Your post makes it sound like this country stopped getting as involved around the world once conscription was done away with, though that is debatable to say the least. The only difference is now instead of everyone's son or daughter potentially having to go get shot at for no good reason, the vast majority can put a yellow ribbon on the bumper and promptly forget there is a war on.

a draft is wrong for many reasons. the class warfare sentiment you express is common among the far left-but its stupid

a) its inefficient-brilliant or educated people are not needed for grunt work

b) its contrary to a free society

c) if there is a draft-cannon fodder should be based on employability -oh you will claim that is unfair. well once you start drafting people for the "good of society" fairness is no longer applicable anyway, you might as well not waste the smart people

Not everyone drafted is Infantry only a small portion of the Military is Infantry.

I'm surprised. I had to sign up in order to join the military as funny as that sounds. I thought everybody did this when they turned 18 or at least until they tried to attend a public college. Colleges don't admit males who haven't registered for the draft.

I'm not sure what joko104 meant with his comment. I thought only a few hippies refused to register for the draft for principled reasons. Most people just do it because well...... It's the law.

Things are kind of shifting in that direction. If a job can be done by a civilian it pretty much is. A lot of MOS's (military occupational specialities) have been eliminated or drastically reduced in number.

If you or your parents don't sign up you up for selective service they will just sign you up anyway.
 
We shouldn't have even the possibility of a draft but as long as we do it should be everybody. Especially Congress and their children.

I dont think anyone should have to sign up for selective services, period.
 
Women should be allowed to join the military but not given combat assignments. Putting men in combat is bad enough, let alone women. To force women into military combat or face prison is uncalled for. My mother taught me it was the responsibility men to protect women.

No. They should not be drafted. If you are going to randomly select people to have to go fight a war, it makes a lot more sense to randomly select men since you have a much higher chance of getting a person who will make a decent soldier. There's no reason a woman can't make a decent soldier as we've seen, but it takes a certain type of woman which is rarer than the type of man that can make a decent soldier.
 
I have not read this entire thread, and I'm sure I'll be called sexist or old fashioned but I say no. Guess I'm old fashioned. I didn't want to go to college after high school. I wanted to get married and have kids. There's no way I could leave my kids!

No, that's just the US government management system. The same government that's screwed up medicare, social security benefits, pretty much everything they are involved with. The same government many here trust with managing your health care.
 
Equal rights means equal rights. That should include Selective Service and Divorce Courts. It's an all on none deal in my opinion.

Not in today's society. If women want to be equal then they should be treated equal by the head of the US government that stresses marriage equality, LGBT equality, income equality, and gender equality. Equality comes with responsibilities as well as entitlements.

The military does many things other than "grunt work" and the line of "brilliant" people who'd like to apply, and who's college debt/anything more than a speeding ticket history disqualifies them, is long enough already.

The best argument against the draft is that the majority of the population is either too stupid, too immature, or too selfish to handle military life, and we shouldn't waste our time getting our obese and undisciplined population into fighting shape when, in today's economy, the amount of people trying to get in meets all demands.
