say this... people who are public figures and who are gay and come out with a big song and dance and statement about it are doing a disservice to the homosexual community just like the openly gay strut-around flaming homosexuals are.

It is the fault of the homosexuals that the general perception about them that they are like this:

Instead of being normal, average, boring individuals who just mind their own business, no different than you and me who don't fancy having pants with butcheeks cut-outs and who want to show they nipples, listening to barbara streissand and looking like clowns in public. In other words, there should be no image disctinction between a homo and a normal person. No mental images like the ones above must be associated with homosexuality if you ever hope to not have this spectacle of it all.

In other words, if you want the response for the phrase "hey, I'm gay" to be "Ok, and?" (which is what you should want to be ) then you can't have the desire for people to treat you differently, to pay special attention to you because of your sexuality.

It's more fun when a 7th rounder who has never played a down in the NFL gets an endorsement deal.

Clowney? Sure. Manziel? Fine. However, chances are excellent that Sam will never see a regulation game with the Rams.

It's all well and good that people have started to acknowledge that there are gays among us, and that they're really not so different from anyone else. Now, let's get on with our lives and not obsess over what celebrity is or is not a gay.

Now, if you find out that your spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend is actually gay, that could be a big deal.

......................

Why should homosexuals (or anyone for that matter) force themselves into not being themselves just for your comfort

Or anyone's comfort

You make no sense.

On one hand, you say an athete (who is normal looking and acting in all respects) coming out does a disservice to the gay community, then you post two pictures of what you see as the image gay men have created.

On one hand, you wish to inhibit the more normal gay men from stating who they are, but then accuse gay men as the ones fostering the more extreme charicatures you promote.

I think we're obsessed with people's sexuality, but not because of the positive reaction when someone comes out.

People far too readily judge others for being anything other than straight, anything other than monogamous, married to more than one person or to someone of the same sex. I'm not saying that it's the same "people" in each instance, just that no matter what your lifestyle there will always be a large group of Americans ready to decry you if it's not a mainstream lifestyle. We are, as a nation, a bunch of squeamish prudes who are far too eager to have an opinion about the lifestyles of others, even when those lifestyles have absolutely zero impact on our own lives.

Beause it helps homophobes foster the notion that homosexuals are like those in the pics he submitted. It undermines the homophobe agenda if people like Sam come out of the closet, since he doesn't fit the sterotype they promote.

Maybe I failed to state the point across. I shall reiterate and try to expand on what I was trying to say.

ofc, there are homosexuals of all kinds. they're not all alike. What I am saying i that being gay and taking part in the behavior as stated in those pictures is damaging the homosexual community. Look at the 2 gays at the 2nd picture. By all definitions you can imagine, they are good looking men. I would kill to have the body of the one of the left. But it doesn't help homosexuals to go about strapping wings on your back and strutting around like a peacock. No matter how normal looking you are, no matter how fit you are... behaving that way is alienating, for good reason, to a lot of people.

And its their fault for behaving this way. nobody is forcing the gays to dress that way and strut around like that... and those are conservative examples. there are pictures who are quite NSFW and I won't post them here... if you just google them you can see them. You think 1 Ellen Page is going to remedy that? Ellen Page is very sweet girl and her coming out was quite emotional and maybe it struck a chord with people... but then you go to the "pride festival" and you see the dildo strap-ons and the whole clown parade... and something is disconnected there. One emotionally delivered coming out... tons of people announcing and celebrating they are gay in the most crude manner.

You can't just talk about the coming out part without discussing the rest of the events that impact the gay community. And also, if we are to just talk about coming out... why not be like gandalf? He's gay and you don't see him making a big song and dance about it. Or like the... whats his name... the asian guy from star trek who is gay and is just the man. there was a post about him recently on how he replied to some bigots online. Those people are the kind of people you want to have as the image of the homosexuals. Not the flamers and the flashers and the ones who make a spectacle coming out like it's a big thing.

I don't get why anyone even cares if someone looks like a "clown" in public. It's not like they're spear-tackling you and dry-humping you while lay dazed on the ground.

I like to not wear pants in the house because I wear boxers. I do put them on when I go outside. Why should I discomfort myself for other people's comfort? I'll tell you why, because it's civil that's why. I don't wear clothes that reveal my nipples when I go outside for the same reason. I don't want to subject people to see my nipples because it may cause them discomfort. And all of us here in society have to make a certain understanding that if we are to live together and not suffocate one another, we need to adhere to a code of conduct that is both good for you and me and all of us. because we're not kings of the world and nobody has to take our **** and our little pet peeves.

I don't get why anyone even cares if someone looks like a "clown" in public. It's not like they're spear-tackling you and dry-humping you while lay dazed on the ground.

What I said above. I don't have to take your **** when I'm out in public and as a sign of respect, I don't make you take my ****.

Are we obsessed with people's sexuality?
`
If by "we" you mean the conservatives, there are a number of reasons why gays coming out may affect them;

1 - Latent homosexuals in denial is a big reason.

2 - Dropped on head while an infant.

3 - The religious sin/pleasure dichotomy.

Maybe I failed to state the point across. I shall reiterate and try to expand on what I was trying to say.

Sure -- I'm with you there. They areas damaging to the image of gay people as black thugs are to the African-American community, money grubbing Jews to the Jewish community, Lazy Mexicans for the latino community or snotty, effete French to the image of the French. The difference between a person's innate sexuality and their ethnicity or national origin, however, is that nobody know a person is gay unless they are told, whereas all the others are generally known. Now,there will certainly be bigots abounding just as always, but at least in the case of ethnicity or national origin, people can experience that wide range of behavior to which you alluded. They can see the hard working Mexicans or altruistic Jews, etc. With Gay people, they can't, and so they are more prone to adhering to those stereotypes they CAN see.

That is why it is so important for people like Sam to come out of the closet. If his announcement created a firestorm, I would say that has more to do with the reaction than his need for attention. Until thereare plenty more like him, I'm sure the announcements will create controversy and attention. When such a time comes when there is no need for such an announcement, there will be no firerstorm.

Yes, pictures like that give gays a bad reputation, but pictures like the ones below do not give straight people a bad reputation

Exactly. When I was at Marine Corps. recruit training one of my best friends there was gay. He was a squad leader and the only recruit in my platoon physically stronger than me. He was cool as hell and there was *zero* indication that he was gay, unlike others who ogled during showers.

This might be an unpopular view or against political correctness, but my friend was a respectable homosexual. He didn't have that ****ing annoying high-pitched voice, didn't flaunt it and didn't eye-**** dudes during showers. I would have taken a bullet or endless IT for the guy.

The question should have been if the media is obsessed with people's sexuality.

Like you I don't care what somebody does in their bedroom and I don't think it makes them anything but annoying when they come out and publically tell us what they do there.

A restraining order is only good inthe US.

Follow here when she goes back to Colombia.

It could work.
