The 2013 tax tables are below:
larger responsibility to the state
How do you figure that?
Are you serious?
Making your OWN money makes the state a dependent by default? Hell, why not just rob everyone's paycheck and just trust the "state" to do the right thing?
I can't believe so many people think liberty is a sin.

... Someone who makes 400k a year should not pay the same rate as someone who is hovering around the poverty line.
The tax rates don't reflect what rich people actually pay. The rich can afford attorneys and accountants and structure their finances to avoid or delay taxes. Also, many of the rich are wealthy, but don't have a high income.

Yes, I do know that. However if you have an adjusted gross income of $1 billion, your effective rate is only about 22%. And there is no state that would bring the total anywhere near 50%.You do know that most states have their own income tax on top of federal tax, right?
Why? If you don't mind.

Rob everyone's paycheck? Come on. Taxes are taxes, we all have to pay them, it is the price of living in a great country. A flat tax is ridiculous. Someone who makes 400k a year should not pay the same rate as someone who is hovering around the poverty line.
For the same reason some religions have tithes. The community as a whole dictates that a percentage is more fair than a set number. It is unfair that the poor pay the same amount as the rich when it is more detrimental to them to pay the fee.

No, if you make enough money to be in the highest tax bracket, you have a larger responsibility to the state. You owe your financial success in part to the nation we live in which allows you to prosper. That and tax dollars building schools, libraries, and roads gives other citizens the ability to prosper, bolstering the economy of the nation as a whole.
So "great" countries have to charge for the right to live within them? That kind of thinking makes me want to pick up and move to a country that can prove its greatness through methods other than theft and extortion.
It's a cute little slippery slope. Maybe the state just decides that you don't need money. It'll take everything you have and determine, on its own, what you need and what you don't.
Just do as you're told.

Does a pretty woman owe men a lot more sex than average women because the pretty woman benefits more from men doing her bidding than what average women receive?
Does a talented musician owe the public free concerts compared to a mediocre musician?
Does a talent car mechanic have to give away his service one day a week compared to the mechanic who is just mediocre?
Or to take the argument directly to your territory, if the higher income earner owes more to the state because the state is responsible for his success then isn't his good judgment also needed in terms of voting - shouldn't he be granted more votes than the low income earner because he's clearly shown that his judgment is better because he was able to use those societal resources more efficiently than the low income earner who had EXACTLY the same chance to use those societal resources.
