"McALESTER, Okla. – A botched execution that used a new drug combination left an Oklahoma inmate writhing and clenching his teeth on the gurney Tuesday, leading prison officials to halt the proceedings before the inmate's eventual death from a heart attack.
Clayton Lockett, 38, was declared unconscious 10 minutes after the first of the state's new three-drug lethal injection combination was administered. Three minutes later, though, he began breathing heavily, writhing, clenching his teeth and straining to lift his head off the pillow.

The blinds were eventually lowered to prevent those in the viewing gallery from watching what was happening in the death chamber, and the state's top prison official eventually called a halt to the proceedings. Lockett died of a heart attack a short time later, the Department of Corrections said.
"It was a horrible thing to witness. This was totally botched," said Lockett's attorney, David Autry."

Errr, yes! We cannot really burn them alive can we? Some civility should be in order! What sort of a question is that?

Wait, they stopped trying to kill someone they were trying to kill because they weren't killing him the right way? And then he died?

I found this:
Bornt wrote a letter Feb. 7 stating: "Clayton being put to death by lethal injection is almost too easy of a way to die after what he did to us. ... He will just be strapped to the table and will go to sleep and his heart will stop beating."

He got his wish.

One intended to generate response and hopefully thought.....seems to have worked.

I'm unclear as well why they don't just use general anesthesia. Hell, just give them a bottle of Jack Daniels.

While it sucks that perhaps things didn't go "as planned" - I have a hard time feeling sorry for the guy.

If anything I feel bad for the people that had to deal with the situation.

In the end....the result was what the courts decided his fate should be.

Clearly - the means to the end needs to be fixed.

I don't get it though, when I've had to put down dogs, they get one shot and basically go right to sleep.
What's so hard about doing that with a human being?

I prefer the 10 cent solution.

Well... first off, the state shouldn't be killing its own citizens to begin with. The death penalty should be abolished.

But lets put that to the side for now.
Different executions have different meanings. Like shooting someone against the wall is a typical method of dealing with traitors or deserters. Hanging is a very versatile method used by people typically to discourage rebellion or dissent. It was used in armies and by oppression groups.
Crucifiction ofc, is another method of execution that had one meaning to the pre-Christian romans and another to Christians.
etc.

Death by poison was always considered the most "civilized" way to die. That's why it was always used by, say, nobility to commit suicide in ancient times. Cleopatra is probably the most recognizable example of this. She poisoned herself. Another example is Eva Braun and even Hitler. They took cyanide. Anyway. Therefore, aside from poison getting this determination that it's a more "humane" way to die it's also gained this dimension when it is a more willing choice of death. Because so many people took the poison on their own accord. It was their choice as opposed to the alternative that was in store. So that's why this is the method of choice today in the countries like the USA, who keep this barbaric method and execute their people, to poison the people who sentenced to die. You can say it's "Drug induced death" but it's just basically still poison.

The chair is a novelty and I don't know if people still use it but it doesn't really have much a historic dimension to it, as the methods of execution described earlier.

I think prisoners who receive the death penalty do not necessarily have to die completely painlessly, but we should not make their deaths needlessly barbaric either. Whatever Oklahoma is using isn't working obviously, and there are likely better ways to do it.

General anesthesia would be a good start, and then you can use any number or ways without causing them pain. Or just strap them down and hook them up to a ventilator feeding them an inert gas like nitrogen or helium. There won't be any CO2 buildup in the blood, so they won't get the suffocating feeling, they'll just pass out and die shortly afterward from lack of oxygen.

I remember a thread when they announced they were going to be doing this and me and a few others having concerns. I really don't understand the execution methods or thought processes behind some of this. We should not be experimenting on people. There are proven ways to execute a person.

It's nasty what happened to him. But what's nastier is what he and his 3 filthy friends did to that poor teenage girl.

why not just strap them into a heavy chair, with base of skull clamped back against the muzzle of a very short barreled 410 shotgun? pLastic bag overhead to catch the mess. 3 volunteers, 3 lit up buttons, random computer thing so nobody can know which one sent the signal, instant, guaranteed painless death. no need to pay some dr $5000 for the deed, either.

Since his crimes were first-degree murder, rape, forcible sodomy, kidnapping, assault and battery, burglary and robbery, I don't have much sympathy for this POS. Three Face Charges In Perry Crime Spree | News OK

Of course it does. As digusting as this creature was, how do we show we are any better than him if we allow him to suffer unnecessarily?

The actions of the state should not be measured against the actions of the criminal. That's the road to barbarity.

Thus.....a bullet to the brain.

Immediate (No suffering)
Inexpensive (less than $100 including paying the squad)
Humane (comparatively)
Guaranteed to accomplish the goal

Plus, if retribution is required...we can put the Victims family on the squad.

It was such a horrible crime. They buried her alive.

I feel so bad for her family. I just can't imagine the nightmares they've had for decades. <sigh>

Not even remotely. It may be that some ****bags deserve a protracted demise.

I tend to believe in eye for an eye, though excessive brutality does take one to the same level as the scum.

The execution wasn't planned to turn out that way, but I can't say I carry any sympathy for him that it did.

I'd call that economically viable.

I feel the same way for her family.

That guy definitely deserved the death penalty for such horrible crimes. And as far as the mistakes made in the way they put him to death, it is not like that is the norm, it was most likely a fluke accident.

we KNOW that innocent men have been sent to death row. If we've killed an innocent man, at least know that we did so painlessly, instantly. That waiting on the poison is bs.
