A multimillion dollar measure to fund the Obama Presidential Library has passed a hurdle in Springfield. The bill slid through an Illinois House committee Wednesday, despite Republican opposition.

Republicans want the library, but believe it should be paid through private funds. If the whole general assembly approves the bill, the measure would use $100 million of taxpayer money.

Other States are bidding for his Library.....Hawaii and New York. Wonder how New Yorkers feel about it costing them at a Minimum of a 100 mil win the bid. At least Illinois and Hawaii BO can call home. Also.....would it even be worth the 100 mil.

Should Illinois taxpayers be on the hook for $100 million to bring an Obama Presidential Library and Museum to Chicago?

I seem to recall Nixon's library was privately funded. I have been to Lincoln's and I believe that is privately funded through donations to this day.

If this incompetent slime can boast about raising $1 billion to fly around lying to the public, then I would say he should raise it himself.

Knowing this first family, they will likely charge admission.

No. They should not.:peace

ODS is amazing to watch just destroy the minds of right wingers

If Obama or any president for that matter was from Oregon, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I think the tourism generated would more than pay for it.

I thought most came thru private donations.....are there others wherein the taxpayers had to up the money?

Heya PB. :2wave: Do you think any state should be able to push for the library to be in their state? Or shouldn't it be from the states that the Presidents would call home?

If they build Obama's library in Chicago, it should be located in one of the social service welfare buildings on Chicago's South Side.

I have always believed that Presidential libraries are built and funded by private donations from both individuals and various groups. Have taxpayers ever been asked to provide the funds via taxes?

Heya Apache.

They just had a school built and named after him here too.

Although.....not on the more economically depraved south-side of the city.

Heya JH. :2wave: What do you think with only the Home states having the Right to Bid as opposed to allowing any state to bid?

I don't think any state should bid. The President's supporters should make a decision and proceed. :peace

I just hope they don't name a U.S. Navy ship after Obama. I don't think the Navy operates any garbage scows anymore.

Yeah that's Right......you bring up a good point. He started his group. Shouldn't they be out to raise money for him? Even any Other President who should form a group should be about doing the same.

I don't think they should use tax payers money myself.

i do not know of any.

I am not surprised that Obama wants tax money.

He has, after all, been living off the taxpayer all his life, why should he change?

You would think with all his campaigning he wouldn't have any trouble raising the money to get it built. They also want to have a Museum for him. Myself I think it should go to Hawaii. That's where he was living before he ever came here.

I am even wondering if he will come back here to live. Since he doesn't have to many friends around here.

A library?

Does anyone under 50 actually go to those things anymore - other then the homeless who want someplace to sleep in the day?

I loved libraries when I was younger - now they seem almost totally superfluous.

If there are things you can find in a library that you cannot find online - they ain't much, I assume.

Why don't they just do what libraries like this are really for - glorified statues to ex-POTUS's...so just build a big ass statue and move on.

Then America can elect the next totally useless POTUS that they can built a statue/library to him/her when they are through wrecking the country just a little bit more.

Yea, Where are those Saudi Princes when you need them? I think all Presidents should take anonymous foreign contributions while in office to build their libraries.

(Newser) – President Bush's coy refusal to name the mystery donors helping to erect his $200 million presidential library is problematic, writes David Corn in Mother Jones' MoJo blog. Though the law doesn't require him to reveal names, his actions raise serious ethical questions. "What's problematic is the prospect of a sitting president obtaining foreign cash for a pet project and not disclosing it," argues Corn.

Corn suggests that Saudi Arabia's royal family—which reportedly funded both George HW Bush's and Bill Clinton's libraries—is a likely contributor, and worries that it's "an easy way for these foreigners to curry favor." He also points out that while still in office, Bush could "hit up American corporations and individuals looking to score points with the White House."

Really?

Not even Rahm?

Wow, he was a community organizer there for years...

It should go to Hawaii, we can have the first presidential library in Asia.

Oh yeah Rahm is a friend.....but where is Rahm going to go after he is done screwing up Chicago?

Heya IM. :2wave: So does this mean you think the taxpayers should have to pay for it?

If the alternative is foreign interests buying favor...yes. All Presidents should have a library, but I don't want any quid pro quo thank-you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's

How is a Presidential Library paid for and funded?

A Presidential Library is constructed with private or non-Federal funds donated to non-profit organizations established usually for the express purpose of building a Presidential Library and supporting its programs. Some libraries have also received construction and development funding from state and/or local governments.

The library is then transferred to the Federal government and operated and maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) through its congressionally appropriated operating budget. Some staff and programs at Presidential libraries are paid for with funds from associated private foundations organized to fund the construction of the library and provide continuing support for library programs and special events, such as conferences and exhibitions.

Realistically tho.....it doesn't have to be with foreign interests. Why can't they raise the money themselves Right here in the US.

So now if there is no others outside the US.. Where does that leave the question on the taxpayers having to foot the bill?

Btw you don't think Bush can even compare to the money that the Clintons receive from the Saudi. Which that Global Initiative that Bilbo came up with to help attract all those foreign interests as you say..... and is and ongoing and ever building process. Each and every year now, did ya?
