"If the top 10% already pay 70% of all federal income taxes then there can be no claim that they do not pay at least their fair share"

Is the above statement True or False?

This is what you wrote said about it a couple days ago.

"Again, I need to remind you what the group pays as whole is meaningless because they pay taxes as individuals. "

Bored?

Nope, not at all. What do you say?

If you consider the fact they own 75 percent of all "wealth" in the country, then no, the statement might not hold. But since this is about "income", of which they constitute about 48 percent of, then yes, the statement could be considered true.

I still voted "no" however. There are plenty of other factors to consider. There is a reason we have a "progressive" tax system, it helps compensate for the inherent inequalities in a system such as ours. Yes, that would be the "redistribute the wealth" thing.

I think lots of people will claim the top 10% don't pay their fair share. I'm going to go out on a limb and surmise that's where you're headed here with the quote from Jack.

The above statement is false.Even if everybody for example paid 10% of their income the top 10% would still pay a huge percentage of the taxes collected because they make a significantly way more money than your average American. I do support a fair tax, preferably in the form a national sales tax. So I am not some progressive who thinks the more you make the higher percentage you should be taxed.

The statement is absolutely true, and only disagreed with by people who are jealous, lazy, and envious of another's success. If someone becomes rich, they truly need to believe that the government chose them to be a winner because it acquits them of their own failures.

Humans are responsibility-shirkers by nature, and when they can't validate their own shortcomings, they seek external sources to blame.

You are correct the statement is false, however the fact they are in a group is literally meaningless. People pay their taxes as individuals, not as a member of a group.

That probably depends on your own point of view and less a question of something being true or false.
But the question is very much worth looking at. Is the proportion of tax paid higher or lower than the proportion of wealth or income?
What is the impact on investment vs consumptiin aggregates for society? How does this impact longterm welfare? That kind of stuff.

My statement still holds true regardless if is a group or individual.Because a single wealthy individual is still going to pay more taxes than a poor or middle class person paying the same percentage.

I get tired of seeing polls like this that don't offer enoughfacts to base an opinion on.

Only two responses?

Binary thinking?

What is society coming to?

For me to make an informed opinion, I would need more data. No wonder this nation is in such sorry shape. We have too many people who cannot think past their own preconceived notions.

I would say the bottom 30+ percent don't pay their fair share.

Couldn't agree more. As the state of California has proved, demonizing the rich, while at the same time creating a tax structure that depends on them staying rich and getting richer, is a disaster.

I would say the bottom 30+ percent don't pay their fair share.

That's an easy fix - eliminate the extra EIC you get from children. Nothing bleeds the system like a slut who has three babies and three baby daddies.

We should be discouraging the poor from procreation.

Is the above statement True or False?

False. Fair is subjective.

Why should someone be given more tax exemptions for more dependents? that is a life choice. Why should others make up for it?

No matter how we do tax law, someone will not be happy. Still, it should at least be based on wages. Not the number of dependents. I say a married man with two children should pay the same taxes as a man with no children or wife. That's just for starters.

I agree with getting rid of EIC. However, I would phase it out over time for those already collecting it. If I had my choice, I would pick a date about one year from now and tell everyone, no more EIC for any dependents born after that date. Grandfather those who have already become dependent on it slowly reducing the rate to zero over maybe a 10 year period.

I would prefer a consumption tax with all "necessities" at a zero tax. I would support a flat tax however with only a standard deduction that is equal to all wage earners.

I could get on board with that...maybe make it five years instead of ten.

Who cares what's fair?

"If the top 10% already pay 70% of all federal income taxes then there can be no claim that they do not pay at least their fair share"

Is the above statement True or False?

It is false because the definition of fair is strictly subjective. Many believe that a fair share will be when the wealthiest pay 100 % of all taxes.

The idea of a fair share should never be permitted as an argument for taxation.

I think you voted wrong. Your first sentence is the opposite of the rest of your post. Reread the question carefully.
