Are Affirmative Action programs racist?

But it doesn't reflect positively on the test score averages...

Standardized tests are flawed and minorities (by way of economics) do not enjoy equal opportunity in formal education.

good post but I oppose affirmative action since I don't believe in group guilt or group rights

if a black was discriminated against he or she can sue under Title VII. But don't tell my son that he shouldn't go to say OSU Honors programs because some black kid with lower scores deserves AA

Your son can go to many other programs. Blacks do not generally enjoy equal opportunity primary and secondary education as a result of economics and other factors. Without AA, many qualified blacks would have very few options.

diversity should be based on lots of people with top credentials in different areas

not people who are mediocre but have different skin colors

I liked the DIVERSITY in my senior suite

1) one guy was a Jewish kid from CA-graduated high school early and decided he needed to grow up a bit so he enlisted in the marines-earned some decorations then went to college

2) another guy was the son of a midwest college professor. Was a chess master before he could drive. Also was a world class backgammon player and got banned in Atlantic City since he could count cards

3) Another guy was the son of Park avenue advertising executives. A member of the SAG, he did commercials in high school and later clerked for the supreme court, and was head of the DOJ.

4) another guy was an all league gymnast (rings) and a professional class ballet dancer. He and I were also black belts.

5) another guy was the son of a union leader (pipe fitters I believe) second generation Italian. He could fix anything-cars, faucets, toasters.

6) a pre med nerd who studied all the time. He had an amazing knowledge of movie trivia as well as an obsession about P-Chem

7) me-an all american collegiate shooter who was the highest rated table tennis player in the school for the entire decade. Me and the SAG guy also won several debating titles.

sorry, innocent white kids shouldn't be passed over for such reasons

and lots of black kids who get AA already go to elite prep schools etc and they still cannot make the upper level SAT scores that many white kids going to lesser HS's achieve

Affirmative Action and lowering standards do not seem to be working...
that's because they're treating the symptoms rather than the disease.

That's not real diversity. Everyone, except perhaps athletes, must meet the minimum requirements to get into a school.

Your son being denied a single school is in not the same as dealing with racism every day of ones life.

Your son being denied a single school is in no way whatsoever similar to dealing with racism every day of ones life.

sorry, I won't support injustice directed at an innocent person to make up for injustice that happened to the great great great grandfather of some kid who is too lazy to make good grades

real diversity is different strengths

not different skin colors when half of those involved are second rate

You're complaining about being turned down maybe one time ever and comparing it with being oppressed all of ones life. It's BS.

the best public school in Cincinnati was ranked 3rd in the country when it had exacting entrance standards and was full of the children of holocaust survivors and others who fled europe in the 30s and 40s. Few blacks could make those standards-the ones who did were very successful. But later one, the standards were lowered for blacks trying to get into this school. and yet, while this school is still one of the best in Ohio, its nowhere near the top ten it once was.

Vote away my friends, vote away

Are Affirmative Action programs racist?
It is government instituted and socially accepted "racism"!

Which is the absolute most offensive and oppressive kind!

Real diversity is different cultures, economic backgrounds, experiences (including with racism, sexism and homophobia), and other macro factors. Not minor differences in a narrow pool.

You blame diversity?

sorry but you cannot prove that the lazy kids who get AA were oppressed but we can prove those passed over were racially discriminated against. You engage in the racist stereotype that "black=oppressed" and white mean "beneficiary of oppression"

group rights is a belief held by the weak minded who don't have the intellectual rigor to examine people individually

America used to rank near the top in test scores. For some reason, since the late sixties America's test scores have steadily dropped to where we are today.

Do you think it is a coincidence that the dropping of our test scores directly coincides with when diversity began and has steadily dropped as diversity has increased?

Not racist, just true.

You blame diversity?

I blame black kids who didn't have the academic talent to meet the proper standards being able to get into that school. less intelligent or ambitious students decreased the school

The problem in that case is not diversity so much as a bad environment for those that fell under the standards.

Edit: And that could be anything from poor prior education to a bad family structure at home.

huh? the school was forced to take inferior students as a result of AA. less able students hurt the learning environment of the talented

I would say that means test scores prior to the late 60's were artificially inflated by leaving a portion of the population out of the tests.

But why were the students inferior? I would guess that a part of the reason would be the environment they had to deal with.

that would assume that every black kid who got AA came from a more challenging environment than every white kid they displaced. that would be a lie.

especially if say black kids who went to the Hyde Park School or the Kilgore school (two of the top rated elementary schools in the Cincinnati Public School District that sent lots of kids to the magnet school-Walnut hills) were getting breaks over peers from the same neighborhood and elementary schools.
